I'll trot our where I think the club is at and what we need to do to improve to ensure we continue to climb the ladder and eliminate these types of games and seasons.  You'll spend the summer wallowing in misery without offering up anything resembling a coherent thought about our way forward.  It will just be your usual chest thumping, hollow rhetoric that it always is.  You don't look forward, you always look back.

As soon as I got the club email about finals, I got a knot in my stomach. And of course it came back to bite us...

I have never been as filthy as I am this weekend.

I think there is still a problem of attitude.

Years of losing I believe have resulted in low expectations.

A win is a win jones was quoted after the sons game.

That sums it up. That win was a poor win against a bottom side. If we thumped them we would be playing finals.I cant believe as captain he said that but i think time at the club has done this.

Until we set our sights on a flag and align all our thoughts and actions behind that one objective we wont get one.

This complacency of near enough is good enough must go.

I was there in the final round of 1987. Same situation: playing for a spot in the finals, down at half time, we lost a promising young forward early in each game. The difference in '87 was desire. The Dees played as though they wanted to win. Saturday's loss was the kind of result I have come to expect. There is a flakiness at the club that makes it unlikely we will win when it matters and we are good at wasting opportunities. Including Saturday we also dropped winnable games to North, Hawks, Freeo. All teams well below us on the ladder. Add 5 wins to our tally and obviously this year turns out very differently. We should have beaten Geelong at Etihad too, but for appalling kicking.

Following Melbourne = long periods of disappointment punctuated by occasional false dawns.

The whole last 53  years have not all been bad, between 1965  to 1986 the club was bad,  between 1987 to  1991 the team sprit was high class we all ways won the do or die games,  we where a very good side,  unfortunately we're up against some great clubs in Hawthorn and Carlton, between 1998 to 2006 the team was a good team just not great, so just refer to the last 11 years of the current club you can't lump the whole 53 year together. We can only hope this burns the team into action, there have been so many bumps in the road this season,  unfortunately there's no next week, and we cannot make amends for it's all over. If we don't make finals next year then I don't know everything might fall apart. I notice you are never positive even when we're winning, I don't know how you can live your whole life like that smile every once in a while, chin up the sun will rise  tomorrow.

Yes i can. Close enough is not good enough.

At the MFC close enough has been good enough for decades. 

Danniher had one legitimate shot 1998, then the year after we failed to make finals. 

2000 was a good side that got beaten up when it counted.  2001 we didn't make Finals

i could go on

THE Club has accepted close enough for too long. 

Goodwin better get tough next year otherwise he won't be coach for too long after. This capitulation of 2017 is very bad. Teams will smash us next year. They know we collapse

The good thing about us missing out and not being gifted a finals appearance by Adelaide is the players will realise every moment matters. Every single tackle made or missed, every goal in the home and away season has counted at this time of year and affected the result.

Had we coasted in today Bradbury style I fear they would think finals comes somewhat easy and it will just happen naturally next year. It won't.

They must take responsibility for their own destiny and nobody else.

i do just fine. I just know The MASSIVE potential of a strong Melbourne in this City would be and it frustrates the hell out of me.

But even in 1987 ultimately we lost that Prelim by ourselves

it was heartbreaking to watch that last 30 mins. 3 shots at goal should have been kicked...

I hope you are right. Because i have heard the "hurting" line trotted out so many times over the years, and it lasts for a week or so. 

I really thought at Halftime QB this year we had turned the corner, but it didn't happen. 

Why is this club so bad at starting games?

and why are mistakes repeated so regularly?

i don't have a clue what Goodwin is doing defensively, i hope knows...

But will they ? I am begining to doubt it to be totally honest

The worry is that so many of us are questioning whether it will actually hurt for them. Who can blame us though when your faith is constantly tested.

Could you imagine if we were in west coast's shoes today? Playing a depleted adelaide at the mcg, where a loss means nothing for them, but a win would mean finals for us.

We wouldn't get within 40 points of them.

Yep afraid so. There's just something about taking an opportunity on a silver platter that this club can't fathom. 

Can you imagine if you were being held ransom and your life was in the hands of a Melbourne team playing the bottom side? Win and your life is spared. I'd be sweating some serious bullets

Yep, I've lost faith completely after this weekend. They'll need to earn it back in 2018, big time. As one of the blokes said earlier, every other team from the wooden spooners up know that we're a soft touch. I expect we're going to struggle to progress, especially if Gawn continues his downward spiral. Let's hope he's not another one season wonder.

No, something has gone very wrong in the last third of the season. We've lost games we shouldn't have lost and just scraped through in some others. Injuries, fitness, skills and attitude have been the problems.
