You're kidding yourself.  Really, you are.

Jesse Hogan plays in Round 1 no matter what.  Even if he plays in two NAB Cup games and doesn't get a kick, he plays.

The same goes for a number of other players.  We aren't Hawthorn.  We need our best 22 on the park.  The players might be on 'notice', but any person with half a brain knows that guys like Jones, Vince, Viney, McDonald, Gawn, Garland, Dunn, Salem, Tyson etc. will be playing in Round 1 if they aren't injured.  That's just common sense.

Garbage. There is not even the slightest possibility that N.Jones and Hogan would not be selected for round 1. In fact they would have to go through an extraorfinarily awful and lengthy run of bad form to be dropped. There are 'locks' at every club.

This is what I love about this site, I didn't say Hogan and Jones wouldn't be playing, I said the 'best' 22 will be on the park, that is the fittest and most in form, in the opinion of the coaching panel, not the supporters

You don't know anything about football because you don't go to watch training.

Watching games isn't the same as training.

This is absolutely it - You look at the Hawks last year - they wanted big seasons from Roughhead, Mitchell, Lewis, Rioli. Our expectation rose and fell on the back of a 20 year old forward who was in his first year of football.

No. Wiseblood asked you a direct question and you answered it incorrectly.

41 minutes ago, Satyriconhome said:

Serious answer - the 22 for Rd 1 will consist of the fittest and most in form players at that moment, as I stated in another post, the players are on notice, you have to earn your spot and perform consistently to keep it.

You will also notice that on the club website report for the final training session at Maroochydore, Nathan Jones was praised for his improved field running, a best and fairest winner who has had to improve this part of his game to make sure he gets a game

Your last sentence would allude to that.

"had to improve this part of his game to ensure he gets a game".

Don't twist your words and meaning around now.  You said that no one was guaranteed a game, and I argued that this notion is ridiculous as we have a number of players who are an automatic walk up start.

If you didn't say Hogan and Jones wouldn't be playing then you should have said SOME spots are up for grabs, not all.

Not wanting to buy into the arguing Wise, but just interested to pose a thought...

If, if Hogan came back from the six week break (or however long it was) pre Xmas with terrible skin folds having not done anything in WA and had a lacklustre preseason, would you automatically still pick him round 1? Hypothetical, obviously.

Wise and C & B, nothing that Saty said was wrong, controversial, inflammatory, opinionated or anything other than solid contribution.

Youve both gone out of your way to create an argument. Sort yourselves out, it's garbage and doesn't add to the conversation.

excuse me, there is a discussion going on about whether there is such thing as guaranteed spots in the 22. We are allowed to add our opinion. Saty is wrong on this occasion and we are respectfully arguing why. That's kinda, you know, the whole point of this site, yeah? Telling other people to play by your own personal rules of posting is not my idea of a solid contribution mate.

Yes.

Leigh Mathews said before the 2004 GF an injured Johno Brown is still better than the next best available.

Anyways lets get back to Clayton Oliver who i am genuinely excited to see play this year. Will be very interesting to see if Roosy does a 'Brayshaw' with him see how he goes at VFL level first. Going by the training reports seem to be really impressing so far!

I haven't changed or twisted my words, I still stand by my opinion that finally we have reached a stage with the squad that nobody can be guaranteed a spot and you will have to earn it, hopefully both Nathan Jones and Jesse Hogan will be injury free, fully fit and in top form to be included in the 22 for the first game

do you realise that you are currently reading a football discussion forum? Is there something else you were expecting to find other than people exchanging opinions?

Of course I do Curry; but sometimes watching a thread devolve into a case of school yard "he said - he said" point scoring and finger pointing does not really add much to the experience.

This just seems like point scoring and hairsplitting for the sake of it.  But you give it your best shot;  I am sure that you don't need my permission.

Is that a realistic hypothetical though, mate?  It sounded like a few players returned from the 6 week break before pre-season a little underdone, but would the modern footballer turn up with terrible skin folds these days?  They might not do everything asked of them, or play basketball and injure themselves, but you would have to do plenty of terrible things not to get picked if you're Hogan.  Roos himself even suggested that, even though he is disappointed with the injury Petracca sustained, he is still well and truly in the running to play Round 1.  That tells us plenty.

