I would have liked to see Neil Daniher get the vote.

Perhaps Michelle Payne if he missed.

David Morrison what a joke.

Unfortunately the award is now about as meaningful as Jobe's Brownlow.

I know next to nothing about Morrison, but then I knew next to nothing about Rosie Batty before she won it either.

Give him a go and see what he does with his platform. I was surprised at how much traction Batty got regarding domestic violence. Maybe Morrison can get similarly high levels of attention on society inequality, which seems to be his thing judging by his speech. I thought this was interesting given that he was head of the armed forced, traditionally not a bastion of equal opportunity.

Too early to say, but we have to give him a go.

Australian of the Year now seems little more than a platform to push political agendas and appease "progressives".

Exactly my point. Why don't we give it to someone who has achieved already and has the respect of the Australian people.

Australian of the year has become about giving a "platform" to a vote of an out of touch panel.

I actually thought that was what it was about. Giving someone a prominent member of society a greater platform to illicit societal change. To me that has more meaning and benefit than an award saying "well done mate, now hang up your boots and have a beer".

As for an out of touch panel, I have no idea who sits on it so I can't comment.

I'm more than happy for the Australian of the Year to be a rotating platform for social warriors.

We have a never ending platform for social warriors. You see it everywhere and anywhere that the public has to pay for their opinion. Not least on our tax payer funded ABC.

Australia day should be about achieving for Australia and a yarn amongst mates. 

I hoped Australian of the year would go to a bloke who has motor neuron disease and against all odds went on a high rating tv show knowing full well his body could fail him live on air. This bloke went on to gather an army, walk to the g and raise much needed money for a very underfunded cause. He raised awareness for motor neuron disease like never before and it is now getting the attention it deserves in Australia and we will be at the forefront of finding a cure.

 Or it could be the first woman jockey every to ride a Melbourne cup winner. Up against more international horses & money than ever as well as the preferred male jockeys. Michelle Payne who had her intellectually disabled brother by her side to share in the glory as the strapper.

They are great Australians.

Meh, we're pretty different people Wrecker. I see your point. I don't agree with it, but I get it.

I find the differences in perception really interesting though. For you, a lot of social warriors are wrong in their cause, so you feel their voice is amplified when you hear it railing against a society you're (mostly) comfortable with. For me, many social warriors have just causes, so I feel like they aren't heard even when they do have a platform. It might be a generational thing, or maybe because of our differing political views, but I find it interesting nonetheless. I suspect the truth lies somewhere in the middle, but despite that, I'll still feel like some voices are marginalised and you'll feel like they are given too much free reign.

As I said at the start. He is no Neil Daniher.

Perhaps they should change the criteria so we get more worthy winners and not just activists hacks.

Well we have given him a go and he is worse than i could have imagined.

It's funny in a week where Daniher has been bravely raising money for Motor Neuron disease research, Morrison has been condeming the use of the word "guys" when addressing a group of people.

Says it all really.

lol did he? I haven't heard boo from him since his first speech.

Quite disappointing. Maybe we'll get a more worthy winner next year. Agreed Daniher is doing great things.

Thanks for the bump, in all honesty I had completely forgotten about this. That's probably an indictment of both me AND Morrison.
