This line. Except I don't think over-committing in the forward-line is as much of an issue if everyone is on board and the next line is in position. Jack Riewoldt is a pretty decent case-in-point. He's a tall, but he's goal-hungry and doesn't give up the hassle, aiding their smaller fleet in return. Our forward talls don't expect their efforts to make a difference - and at times I think it even demotivates Garlett.

that no amount of game plan tweaking, trading/drafting, physical preparation, etc, will make any real difference until we can overcome our well honed ability to f*** up everything when it counts

We are not far away. 

I mentioned in the JW thread that i had a chance encounter with a well known Port coaching staff member on holidays yesterday.

The 2 teams Port feared the most were Adelaide and The Dees. He was as surprised at our end of season failings as we all our. When i said i put this down to our coaches and leadership he agreed.

We need more leaders. We have some in the making but they are not ready yet. 

Lever was touted as future Capt material at a team that played in a GF this year.....that is why we are prepared to pay overs for him in my opinion

One may lead a horse to water, but one cannot make it drink  

Or maybe partying in Bali, celebrating the “achievements” of the year is of a higher priority for some?

What did we learn?

1. Team football beats EVERYTHING. 

2. Systematic honesty. Look how Hardwick made such huge changes to his coaching and communication style. He is part of a system that embraces honesty and people feel safe being honest. Even Dustin Martin is able to open up within the confines of the club. Amazing effort.

3. Minimise injuries. This continues to be a huge issue for us and we MUST sort it out asap.

4. A central, mature, respected person to be the middle man between playing list, footy department, and the Board/CEO. Brian Cook at Geelong, Neil Balme at the Tiges. The central 2 people in the Tiges premiership win are Hardwick and Balme.

Relax, lads. It took Hardwick how many years become a 'mature' coach? 

Many posters are fixed on 'thinking too precisely o'er the event'.

The bottom line is the Demons missed the finals by .5 of a percent. Had they made it - given their track record against teams like Port and Adelaide this year -  they could have done anything.

Have faith.

Word I have heard is that the end of season drop off wasn't that unexpected by the FD.  Same as the previous year.  Until we get enough miles in the legs of our younger players they will tire in the second half of the season.  Not sure when the tipping point will be, but I have a feeling it isn't that far away before we have seasoned campaigners who can push through the second half of the fixture. Then it will simply be getting a good run in terms of injuries from the footy Gods.

Good luck to them 2017 was theirs lets see how they go if they cop some injuries.

Hardwick and Beveridge both play Clarko Footy, which is based on every player doing a job. That's 5 flags in a row to the Clarko School.

Goodwin, although not a Clarko School graduate, obviously has the same philosophy.

If we'd stayed fit and had a full list all year we would have given the flag a shake given 2017 was most definitely a weakish year with a flag waiting to be pinched. Pity it was the Tigers who had everything go right.

Everyone seems to be focussing on what the Tigers did in 2017, but they only did what several teams did previously.

I still reckon we are better than Richmond.