I wasn't looking to start an argument and derail the thread in this case, more that the idea that every spot is up for grabs is ludicrous and we all know it.  We need to play our best players each and every week.

Don't want to turn this into a [censored] sling contest but if Paul Roos can continue to play Nathan Jones with a busted neck all year then I'm pretty sure he will be in his round 1 side regardless of he is 80% fit..

Look at our round 1 side last year. We had a very healthy list and we still played Kent Vanden Brayshaw who all had interrupted pre season's and had to play couple of games at Casey first.

It's all about the sniff of a game, knowing that you think you're better than the older, more experienced blokes already in the team

but never quite getting the opportunity to prove it so you try and do it at a pleasant Sunday morning. Not a good result!

A good coach will just keep giving you the scent.....

Rubbish.  I had an opinion that differed and responded in kind.  I wasn't rude about it.

Your post, however, added nothing to the conversation either, so go ahead and sort yourself out.

Have you seen the one of Uma Thurman doing the rounds on FB.

"Uma killed Bill..."

If training form gets you a spot in our round 1 side then Terlich, Matt Jones and Jack Grimes will be playing..

I do not want that.

Nathan Jones had a bulging deformed disc in his neck that could be managed,  but  we hardly had any midfield replacements who were fit banging the door down at Casey.

Even though we had a healthy list we now know Roos' opinion of some of the midfield 'talent' we had on our list at the start of last season.

Now we have what we have all been crying out for for the last couple of seasons, real depth, true some of it is still unproven, but at least it will keep the 'locks' honest

Oliver being one of those unproven

Nathan Jones would be the first player picked IMV and rightly so!

Why this thread was sabbotaged beats me.

I agree with Dazzle Man the thread is about Clayton Oliver and if he turns out to be half as good as chunky I will be reasonably pleased.

As good or better, I will be rubbing my hands with Glee!

If he's only half as good as Jones I'll be devastated.

If he's as good as Jones I'll be disappointed.

I fully expect Oliver to be a better player than Jones.  We need him to be a better player than Jones.

  • PREVIEW: Fremantle

A month is a long time in AFL football. The proof of this is in the current state of the two teams contesting against each other early this Saturday afternoon at the MCG. It’s hard to fathom that when Melbourne and Fremantle kicked off the 2025 season, the former looked like being a major player in this year’s competition after it came close to beating one of the favourites in the GWS Giants while the latter was smashed by Geelong to the tune of 78 points and looked like rubbish. Fast forward to today and the Demons are low on confidence and appear panic stricken as their winless streak heads towards an even half dozen and pressure mounts on the coach and team leadership.  Meanwhile, the Dockers have recovered their composure and now sit in the top eight. They are definitely on the up and up and look most likely winners this weekend against a team which they have recently dominated and which struggles to find enough passages to the goals to trouble the scorers. And with that, Fremantle will head to the MCG, feeling very good about itself after demolishing Richmond in the Barossa Valley with Josh Treacy coming off a six goal haul and facing up to a Melbourne defence already without Jake Lever and a shaky Steven May needing to pass a fitness test just to make it onto the field of play.

  • NON-MFC: Round 06

The Easter Round kicks off in style with a Thursday night showdown between Brisbane and Collingwood, as both sides look to solidify their spots inside the Top 4 early in the season. Good Friday brings a double-header, with Carlton out to claim consecutive wins when they face the struggling Kangaroos, while later that night the Eagles host the Bombers in Perth, still chasing their first victory of the year. Saturday features another marquee clash as the resurgent Crows look to rebound from back-to-back losses against a formidable GWS outfit. That evening, all eyes will be on Marvel Stadium where Damien Hardwick returns to face his old side—the Tigers—coaching the Suns at a ground he's never hidden his disdain for. Sunday offers two crucial contests where the prize is keeping touch with the Top 8. First, Sydney and Port Adelaide go head-to-head, followed by a fierce battle between the Bulldogs and the Saints. Then, Easter Monday delivers the traditional clash between two bitter rivals, both desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top end of the ladder. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
