It's worth taking note of this player who KM ranks at 26 which is currently our first selection in the draft -

"26. Jy Simpkin (VIC)
Position: General forward
Height, weight: 182cm, 72kg
Recruited from: Murray Bushrangers
Plays like: Jimmy Toumpas"

Brother of Joffy, who played for Geelong, Hawthorn and now Essendon.

Watch out for Josh Begley (Eastern Ranges). May be drafted around 45-rookie range. Very strong mid/fwd with Jake Stringer qualities. He has really improved in 2016 and has some wraps. Interesting to see how he goes at draft camp.

I think we will delist 5 players, upgrade Wagner, trade for Hibberd and grab either Zac Clarke, Michael Barlow or  as free agents/delisted free agents.

Leaves us 2 picks (3rd and 4th round) around 45 and 63.

3rd round options likely:  Brodie Romensky, Hamish Brayshaw, Oscar Junker, Willem Drew, Louis Cunningham, Jeremy Goddard.

4th round smokies or punts (past 50, the draft success rate for a 100+ game player is about less than 10%).

Patrick Naish, Sam McLarty, Brett Blair, Lachlan Walker, Lachlan Tiziani.

I think the Dees will get 3 picks in the draft after trade/DFA opportunities.

Likely picks are 46, 64, 82.

3rd round

Brandon Parfitt ...NT  pacy smart indigenous mid

Darcy Cameron... WA 20yo big agile gialkicking CHF/ruck

Brody Romensky... Jets. tall agile ballwinning ruck-rover/HB

Oscar Junker... Jets. gun 3rd tall 192cm smart special forward

Hamish Brayshaw...Dragons. brother of Angus. Leader, smart half fwd/mid.

Willem Drew...Rebels. running mid/wing. Ballwinner inside & outside

Louis Cunningham... Chargers. highly talented HBF with Dal Santo like accurate left foot disposal

Jeremy Goddard...WA. big 202cm ruck who can rotate as a forward

4th round

Josh Begley... Ranges. big bodied 187cm 93 kg foward/mid (Petracca like quality). Kicks goals and has AFL ready frame

Sam McLarty... Chargers. key back. Courageous abd never beaten.

Lachlan Walker... 19yo Chargers... running mid/HBF. Physical type.

Lachlan Tiziani...19yo Bushrangers  Smart 3rd forward who kicks goals. Luke Breust like ability around goals

5th round or rookie smokies

Dan Allsopp ... Stingrays. Smart very fast small forward. Runner up in Morrish medal.

Bailey Morrish ... Stingrays. Has the pace and skills to succeed at afl level. Perhaps Johanissen like.

Jack Henry...Falcons. smart 188cm mid tall who gets around the ground to many contests. absolute punt

Patrick Lipinski... Knights. smart 188cm medium forward. Special skills

For what it's worth - There are four players that I looked at around the range of our second pick (according to some bloody list I saw), that I feel may be a fit. What I saw via you tube (yes, I know) can be fools gold. Still..... Very different players but I was looking for 'footy smarts'.

1. Myles Poholke - strong bodied, utility type who impresses but not sure he'll still be there.

2. Quinton Narkle - an indigenous smaller, hard running link player. I wondered whether he was quick to boot.

3. Noah Hura - touch of the Dean Laidey's about him re running from defence. I suspect he needs to not always take the game on but 'fire in the belly' type player

4. Taylin Duman - rangy half back, possible swingman. Strikes me as a risk/reward type player and once I got Cale Morton out of my head, I was able to look through impartial eyes. Disposal iffy? Not sure.

A couple of pieces on the ESPN site from Knightmare ~

Knightmare's AFL Draft Power Rankings: October

Knightmare's AFL Draft Combine analysis

With the Demons' highest draft selection at the present time standing at #29, Knightmare's power rankings puts us in contention for North Ballarat Rebels utility Jarrod Berry who he likens to a former Demon captain:

