I can't find anything in the WADA rules that cover a team situation where players have long-term contracts. I know that in cycling, if you're banned, you aren't paid by your team. Maybe someone else has clear info.

At the very least, he would lose match payments (as in the Crowley case), and if the contract is mainly built around match payments, then we don't leave ourselves with too much of a financial millstone.

As for bans, I've always thought that they'd be banned. 2 years, but a reduction for no significant fault, probably down to 18 months, perhaps 12 months. But they've already served 6 months or so, and it also depends on what's currently happening. It's the off-season again, so have these players restarted their provisional bans, just in case?

IOW, if he only received a 12 month ban, he could be available from early next season. If it's 18 months, he would miss next season, and be ready to go when Goodwin takes over. Also, on returning from a ban, you can return to (team) training 2 months before the end of the ban.

I dont think WADA do...cover it.. The AFL does. Whether they are paid or not, or what comes under player payments cap etc is for the AFL and the AFLPA do deal with.

WADA's component in this is to say whether they CAN or CAN'T play. How thats dealt with afterwards is in most cases up to the respective sport or code.

Would there be a provision in the contract in the case of a WADA ban? If not this could be a disaster.

I am more concerned with WADA.

$400k per year is about $100k over basic AFL pay. So it's not that much. if we get rid of a number of players on that basic pay, we obviously have plenty to spend and then we draft young players on start up pay.

I am unsure how good Melksham is but I would imagine he is better than M. Jones, Bail, Terlich, McKenzie and Riley who look like following Jamar and Cross off the list. That is 7 before we start trading.

Any contractual deal regarding WADA, assuming it can be written in by some clever lawyer, would at best only related to our payments being terminated for a guilty finding with suspension. It would do nothing about wasting a spot on our list.

Still, IF we do go for him I would sincerely hope that a get out clause is written in his contract. Anything less would be totally amateurish and unacceptable.

Demons' offer to Bomber Jake Melksham is 'too good to refuse'

ESSENDON hasn't yet determined what it expects in exchange for midfielder Jake Melksham, who is set to head to Melbourne on a deal the Bombers believe is "too good to refuse".

Melksham last week officially informed the Bombers he was leaving after six seasons and 114 games with the club, and looks set to join the Demons on what is likely to be a four-year contract.

Essendon list manager Adrian Dodoro told AFL.com.au's Road to the Draft podcast that he had spoken to the 24-year-old last week and that he understood his reasons for leaving.

Dodoro cited Melksham's friendship with Goodwin, who was the midfield assistant at Essendon before moving to Melbourne as senior assistant, as an important factor but the strength of the Demons' offer was the clincher.

Essendon had recently put a two-year offer to Melksham.

"I think his relationship with Simon Goodwin played a pretty big part in it. They got on exceptionally well, they're very close," Dodoro said.

"It definitely had nothing to do with the things going on at the club the last couple of years, he said that. He rang me last week and he was virtually in tears when he told me he was leaving.

"He was leaving basically because I think the offer was good, and he's a young man who's about to have a family and the offer was too good to refuse, plus his relationship with Simon was pretty strong. That's his call."

Dodoro said he had spoken with Melbourne list manager Todd Viney on Tuesday to set up a meeting, but that there hadn't yet been any discussions about whether the Demons' second-round draft pick would be in play for Melksham.

We rate Goodwin. Goodwin rates Melksham. Melksham wants to be here. Let's hope the form of 2013 prior to the investigation is a more appropriate gauge of his abilities. Like Bugg, he's competitive, hard running and can hit targets.
