I'm just wondering what people would ideally like to see Melbourne get out of the upcoming trade period/draft/free agency. Hopefully Christmas will come early and it can bring us a midfield and a fighting chance at being competitive on field in 2014.
Somehow I feel we won't be able to lure a top line player through free agency, and unless we get our player development right (Chocco please), we have no hope of turning young talent into top line A grade AFL players. That being said, one can only dream right?
Ideally I'd like to see...
-Receive a priority pick before round 1
-On trade pick 1 to GWS for pick 2 and Taylor Adams
-Trade Jack Watts to Carlton for their round one pick (likely pick 11 if they stay 8th)
-Pick up Daniel Cross as a de-listed Free Agent
-Allow Colin Sylvia to leave wherever he pleases as a Free Agent and receive a compensation pick straight after our round 3 selection (likely 39)
-Draft James Aish with pick 2
-Draft Nathan Freeman with pick 3 (bit of a risk but exactly the player we need)
-Draft Christian Salem or Marcus Bontempelli with pick 11 (depending on availability)
-Draft whichever hard bodied midfielder slides to our pick 22 (hopefully either Trent Dumont, Dom Sheed or Luke Dunstan)
-Draft the best available small crumbing forward with pick 38
-Draft a medium defender with an elite kick to give us assurance coming out of defense

This will bring in Aish, Freeman, Salem/Bontempelli, Dumont/Sheed/Dunstan, Adams, Cross + later draft selections for a loss of Watts, Sylvia and Pick 1. This should give us a really even spread of young midfielders to add on to Jones, Toumpas, Viney and Kent who i feel will come along in leaps and bounds next season, as well as Cross to give us some short term stability. Add Hogan and a crumbing forward and with a fully fit Dawes and Clarke i feel 2014 wont be a complete disaster! Better yet, it could see us moving quickly up the ladder!

Realistically we might have to throw in Jamar to sweeten the GWS deal and perhaps pick 39 to sweeten the Carlton deal. Both I'd be happy to give up in their respective trades.

Ultimately, I just want us to be aggressive over the off season and to not let any quality players go easily.

These are not rumours, they are opinions of media people all with allegiances to other clubs and a barrow to push. As Jackson said the other day the commission is there to make decisions in the best interests of the game not the individual clubs. The campaign against us is working overtime but I still think we stand a very good chance of getting a priority pick.

Totally agree, other clubs feelings will not come into this for a second, we could be competitive as soon as next year if we get a PP and trade it well.

Fair bit of trading for the sake of trading there, GWS won't use picks after about 30 imo, need to trim the list as it is so would be looking for a first round pick for Adams as a guess.

Even though I know you posted most of this with your tongue firmly planted in cheek I actually agree that Swallow and Adams should be our focus plus another experienced, proven midfielder like Sewell or Cross or Thompson. I think it may just be achievable. I think the paperclip story analogy should be at the epicentre of a job interview for MFC Drating/Trading Boss. I'd give you the job!

If I had more time I would have moved that pick 14 up to pick 1 for the sake of the exercise but it was just taking too long. I also thought I'd give the old "3 bits of slop equals a dollar" a run with some of the aforementioned trades.
