Dees with highest amount of players polled (15) but 17th for individual player votes with Oliver on 12

Makes a change from all the votes going to Jones.

Pretty accurate reflection of where we are at. Few standouts and the players with the ability to give the Brownlow a shake (Oliver, Petracca) are still in the making.

Viney had an injury interrupted year and would've otherwise been a strong candidate to poll the highest.

Pedo was a bit unlucky to poll in only two games (I was going to say "Pedo was a bit stiff" but thought against it. Although I've done it now).

"Still in the making" is both exciting and impatiently depressing. That players tend to reach their peak at around 25-28 with few outliers, suggests that while hard work collectively will see drastic inprovement, we realistically may have to wait a few years before we're challenging in prelims and GF's with high end stars like Rance, Cotchin & Martin etc. Although if we can perfect a system next year, Oliver & Petracca could be the extremely effective disposers like Bontompelli that can lead us to an exciting momentum gathering early assault. Lets hope we're up for raising our game next year lest we fall behind others.

For some reason even when we won games easily an opposition player would take votes off our players

Let's remember this is based on the umpires opinion.

I'd rather the opinions of experts on wh was BOG than umpires (who are potentially compromised in their bias for or against a player).

A less than desireable example, but nonetheless, Daniher was awarded the ANZAC day medal, yet received only 1 brownlow vote for that game.

It is now such a midfielders' medal. Everyone raves about how good Jake Lever is and he received 1 vote.  In the old days we had ruckmen, defenders, wingers, forwards all winning the medal. It's a shame.

That's because umpires have lost the ability to judge who has the most impact on a game and only see who has the most possessions.

Agreed.  They should consider taking the voting off the umpires and or give the goal umpires a vote.  It's a little hard to understand how it has become so midfielder dominated when there are so many umpires off the ball.

With the exception of Oliver, Hibberd and Jetta the rest of demon polling isn't too far off the mark, imo.  They consistently stood up and should have polled more.  Other AFL gongs recognised the three as being in the very best in the AFL.

However, our 5 leaders polled in a total of only 13 games (15%) of the 88 games they collectively played.  (Oliver alone polled in 7).  Maybe there were a few more games where the leaders should have polled but overall it is an indictment of our leadership team.  This says the leaders didn't impact enough in the games they played.

Note: A miscarriage of justice that Jetta, in the AA squad, did not poll a single vote!

Unbelievable ‼️

the spread of votes was due to injuries.  otherwise Viney and Jones would have been double figures

also if the umps had eyes Clarry would have polled >20

Expected IMO. They were never going to take votes away from the midfielders and hand them to a small defender. It goes against everything the Brownlow now is.

Defenders generally get few votes as the work they do isn't eye-catching (like scoring goals) and while often valuable it's not creative (eg, spoils). Tom Lonergan has just retired after more than 200 games without a vote to his name. I'm not concerned that Jetta didn't get a vote under this system. I'd be much more concerned if the club's match committee didn't rate him in the voting for the Best and Fairest.

Oliver will struggle to increase his vote tally if he continues to complain to the umpires. His constant whinging must be really annoying.

Overall,  I think the Brownlow voting was consistent with our year.

They were spot on, he is not a standout player and would rarely be in the top 3 players on the ground.

He is consistent but not a standout player who dominates games.

Melbourne Players were never going to be in this when it was deigned for us to be put in our place, probably the Carlton Game if not before. Did notice last night though how little recognition was given to the maggots, and what a stirring job they had done this season.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
