Seeing the class of the hawks on Saturday got me wondering, who from our current list will make up our next flag tilt, who is actually good enough to play at the standards we have seen from the premiers. I bet this is what the coaching/drafting staff have done, and is an excellent way to determine what other players are needed on our list.

Potential has been included, if they have shown enough to warrant it.

FB: Jetta - 1 - Dunn

HB: Salem - McDonald - 2

C: Vince - N.Jones - 6

HF: 3 - Hogan - Kent

FF: Garlett - 4 - 5

R: Gawn - Viney - Brayshaw

I: Tyson - Vanders - x - x

So, this shows we still need:

1) A tall defender who locks down

2) A classy rebounder

3) A HF type who can rotate in the mid

4) A FF who can help Hogan and ruck for 30% of the game

5) A FP who can play big and small

6) A winger who can run all day and is lightning quick

Who could fill these roles?

1) Frost, potential trade in, potential draftee

2) Stretch, potential trade in, potential draftee

3) Petrecca, Newton, ANB, JKH

4) potential trade in, potential draftee

5) potential trade in, potential draftee

6) potential trade in, potential draftee

So, from this, it seems we should be hunting this period:

- A FF who can develop with Hogan

- A classy winger/mid to help with our speed and young guns

- A smart FP like T.Dickson, who can lead up and provide pressure.

The rest we can see if we have develop with our own stocks, and if not, turn our attention there in 2016,17,etc

Put Stretch Jnr in there, I seriously think this kid will be awesometacular!!

You'll need to fill Vince's spot. He won't be around by the time we're within shooting distance of a GF so whether he's good enough is irrelevant. Dunn is also highly doubtful.

Pretty sure Jones will play til he's 35 if he has to, and the club should let him. So you can leave him in.

Stretch is good enough, and surely the only thing stopping Petracca is injury. Stretch on the wing, Trac at HFF.

As good as the Hawks playing list is, they are brilliantly coached by Clarkson. The bloke is a mastermind

It's hard to do this thread by measuring potential while also including current older players like Dunn, Vince and Jones. When do you expect the players included on the team based on potential to be good enough to make a GF? Will Jones/Vince/Dunn be around then?

Not wanting to be a misery guts but this has been indicative of our mindset for years. It was the bedrock made of sand that the red and blueprint was built on.
That it's all just going to happen.
Sure we need good players but we also need a lot of hard work and patience. Not to sound too dee-luded on us all, but the culture that the club is developing now is just as important (if not more so) as the players we recruit. It was the reason we hired Roos in the first place.

We only have a half dozen who are good enough right now Jones, Vince, Viney, Hogan, Garlett, and McDonald , the rest are just speculation

This was harder than I expected, because after all, there have only been a handful of separate premiership 'squads' in the last decade. I decided the point was made by the time Steven Armstrong was added.

Very clearly, there aren't any midfielders on this list. Despite going back over ten premiership teams, and having a large surplus of tall forwards, rucks, and small/medium forwards, there weren't even any HFF who I could slot into the midfield to make up space.

The other area with very few 'ordinary role players' was defense. Guerra and Lumumba have had up and down careers but at their peak, during their premiership season, they were excellent players. It could easily be argued these two should be removed, and possible I only included Lumumba to make fun of people with 'gun only' lists. That leaves just a couple of weak players left in the whole defense.

So there's the lesson - the areas that a team can most afford to have role-players are tall forwards, small forwards, and rucks.

Role players are pretty much everyone outside the midfield with a few exceptions in the midfield like a tagger.

Hogan is a role player - he is also a transcendent talent - but he plays an important role on the ground, if he started chasing kicks on a wing or behind the footy we wouldn't appreciate it, it is the forward roles that he plays across the HF line and deep that define his talent.

Having dominant forwards are great, and I am looking forward to watching Hogan's Forwardline for a decade, but midfields win flags and that is where you just cannot hide anyone. Finals show you up.

If you don't bat deep in the midfield, you won't get deep into September.
