Training - Wednesday 11th February, 2015 at Casey Fields

Hows Garlett been Training? Didn't really see him today, wasn't with the main group so i assume he doesn't have the endurance to play round one, Potentially sub.

Nah, sorry chap, one of the best athletes at the club, doesn't look it when he drags himself across the other field at Goschs, always one of the last to arrive, but does everything asked without breaking a sweat some times, and then drags himself back again, in the match sims he just glides around, think we tend to forget he has been around quite a while, played over a hundred games, seasoned professional and knows how to get through pre season...going offline for a couple of days, will drop a report from Fridays training, late on Friday

I am enjoying the reports so thanks again but two things.....(this is directed at the players not the people reporting)

1 - I'm sick and tired of hearing they're learning the gameplan or they're learning two way running. Are some of them just plain dumb? Every year they go through TAC they get a new coach and a slight variation on the previous gameplan. Those who gave been at the club for a period of time have seen many coaches come and go hence multiple game plans. There's only so many ways you can play the game. The have a coach/line coaches/group meetings/one on one meeting looking at replays of games. I'm no longer buying "they're learning". First year players excluded.

2 - I think we are getting ahead of ourselves with our new found depth. For example Newton and Frost I think have the makings of great AFL players but still have to prove themselves. Then we have the coming back from injury or consistently injured Garland/Toumpas then there's the getting a game but not quite up to it Grimes/McKenzie then there's out ruck department. Still a lot of unknowns for mine.

Thanks for the reports.

By the way, Casey is closer to Tas than Sydney.

whichever way you look it - it's not close to Melbourne

( before the baying for blood starts - tongue is firmly in cheek)

I was eating lunch, whilst reading this, actually BBO may like this, I live in Collingwood but eat in a café on Victoria St, today we had a fully tattooed gentleman in muscle singlet and baggy denim shorts and a rather fetching pair of bright red high heels and matching lipstick, the joy of inner city livng

Doesn't sound your type

I am reading between the lines.

I would suspect it is not so much the learning of the game plan as practicing it properly and consistently until it is second nature.

The comment that keeps resonating with me is the professionalism of the training that was obviously absent pre Roos.

So in training simulations you get the ball and have a maximum of 2 seconds to dispose of it. When your teammate upfield gets the ball you have a split second to decide where to run. In that split second you also have to factor in where your teammate is going to deliver it and where your other teammates are running.

So learning the gameplan to me is more about constant repetition until you instinctively take the right option by running to the right places and disposing to the right options.

It is so pleasing for me to hear the coaches bailing up ( pardon the pun) the players when they don't take correct options or run to the right places.

I absolutely buy that they are "learning" - I read "learning" as drilling in the same ways over and over again.

1 - when people use the term 'learning', I'm fairly sure you can substitute the word 'practicing' most of the time. Or do you expect them just to run laps until the season starts?

2 - I totally agree. We know what we'll get from Lumumba, and if Garlett has a good season it will assist - but even Newton is an unknown so unless we get some unexpected growth from Toumpas/Salem/JKH or one of the draftees, then we haven't added more than a little bit of depth to our middle. We are still a couple of good quality midfielders away from the standard I reckon.

Just beat me to it there mate.

Hogan IS the difference , a forward line that has:

Kent Dawes ?

Garlett Hogan Gawn

thrown in with a Watts, Newton, Petracca , JKH

is a quantum leap from where we were last year.

I think we've all been guilty of overrating our side in the past couple of years. I hope there's a a few players that have breakout years, I really think we're getting it right this time but it's just bloody hard because we've been here so many times before.

'Al', I think we can at least see that Newton and Frost are a step up from some that have left the club but you are right in that they have yet to prove themselves.

I'm pretty confident that Newton will step up to the mark this year though.

Yeah that's a fair call but I don't want to be hearing it from the coach in a press conference after we've had our pants pulled down come round 5 or 6. As we know last year was all about all about defense and learning defensive structures this year were working on quick ball movement and quicker delivery inside 50 now that we have some options up there. It will be interesting to see what happens when were 1 kick out of the 50, do we hold it up and until we have a man on his own or get it in there and if a mark isn't taken let the Garlett's and JKH's do what do best, play instinctive football. I hope part of this "learning" is backing your teammate.

I'll do a 22 as of today, and just 22, and those fully fit as of today, and what I have seen at training

Dunn, Frost, McDonald, Grimes, Lumumba Jetta

Jamar, Jones x 2, Tyson, Cross, McKenzie

Hogan, Dawes , Gawn, Kent, JKH, Garlett

Toumpas, Salem, Newton, sub:Petracca

Dawes won't be there Rd 1 so Pedersen

Garland if fit replaces Frost who goes to the bench, meaning one of Salem or Toumpas would drop off

If Watts and Vince are fit, would have to have a rethink

And so it goes on

I think they will 'fit' Frost in. Lumumba to the midfield or Garland to the bench. Dunn marking the third or fourth tall is more desired.

