Honestly something is going wrong in the recruiting/development area, all our depth players are not up to scratch. Trengove, jkh, white, weidman, Kennedy, Wagner, max King wouldn't get a game at any other afl  club this year. I know we have been crippled by injuries but we lack depth and better recruiting of mature aged depth players is needed, especially with all the six day breaks.

Name one club, other than GWS, that could cover the injuries we've had to this point?

I'll answer for you - none.  It has nothing to do with depth issues, it has everything to do with losing a host of key players, not to mention others like Brayshaw and AVB who could easily slot into the side as well.

VDB is not even a best 22 player when fully fit

A team can carry one or two, maybe three NQRs if their core is intact.

Are you really suggesting that any recruiting guru can plan for what we have had happen over the past few months.

I will be very interested to hear from anyone who can get to the Casey v Port game this week how in particular Weideman, JKH, and Kennedy go.

I certainly hope that Jesse and Jack W are ready to go next week - Jesse in particular needs to reacquaint himself with Rowe, and show him a clean pair go heels.

Not depth issues.

INJURY issues.

You can't replace your best players and as of the second half we were down Watts, Garlett, Hogan, Jones, Salem and Viney. Good depth is a misnomer.

You. Cannot. Replace. Your. Best. Players.

This has nothing to do with recruiting!

We just can't cover for the loss of both captains, our two best key forwards, our All Australian ruckman (followed immediately by our backup ruckman!), our 2017 leading goalkicker and our silkiest defender.

No club in the league could cover an injury crisis like this, barring GWS.

That wasn't my point at all.  I used Brayshaw and AVB as examples of players who can slot into the side when we have injuries and play to a standard higher than the others.  I never said he was best 22 so don't go and put words in my mouth.

avb would have made zero difference tonight, he is similar standard to bugg melksham and anb

what we need is some fast  ready made mature aged players ala Mitch Hannan. Matt Hanson is a good candidate that springs to mind

Jones, Watts, Hogan, Garlett, Salem and Viney are all top 10 players.

No team carries depth which replaces that.

All I'm saying is we shouldn't be relying on duds like Wagner and white to try fill those holes, these guys are hopeless at afl level , better recruiting would help

Have you forgotten about where our list was only 3 seasons ago? The improvement couldn't be more dramatic.

There's seriously only so many players you can turn over every year, and we've been turning over plenty!

As others have said, missing 5 of our best 10 players including our 3 best forwards, can't cover that.

Improvement is good but there are always areas to improve more on, recruiting ready made mature age players is one for this years off season, just hope that hard calls are made with list management and we cut our losses

Maybe we'd ordinarily call on vandenBerg or Brayshaw, but they're also injured.

Our injury list is huge and cuts significantly deep. This isn't a depth issue.

So we can end up like Richmond or Collingwood, with a bunch of mature-age plodders clogging up the list and taking games away from teenagers with greater potential?

Would you consider white and Wagner teenagers with great potential?

id rather let the kids play out in the vfl and ply their trade while the mature ages fill those gaps until the kids are ready

Exactly. We're now bringing in the depth players of our depth players.

Only a few months ago Gawn went down and our backup ruckman followed him a week later. How is that the recruitment team's fault?

All good teams have a third ruckman they can call upon. Our third ruckman is Mitch King.. Still 4-5 years away and hasn't stood out in vfl in any games yet

Let me say this.

We are not missing 6 of our best 22, we are missing 6 of our best 12! No team in the comp can cover 6 of their best 12, none!!

I never expected us to win tonight but ideally our depth players would compete and make a contest rather than turning the ball over with every disposal and not manning up

Given the amount of evidence to the contrary this is a truly bizarre statement.

They're defenders under pressure with having played few games, ask why they were getting bombarded , we were getting flogged out of the middle.

Very Harsh......

Weiderman - 2nd year KPP tall which take time to develop!

Our injury list

Angus Brayshaw (concussion) – indefinite

Lochie Filipovic (hip) – 4 weeks

Colin Garland (knee) – season

Jeff Garlett (hamstring) – test

Jesse Hogan (testicular cancer) – test

Nathan Jones (quadriceps) – 4-5 weeks

Pat McKenna (hamstring) – 4-5 weeks

Christian Salem (hamstring) – 3-4 weeks

Joel Smith (shoulder) – available

Tim Smith (navicular bone) – season

Aaron vandenBerg (heel) – season

Jack Viney (shoulder) – available

Jack Watts (hamstring) – test

Most clubs would struggle to cope with that many key players out & still won 4 in a row & play 4 games in 18 days!

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

Lever was also on restricted duties and appeared to be in runners.  The main group was doing end-to-end transition work in a simulated match situation. Ball mov

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