29. Jarrod Berry (VIC)
Best position: Utility
Height, weight: 191cm, 80kg
Recruited from: North Ballarat Rebels
Plays like: Jack Grimes
Projected draft range: first to second round
Rated last month: 21
Rationale behind ranking/change of ranking: Has had an injury-interrupted season but has shown promise in multiple positions.
Strengths:
- Leadership
- Run and carry
- Burst of pace
- Shrugs tackles
- Contested-ball winning
- Puts body on the line
- Versatility to play multiple positions with the scope to play midfield, forward or back well
- Scoreboard impact when used forward of centre
- Reading of the flight
- Intercept marking
- Aerial marking
- Vision
- Hurt factor by foot when given time to lower eyes and find a target up the field
Weaknesses:
- Inconsistent footskills
- Rushes decision making under pressure
- Unclear best position (arguably looking best off half-forward late season)

Seems to me that we have what is a fairly even draft which might work out in favour of clubs like us that have spent/will spend their early draft picks during trading time.

Even more so given the stranglehold which the academy clubs appear to be getting on the top ten draft picks through the current round of trading. The end result of this will be that those clubs will be able to pick the eyes out of the best players in the draft from outside the academies knowing the possibility of clubs nominating academy players with early picks has been all but eliminated. They can then turn around and select their own academy players with the lower selections accumulated.

So yes - if our first pick is in the mid 20s or 30s, we might not be all that badly off this year.

Interesting read here about the best mature-age/state league prospects:

Knightmare's AFL draft wrap: The best state league prospects

I particularly like the sound of these guys:

In the WAFL, making a significant impression and also looming as a likely national draft selection has been Subiaco's Liam Ryan. He is a 186cm, 76kg, high flying 20-year-old forward. Ryan has kicked an impressive 40 goals from his 16 WAFL League games while taking several highlight reel-worthy marks throughout the season.

Another young ruckman who is also in the mix to be selected is 21-year-old, 204cm, 104kg Claremont ruckman Darcy Cameron. Cameron has taken another step in the right direction this year and has not only proven effective as a tap ruckman but also as a forward with 36 goals and 106 marks from his 19 WAFL League games. He has had another impressive season and may, as a relieving ruckman or No. 1 ruckman, be a developable player.

I keep hearing whispers about us being into Liam Ryan but as it's that time of year it's all needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

SANFL Player to look for is Josh Scott. 21yo. Former Lakes Entrance boy and Gippsland Power. 3 years at Glenelg. Won their 2016 B&F. Goalkicker, can take a good mark. Moved into midfield and backline when needed in 2016. Like Jack Watts. 190cm 82 kg. Needs an AFL preseason but worth grabbing at 50+ or as a rookie.

WAFL Players

Liam Ryan: has had a very good season and possesses a wonderful skill set, lightening quick around goal and very dangerous at the fall of the ball as a crumber.  Having said all that his lack of accountability and inability to deal with close checking defenders really stood out when playing against quality opponents.  Was shown up big time in the GF against the Thunder (Dockers aligned club) when at times he was matched up by Hughes, Clancee Pearce and Silvagni.  A lot of Shane Yarran about him and he will always do well at WAFL level but not sure about how he will go at the next level.  A rookie possibility

Darcy Cameron: Has had a very good season and has really made the transition as a player from a Ruckman who could rest forward, to now being a forward who can ruck.  Was very 1 dimensional in his draft year and it hurt him.  He has knuckled down and is exactly what we need going forward.  Issue we have is I highly doubt he will be there when our first pick comes.  Meth Coast are all over him and will take him with at least their 3rd round pick

Zac Fisher: Really a kid I hope falls down the pecking order, he is an outstanding prospect who uses the ball very well and is a lively midfielder.  Very much a small midfielder and to me that gives me hope he may drop down the pecking order.  There are lots of question marks on his size which is the only issue I see with him however in the big bodied midfield we have built I think he would be an asset.

Darcy Cameron will go around 35-40.  Will not get past Freo at 40.

Agree I had Zac Fisher around 40-50 but may slip due to size.

If Freo take English at 7 I wouldn't thin they take Cameron, they will look at taking who is left out of Logue, Powell-Pepper or Rotham with their second pick

Have heard that next years draft is significantly better for KPP and in particular rucks, I'm not a big follower of the draft but is that true from those who do watch?

In the case would we be looking at just getting a mature state-based ruck as insurance then looking at a draft prospect in 2017?

Is there going to be anyone decent left at pick 57 when we enter the draft? Only late pick I've heard touted was Darcy Cameron but I doubt he will last that long.
