Can you copy and paste for those of us who cant get past the paywall?

Cheers

To avoid the Herald Sun paywall just paste the article title into Google and you can get in through there

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/teams/melbourne/clayton-oliver-has-all-the-hallmarks-of-a-future-champion-just-five-games-into-his-career/news-story/4795d46a0eb940c6b84f4bd039f76686

This stat is incredible and yet not surprising.

According to Champion Data, Melbourne has won 18 more takeaways than the opposition per 100 centre bounces when Oliver is there.

That number drops by 12 on average whenever he wanders outside the centre bounce setup.

the bloke is just a Football marvel. There are some blokes I worry about...and some I get bloody enthused about

Strangely we have very few of the former now and Clarry is a real excitement machine.. why ?   He makes things HAPPEN

Whoever spotted this blokes talent....take a bow

oh

and keep looking ;)

We definitely nailed this pick - interesting to see the difference between our drafting and Collingwoods since Taylor came over no wonder Eddie was filthy when we poached him.

there in lies an absolute.

Taylor has been a coup, no doubt about it. Makes me somewhat salivate at what smokey of a gem we'll pluck come end of season  (no rush to get there btw )

The recruiting of recent years has been the cheese to the chalk of previous efforts

We actually seem to know what we're doing now. A far cry from previous years

It goes that we had our eyes on OIlver for a whiles and followed him intently, then made the call on what we KNEW not what the outside world thought we ought to do

I'll be honest...the most recent player on our list to get me siting , watching, interested ...prior to Claryy was  Jurrah. He played with the ball, Clarry just plays with the opposition.

When Clarry, Truck, Gus  et all hit their straps together with the old men of Chunk and Bernie  and a decent supporting cast it will be a fearsome combination.

Seeing him, in his first few games, just nail those handballs often under intense pressure, just takes my breath away at times. Just awesome.

Nice article.  Spot on with the facts and adjectives.  So glad Clarry is ours!

Yeah, Jay Clark seems to have some love for Melbourne at the moment. Very odd.

is he part of out "wider circle " ?

Oliver & Petracca are currently averaging over 10 contested possessions a game. They are ranked 3rd & 2nd at the MFC and around 40th overall for the competition. Pretty amazing for young players who have played less than 5 games(grain of salt with Petracca only playing two games but I'm sure it will continue or even get better).

its an Oliver thread but the nuance of Truck is a good question. I think theyll like playing with each other..as well as Viney   a kinda Rat pack

Im glad we took Clarry, indeed conspired and traded  picks to get Clarry.. even more the point Im glad we knew it WAS Clarry  to get . AM sure Parish will be a player.... not like this animal though

betcha theres more than a few kids in a schoolyard with #13 right now :)

explanation

pretty amazing really how he just clicked and looked at home right from round 1, and playing in the guts too. kid has a lot of self belief and determination

oh hope its contagious

I just like typing this out. How's this for a midfield: Viney, Oliver, Petracca with support from Tyson, Brayshaw and even Salem. Not to mention older guys in Vince and Jones. And the addition of Prestia next year. ;) That's a deep and talented midfield.

What sticks with me is someone posted on here, I think it was last year at Lunar Park? he'd had a chat with Hoges, and he'd said that in 4 years time we'd be unstoppable, that was buy in to me at the time and despite the current MFCSS I'm hanging on to that.

especially intriguing when in his interviews he presents as being unsure how about how good he is

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

  • PREGAME: Essendon

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 04

Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors. Port Adelaide vs St Kilda at Adelaide Oval looms as a interesting clash, with both clubs form being very hard to read. The round wraps up with Fremantle taking on the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium in what could be a fierce contest between two sides with top-eight ambitions. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?