Matt Jones, McKenzie, and Toumpas will play themselves in or out of the Rd 1 team in the Pre Season games.

Vince will be hard to leave out - he has so much time before Rd 1. 51 days is a mountain of time for a seasoned pro.

I don't know about anyone else, but I am missing footy more than ever this Summer and reading this doesn't help.

I reckon Michie, M.Jones, Newton and Bail will all play round 1. Roosy loves good honest foot soldiers who play a role

Yep

The rest is dancing with your sister

Your sister must have been a good sort or a helluva dancer

You do refer to her a bit

And you are having a go at Casey..............

some good reports from todays training, I was there for most of the session so just thought I'd add a few things.

firstly on salem working 1 on 1 with rawlings it seemed as tho they were trying to teach salem how to compete 1 on 1 without getting stuck in a wrestling match, salem would start behind and rawlings would back back and try and initiate body contact and hold salem out while salem would try and avoid wrestling and either spoil from the side or cut in front to take the intercept mark.
this may not have been the exact intent of the drill but that's how it appeared to me and would make sense if they're planning to play him down back.

and i think a few of the boys that appeared to be missing today may have been down the road at the pools because as i was leaving riley was at his car changing into a different pair of shorts and trengove had also just pulled up and was heading into the rooms.

Any questions feel free to ask but I've been to 3 or 4 sessions over the preseason and todays was probably the lightest I've seen so hard to take too much from it, the boys seemed pretty relaxed.

1 - I am really sick of that too. It's football. Pretty much everyone on here has a more complicated job to get a handle of on a daily basis.

2 - Disagree on the grounds of sheer quantity - I look at our list and I see about 16 players I am happy to take into an AFL match with confidence - for the other 6 spots in the side I honestly think we have about 18 'could-be' type players competing for them. Some of them are brand new draftees and others are closer to veteran status. It gives me great confidence that at the end of the day we should be taking a highly competitive 22 into battle each week regardless of who those 'could-be' players are, the ones that outperform the others to earn their spots. It's going to be fascinating to see who is there at the end of year, I think we are in for some big surprises, and no doubt Roosy has some things in store with regard to players in roles we weren't expecting. Can't wait.

I think this was part of the initiative at Maroochydore - to build confidence in all the players that they have each other's back. In other words a confidence that each player will play their role. Only time will tell.

I'm not trying to talk myself up but this once happened to me.

Ruck man tapped the ball to me in the midfield, with some momentum I threw it on the boot and kicked it high to a contest about 35m from our goal, I sprinted to the contest and after I couple of fumbles by others I won the ball again and kicked it through for a goal. Within a minute we were back in the middle ready to go again

I'm just putting an emphasis on how simple football can be.

No Grimes for me Keep Salem or the Toump

Crazy talk. Grimes has his issues, but he is in the LG which reflects how poor our collection of senior leaders is. There is no chance in hell he would be left out for some kid with zero runs on the board, just won't happen.

Refer the final 30 seconds of our game aganist GC

Kick-out from the goalsquare by Dunn - 60 metre torp to near the centre of the ground

Jeremy Howe pack screamer, quickly followed by 50 metre drop punt to true full-forward position

C.Dawes on the lead, in front, marks easily. Siren goes. Goes back, kicks goal (we lost by 8 points)

  • Thank You Simon Goodwin

As Demon fans, we’ve ridden a rollercoaster of emotions over the decades; the heartbreaks, the near misses, the wooden spoons, and the endless waiting. But through it all, we clung to hope. And then came Simon Goodwin. Before he ever wore red and blue, he was a champion in his own right. A five-time All-Australian, two-time Best and Fairest, and two-time premiership hero and Captain with Adelaide, Simon Goodwin was always destined to lead. When he transitioned from the field to the coach's box, first as an assistant at Essendon, he began shaping a new legacy.

  • PREVIEW: Western Bulldogs

Long ago and far away, the Melbourne Football Club replaced its coach in difficult circumstances after the team suffered a devastating loss. In the aftermath, I penned the following words: “Then came the politics, the intrigue, the axing, the sound of the football world laughing at a club, the circling of the media vultures, the reinvention of history, the anger, the irony, the pathos, the hurt on the face of the president, the dignified departure of the coach, and the determination of the newly appointed caretaker.” Today, we’re back in the same place although one difference here is that the coach who was terminated this time is Simon Goodwin, the man who four years ago

  • REPORT: West Coast

The Charles Dickens novel, A Tale of Two Cities, opens with, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, …”  This phrase highlights many of the significant challenges that humanity encounters in life, ranging from experiencing remarkable highs to living in times of despair. This is a concept that should resonate with all supporters of the Melbourne Football Club this morning as they reflect on its comprehensive 83-point victory over the struggling West Coast Eagles at Marvel Stadium. The outcome proved beyond doubt that they are the worst of clubs and that we are the best of the worst.
