We have a perfectly good CHF.  The problem is that we're playing him at FF and ruining his games by making him sit in the square and lobbing high balls onto his head.  What we need to do is let Hogan play at CHF where he belongs and put the resting/spare ruck in at FF, whether that's Pedersen, Frost, Watts or King I know not.  Hogan's strength is his mobility, not his power marking.  We need to give him the freedom to run his man into the ground.  Weideman is a long-term prospect, not a quick fix for this season.

Agree, the sooner he plays there the better.

Clearly, we have no true CHF who can take a screamer and kick a goal. Pederson not up to it, Dawes? well will he come back after numerous Calf troubles? Frost aint it either!

I think even at this stage lets roll the dice and Blood Weideman for 6 games or so and see what he's got tro offer! He can take a grab, can kick accurately and loves a physical contest.

Looking at some of the GWS beanpole forwards is it that much of a risk to play him next week? Same can be said for Petracca! Honeymoon period over lets see what youv'e got son!?

Whilst on it it appears that Trengove is way ahead of schedule and although I doubted his ability to get back, I'm happy to admit an error and play him on the basis that he is a far better player than Bugg, Harmes and Matt Jones.

Thoughts!??

Don't you think that maybe Hogan is a better kick on the run,  than a set shot?  just wondering if he would be better high than deep at this time while he has the yips.

maybe Weide will be a FF?

To all those who have asked "What Drug I am taking"??

Its called "taking your chances" Drug! Its a great Drug coz the potential for a Buzz is irresistable!!

So we have a very good player, albet a young player who has shown some excellent signs

1 He leads well

2 He kicks well

3 He likes the physicality of the contest

4 He is big

Ok, so move Hogan up the ground, Move Watts to FF and put Weeds beside him. With Garlett at feet. Instruct the HF Line to play more towards the centre to create space!

Let's be a bit more adventurous!

As we have seen many teams can bring in first year players from round 1 and they make an impact!

Why not this kid????

Its to soon for Weide,  we do not want to do to him what we did to watts his name..   I've forgotten his name already,  just one week after that fella starred for us?   wat is his name again?

they say,,,,  a weeks a looong time,  in football.

Watts is mentally weak and every player in the competition knows it , but agree I would maybe give him 2 AFL games at the end of the season .

Because he's still on restricted minutes in Casey practice matches FFS

I agree back 1/3 of this season some time If he is up to it,  just for a teaser.   Maybe one or two games?

maybe same,  for another back flanker around that same time?-

He'd have to be in the frame, but would be suprised if it were this early.

The whole Casey v Melbourne Reserves argument has been done 1000 times with the same two KEY  questions unable to be adequately answered.

1. Where will we find the money to field a reserves team?

2. Where would they play their matches? Noting that playing out of Punt Rd will result in us writting Richmond FC a cheque every time.

In Answer to your questions Why can a club like Western Bulldogs be able to afford a stand alone team and us not??

If this club really wants tro get anywhere it will "Find" this money and make it happen! Profesional football clubs are biting the bullet and reaping the benefits ( Bulldogs again)  Others might know how much extra money iot takes and the answer if verified might surprise you Angry at Casey!

Re Ground ,well ,do you really think we have a solid supporter base of supporters at Cranbourne and environs??

If Punt Rd is out of the question and I don't see how it would be Why not consider Princess Park or even Victoria Park if available , better surfaces, better atmiosphere and surely much better venues than Bloody cold, and windy Casey Fields??

Can't see the difference between the Scorpions & a reserves team really.

We are funding them. The coaches are all MFC employed. The senior coach is part of the MFC coaching panel.

Footscray reserves still have to have a group of VFL players who are not on the Bulldogs list.

What's the difference?

He has missed a lot of footy in the last two years. The club will want to get continuity in his training, and hopefully get a full year of playing under his belt. He desperately needs that with a young body. Hopefully his confidence will grow to run out games properly.

He should be nurtured through as we have Dawes, Pederson, Frost, Hullett, Max king as options before him at the moment.

In answer what are the coaches instructions ?? do they come from Melbourne FC or Casey Scorpions FC?

The piont I make is who has the final call re players,  positions played, coaching philosophy etc!

If MFC don't get absolute rights to all on field decisions then that is the difference and it is a bloody big difference!

If the weed gets match fit over the next month and then bangs down the door with marking/pressure/goals over 4-5 weeks then I would bring him in for sure.

talking about it now is just nuts

I hope he spends another 10-12 weeks or so at Casey.  I'd be happy if he spent the whole year there.

He's a fair way off being able to compete against bigger bodies.  There's just no need to rush things.  Sometimes playing AFL fast tracks your development and sometimes it hinders it.  I see no upside to Weideman playing too soon.

If I recall there were a few statements about that from Mahoney and/or Roos.

That was the objective in Plapp being an MFC appointment.

To allow the MFC game plan to be implemented at that level.

It came about as a direct result of the Scorpions financial dilemma and dependence on MFC funding, if I'm not mistaken.

One thing the Dogs have that we don't is a ground suitable for VFL use.

Victoria Park is a possability depending on how much city of Yarra would charge for use. But i see no benefit in us writting fortnightly cheques to Richmond (Punt Rd) or Carlton (Princess Park).

But i don't want this thread to be hijacked. If Weideman plays a good game this weekend and we struggle up forward, then I think he could push for a Round 4 debut.

I agree.

But I think the Hogan to CHF move has merit.

Get him out of the goal square congestion we seem to be creating and hopefully in more one out contests.

Ok I would go with

Weeds in! in a FP

Hogan starts at FF

If Mc Donald isn't dropped I have him at CHF

Dunn goes to FB

Garland if he holds his place moves to CHB

Thats all for now!

Paddy Mccartin at saints does all those things, has put together some real form at VFL level and still isn't quite yet there for AFL level. Putting Weid in and expecting him to do much of anything would be wishful thinking. I don't think it is taking a risk or being adventurous as much as desperation if we put him in the team already. Let him string a good month together before he gets a gig.

Hell No!  That's the biggest problem Hogan has right now.  Stop putting him in the goalsquare and let him play his bets position.  He needs to be able to roam and hit the contests on his own terms.

We are going up against one of the taller forward lines the competition and you want to take McDonald out of the back line. Maybe have to add Frost. Don't think Garland can take a tall forward either.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
