The Bulldogs have:

- Chris Grant - head of footy
- Rohan Smith  + Gia - assistant coaches
- Brad Johnson and Luke Darcy - prominent media members
- even Mark Stevens - journalist/bulldogs cheerleader

There's a club feel about them with history passed down through the generations of players including guys who were there when they lost prelims and escaped merger. 

Garry Lyon is a prominent Melbourne person and even if his return to the club in an administrative position was a failure he's still someone we are better off with involved in the media and promoting our club. He's clearly still passionate about the club.

Instead of Wayne Carey mentoring Hogan it would be nice if it was Garry. 

I think we should welcome him back with open arms. Garry, Russell Robertson, the Ox, Neita, Brad Green, they all should be welcome around the club and getting guys like that back involved should help us.

I agree having past campions around can be great for culture due to the history they bring but you need to make sure they are destabilising. 

Garry comes across to me as one who meddles in things behind the scenes, plays politics if you like. I could be really wrong but just the impressions I have, I am happy for him to be around but not too involved. 

Russell is already there as he is employed by the club and seems to have a great relationship with the current group. Not sure how much he bring history or culture wise.

Ox could be good, I would bring him in as a part time specialist coach to work with the young forwards and even the bigger mids like Tracca.

Neita would be great but I think is a part time coach at the hawks for forwards or goal kicking or something. If he is then no but if he isn't then massive yes.

Green is the defensive coach at North, unless he has been let go. Same as Neita, if so no, if he isn't then massive yes. 

The ones I would love to see to bring that history and good cultural stuff are Junior (we screwed him over but he is there on B&F night), Yze (although is coaching), Bruce (same as Yze), White, Healy (of the Greg variety), Lovett, Lovell, O'Dwyer, Stinga, and the Febeys. Even bring back Grinter to be a part time coach on having a real crack 100% of the time. 

My memory doesn't go back tot he early 80's or before but surely there are some from this time that would suit too. 

RDB is always a given, it is up to the youngens to realise what he can offer and what he means to this club and take on board what ever is offered.

I wasn't meaning jobs either, although it may have sounded that way. I was talking about players we should be welcoming back into the club to be around and talk to the current group about being a Dee. 

I have my reservations about Garry as I mentioned. Hopefully with the new found stability he wouldn't be in a position where he felt he needed to intervene. 

If posters can't deal with this subject with some maturity and good sense, we'll have to close down the discussion altogether.

Which Melbourne players have been inducted into the Hall of Fame since 2000? I suspect very few. 

And Garry Lyon should be one of them.

Depression can change a person. That's an old cliche but it's the reality. Drugs, alcohol amplify the problem and sometimes fuel it or wake it up. I had a mate that I travelled with who randomly had a nervous break down while on holiday in Europe. We were in the hotel room and he just lost it. Never took drugs but was on the drink a lot and something twitched. I say that he left a bit of his old self in that room that night. He was never the same.

In Lyon's case it's clear that his mental state either drove him to make bad choices, or came out from hiding as a product of bad decisions.

One thing's for certain is that once that happens you, you can manage it that little bit better and know what and when to avoid to triggers. You can't all the time but you're in a position of control and believe it or not, but sometimes you need to hit rock bottom before you can rise. 

You could argue that a guy like Lyon, he is a smart guy and everything he did, maybe it was beneath him. Maybe he has an opportunity now to do something good.

Maybe that means coming back to the club. His mistakes in the past, perhaps his decision making was clouded because he thought he could do no wrong. If you think you're invincible, you get complacent.

Maybe it's a little selfish, but perhaps his downfall is the best thing for him and the MFC. Maybe he can come back now and really do some good.

But I believe it's too late. Maybe.

The media & stardom can alter a persons perception, & they can lose sense of who & where they are.

Similarly,  this club needs a base away from 'the Starlight of the 'G'.  It also alters peoples perceptions.

 

Both need a place to get they're feet firmly entrenched in the sand & get grounded again.

Although Robbo is already heavily involved with the Dee's, bit hard for Neita and Greeny as they are coaching other sides!!
