This thread is quite humorous. I don't give a rats on the successor to Roos at this stage. I actually want to enjoy the Roos years.

Not sure why we're still trying to solve this problem today. Its now officially a non issue for 13

Invariably its most likely a whole truckload of candidates will emerge over the coming season.

This whole equation will change character in that timeframe.

If it was to be a former player the club was going to look at (Ling, Black, etc), I would like to see us give Brett Kirk another year at Freo and see what sort of an impact he is having... if they make consecutive GF's, you would have to think he is doing something right and you would have to think he is a fast learner. That experience would be invaluable and in my opinion, must put him a long way ahead of the likes of Ling and Black.

Why do you prefer Ling?

I'm sure Black worked hard, but he excelled because of his vision, class and skill.

Intrinsic abilities that can't really be taught or passed on.

He'll leave Brisbane with not the best culture in the world, when he should be one of the drivers.

He hasn't been nurturing the Lions' kids - he's neglected them to the point of being disillusioned and preparing for an exodus en masse.

And although Brown mitigates this somewhat, as it would be difficult to beat or unseat him for the captaincy, he was not even captain of his own club.

Ling came into the league as a FF who was soft around the edges.

Despite a lack of skill, with pure footy smarts, determination and workrate, he turned himself into one the best runners in the AFL, and one of the best taggers the game has seen, limiting the influence of gun opponents while still winning a lot of the ball himself.

He's universally adored by those who know him or have met him.

Captained his club at a time when there were many worthy candidates, not skipping a beat after losing an exceptional leader in Harley, and to a premiership.

Played in and won just as many premierships as Black.

Inherited a club with a great culture, and left his club with one of the best football cultures seen at an AFL club.

As for being non-committal to coaching, Ling has said he definitely wants to coach, just not yet, as he wants another year in the media.

Black has not publicly said he wants to coach, or work in the media.

With Kirk, at least you know his and Roos values and philosophies on football align fairly closely.

Yep, he's all but destroyed the EFC. That's what lack of experience and a big ego does for you.

One possible successor is off to Essendon. The attached text was emailed to Norwood members this morning. This email demonstrates the obvious admiration that all Norwood people have for Nathan Bassett. He richly deserves this admiration. I wish him well in his coaching career even if Melbourne has "missed out" again.

Dear Members and Supporters

Today Nathan Bassett has informed the Club that he has accepted a role with the Essendon Football Club in the AFL.

We have been in discussions with Nathan throughout the latter part of the season to assure him that the Norwood Football Club understands his desire to pursue his ambition to Coach at the highest level but if an appropriate offer was not available that we want him to be Senior Coach at the Norwood Football Club for as long as possible.

The offer that Nathan has accepted is a great opportunity for him to continue his Coaching development and we wish him every success and we know that Essendon have made a great appointment.

Although we are sad to be losing Nathan he has established a legacy that will endure for many years here at Norwood and the Board is determined that our next Senior Coach will continue to build on the success of our back to back Premierships.

Nathan leaves the Norwood Football Club with a record that may never be broken and the gratitude of the Board, the Members and Supporters and we wish Nathan and his family all the very best with this appointment and with their move to Melbourne.

We will continue to keep our Members and supporters informed as we now progress the process of appointing a successor to Nathan.

Hird had many times spent injured working in the box with one of the best ever, & Hird is nothing if not really intelligent.

when Hird started he had the best assistant beside him he could hope for, but IMO didn't listen to bomber as closely as he should. Interestingly Hird had the players playing at a slighter build, & they played poorer, than they did after the club decided to bulk up & play more in the Bomba mold.

regarding Hayes I think he's great & IMO a fantastic fit to be a coach. One of my favorite players.

Melbourne weren't interested in him for whatever reason, it's hardly like he turned us down or we missed out.

I think that without knowing for certain, it is highly probable that we were going to appoint Dew and he dropped us.

But who the hell expects the club to come out and confirm that?

Roos main goal next season is most likely to do everything possible to get both on and off field respect back. Also trying to win as many games as possible (8-10+). If he achieves this there will be no shortage of applicants. I actually like the idea of Roos solely coaching the team for the first season without the distractions of a succession plan.

Probably right in an ideal world - My only concern would be the necessity to nab the guy before other clubs do.

If Hayes says he wants a year off first then you beauty. If he goes into coaching straight away and he's the right man for the job are you going to let him go somewhere else?

I'd have no qualms giving him a lesser role in his first year to ease him into it if he's the right guy.

Looks like we can add Scott Watters to the list of potential applicants, as long as Roos thinks he can be repaired

There wont be a successor.

Sometime in the preseason, when Roos sees the potential and the hunger of our list , and he thinks of the good times he had at Sydney with the old brigade in Stone and Misson who he is now reunited with, he will rediscover his passion and hunger to be the main man and he will commit long term.

What better legacy could a coach have than to lead this football club out of the wilderness and to the ultimate success?

I am starting to think the successor thing is all fantasy
