Jesse Hogan plays in Round 1 no matter what.  Even if he plays in two NAB Cup games and doesn't get a kick, he plays.  

The same goes for a number of other players.  We aren't Hawthorn.  We need our best 22 on the park.  The players might be on 'notice', but any person with half a brain knows that guys like Jones, Vince, Viney, McDonald, Gawn, Garland, Dunn, Salem, Tyson etc. will be playing in Round 1 if they aren't injured.  That's just common sense.

This is what I love about this site, I didn't say Hogan and Jones wouldn't be playing, I said the 'best' 22 will be on the park, that is the fittest and most in form, in the opinion of the coaching panel, not the supporters

Watching games isn't the same as training.

Don't twist your words and meaning around now.  You said that no one was guaranteed a game, and I argued that this notion is ridiculous as we have a number of players who are an automatic walk up start.

If you didn't say Hogan and Jones wouldn't be playing then you should have said SOME spots are up for grabs, not all.

If, if Hogan came back from the six week break (or however long it was) pre Xmas with terrible skin folds having not done anything in WA and had a lacklustre preseason, would you automatically still pick him round 1? Hypothetical, obviously.

excuse me, there is a discussion going on about whether there is such thing as guaranteed spots in the 22. We are allowed to add our opinion. Saty is wrong on this occasion and we are respectfully arguing why. That's kinda, you know, the whole point of this site, yeah? Telling other people to play by your own personal rules of posting is not my idea of a solid contribution mate.

Anyways lets get back to Clayton Oliver who i am genuinely excited to see play this year. Will be very interesting to see if Roosy does a 'Brayshaw' with him see how he goes at VFL level first. Going by the training reports seem to be really impressing so far!

I haven't changed or twisted my words, I still stand by my opinion that finally we have reached a stage with the squad that nobody can be guaranteed a spot and you will have to earn it, hopefully both Nathan Jones and Jesse Hogan will be injury free, fully fit and in top form to be included in the 22 for the first game

Of course I do Curry; but sometimes watching a thread devolve into a case of school yard "he said - he said" point scoring and finger pointing does not really add much to the experience.  

This just seems like point scoring and hairsplitting for the sake of it.  But you give it your best shot;  I am sure that you don't need my permission.

Is that a realistic hypothetical though, mate?  It sounded like a few players returned from the 6 week break before pre-season a little underdone, but would the modern footballer turn up with terrible skin folds these days?  They might not do everything asked of them, or play basketball and injure themselves, but you would have to do plenty of terrible things not to get picked if you're Hogan.  Roos himself even suggested that, even though he is disappointed with the injury Petracca sustained, he is still well and truly in the running to play Round 1.  That tells us plenty.

I wasn't looking to start an argument and derail the thread in this case, more that the idea that every spot is up for grabs is ludicrous and we all know it.  We need to play our best players each and every week.

Don't want to turn this into a [censored] sling contest but if Paul Roos can continue to play Nathan Jones with a busted neck all year then I'm pretty sure he will be in his round 1 side regardless of he is 80% fit..

Look at our round 1 side last year. We had a very healthy list and we still played Kent Vanden Brayshaw who all had interrupted pre season's and had to play couple of games at Casey first.

It's all about the sniff of a game, knowing that you think you're better than the older, more experienced blokes already in the team

but never quite getting the opportunity to prove it so you try and do it at a pleasant Sunday morning. Not a good result!

Nathan Jones had a bulging deformed disc in his neck that could be managed,  but  we hardly had any midfield replacements who were fit banging the door down at Casey.

Even though we had a healthy list we now know Roos' opinion of some of the midfield 'talent' we had on our list at the start of last season.

Now we have what we have all been crying out for for the last couple of seasons, real depth, true some of it is still unproven, but at least it will keep the 'locks' honest

Oliver being one of those unproven

I fully expect Oliver to be a better player than Jones.  We need him to be a better player than Jones.
