This game showed us a few things.

1) You need a functioning forward line. We proved today if you have targets and a half decent midfield delivering to them, then you have the fundamentals for victory. Dawes (in the best 8 possession game I have ever seen), Frawley and Watts drifting forward helped tremendously and gave the midfield confidence that their hard work would be rewarded. Carlton, despite some cameos from Casboult and Henderson early on, had nothing to kick to and this was their undoing. Kreuzer and Waite would have helped.

2) Spencer does well with support. While Pedo and Dawesy clearly weren't the main men in the ruck, it was nice to see Spencil not carry all the load. Warnock wasn't as bad as some say on here (he was level with Spencer as far as Dream Team points go) but I think having Pedo take some centre bounces and Dawes taking one or two ruck contests in the forward half helped Jake.

3) Confidence means a lot and club success means more than slogans and promises. When Carlton came out and told us they had made a 'promise' to never play like they did against Essendon ever again, I raised eyebrows. It sounded like the same kind of stuff that came out of the Dees over the last 2 years. PJ got it right in his 'On the Couch' interview last year. Form based on emotion and nothing tangible never lasts. Carlton may have gotten together and worked themselves into a frenzy and they did start well but it doesn't address their underlying problems (i.e. their list isn't half as good as they think it is).

I hope you recorded the game so your grandson can enjoy watching the boys win.

I have just got an email from the dees which shows the team song. U should have one too I would guess.

Goes to show how important a win is when the club sends the email within and hour or so of winning a game.

He was still finding his feet last week as it was his first game back, but today showed his quality and he is a leader. Love it Viney.

Must admit at the start of the game when they kicked 2 quick goals I was thinking no not again.

Probably the 5 guys I'd pick to have out of the team if we played them. Mel/Mel double half/full time was paying 12/1 before Robinson's withdraw.

Good win and deserved. I thought Richmond (NAB) and St.Kilda were great games from us, but this Carlton side was at its weakest ebb.

Gibbs and Murphy were so overrated it aint funny. Penny is dropping though.

Spencer is finally getting some games on end, getting a feel for it, and believing he deserves to be there. Make no mistake, he is highly rated by the coaching staff. Other than Naitanui, is there a faster ruckman in the AFL at his height? Most oppositions still think they can run away from him. His kicking is not terrible, and he takes a good mark. Still lots of upside to the pencil.

We're getting more glimpses of the hard nut midfield that Roos and Stone are looking to create also. Viney is a monster, Tyson loves it in close, and Riley (pig dog) is yet to debut. If Michie finds some form, and Jordie McKenzie gets to just concentrate on his role each week, I think we can have a culture setting grunt of a midfield in the coming years.

And $600 win as well.

The other bloke I think is being heavily overrated, both on here and in the votes today is Grimes. His first half was bordering on poor. However, he came into the game in the second half and showed a little bit more composure. He was even hitting targets with his left foot. Viney and Cross were the guys giving Jones the cut out today.

Judd sure. But I'd take out Simpson (shocked he isn't their captain and doesn't get more of a run in the guts) and Henderson (better than Waite) next and even though they are much maligned Murphy and Gibbs. Robinson and Bell butcher the ball, they wouldn't have helped much. Waite and Garlett were a nice help from Mick, but we might have beat them regardless.

As good as Frawley and Dunn were forward I'd love them back along with Garland. And to have Gawn, a fit Dawes (played minimal minutes), Hogan and Howe forward. We would've scored more and they would've been lucky to even score against a first choice backline of Frawley, McDonald, Dunn and Garland patrolling half back.

Agree of Grimes. A game of two halves. Credit for a strong second half though. Hopefully he turns it around. Is going to ground easily and still not nearly as clean as he should be by hand under pressure. But he's defending well, nailed young Menzel and is attacking the ball like a skipper.

Disagree on Bail. He's always running to present. It's that running along with Dawes that allowed space for all the other forwards. I think he gets tired because he actually goes both ways. Same thing happened with Toumpas early in the year. It's much easier to not get tired at half forward if you never run to present! How many times was Bail the man open on the far side of the ground for the switch or next kick? That's how I judge a good half forward flanker.

We saw how tired the guys got at the end of the second half today because how effort it took to attack and win! I was never so happy to actually see a team burning through energy!

I'm absolutely thrilled that we got this win. I missed most of the game, but once I get it downloaded I intend to watch the hell out of it.

I say from today we keep Chipper forward.
I know he wants to play there. Not that we should be pandering to player demands but if he keeps showing the form that he has down there and he is happy playing that position, I can only see that as a positive in moving into contract negotiations with him.

No apologies needed, I think Bail is the ultimate confidence player, I think he has some great skills but doubts his own ability.

i think it's all confidence with Grimes, we know how good he is, but today's game could be the start for him, he has had so much pressure on him over the past years and he would still feel a lot of pressure being the captain, but it's small steps, he showed his courage at times today and footy smarts today, which is what I remember being his best attributes.

You are not being the realistic/ fun police when saying Bail just jogs around normally, but if you feel the need to apologise, it should be for making such a clueless comment.

AM I the only one who wonders if playing Chip forward is being used as a chance to look at what our backline will look like without him? Maybe try a few players back there to see who can take his place?
