As bad as the Bailey recruiting was Daniher taking those 3 wastes of time was just as bad. What was wrong with instilling some mongrel into Green, Bruce, Davey, Yze etc instead of drafting in designated hard men. Geelong took a team of decent skinny kids like Stevie J, Bartlet, Kelly and built the hardness into them. That's proper coaching.

Out future backline has some hardness. So do Viney and Jones in the middle. Hogan and Dawes up forward. Kent doesn't mind it. Time we built it in to Watts, Toumpas and co this time.

can't say I agree. Byron Pickett created some run and combined well with a then fast running Davey; angry Phil played half the season as a midfielder in a side that made finals two years in a row and would have played more had he not been suspended more. Daniher could have coached a premiership between 2005-06 if we hadn't lost Scott Thompson from a list that he built. Green and players weren't ever picked or were ever going to be hard nosed mongrels. A good coach plays to his players strengths and gets a diverse mix of players.

Bailey inherited a side that played finals the season before but without much younger talent coming through. He shaved off the older experienced players who had played in finals, recruited absolute spuds, gave them zero development so that it was ok that Cale Morton and Jordan Gysberts weighed the same two years after being drafted, sacked the captain who was the heart and soul of the side, embroiled us in tanking and left us decimated. Then Neeld came in and picked some half bakers and delistings to prop up a list that has had zero development.

Stevie j was skinny but hard and played that way always.

Line them up against Bailey and Neelds decisions, at least ND could coach a team to play and win, hell sometimes we made finals series can you imagine that?

They were both on the "poor character" list. Tom Scully was considered an upstanding and professional young player. As it turned out, he's not so much professional as mercenary. We've placed too high a value on character and leadership over actual football ability. Really, how many leaders do you need in the one side? Give me a couple of thugs who fight like hell for every ball and can kick and I'll be happy. I don't care if they go out and get drunk every now and then or get suspended for a high elbow to Chris Judd's head. I just want them to fight.

Not sure that Scully was ever anything but a bogan but some of us look at it differently. Let us re-look at Trenners next year after a full pre-season and after un-burdening himself of the captaincy. I am quietly confident that he will prove a more valueable elite player than Scully in the longterm and hi is already a much better character

Grimes looks ill. He has lost serious body mass since his shoulder and is gaunt in the face. Agree he lacks polish.

It's a real concern, when he was drafted i remember thinking Gee this guy has good skills, so i wonder if it's a composure thing, a little bit of pressure from the captaincy or something like that, doesn't take much to go from a perfect kick to a turnover.

He seems to back himself with the ball (doesn't rush himself) but I think he just lacks the poise that is needed to be a really good midfielder. I think he will always be serviceable as a mid but never great and I don't know if there are any spots in the backline anymore. Maybe he could swap positions with Clisby?

I would think so, Terlich and Clisby certainly have the capacity to play as mids, so i'm sure they might all rotate through different positions going forward, Grimes needs to work on his skills infact most of the list do, we would be a 20% better team all over the ground if we could improve the skills of each of our sub par players disposal wise, when you have three tall forwards the only way to play is to move the ball fast and get them one on one, you need skill for that,

Watts, Aish and Toumpas will be great in that aspect going forward but guys like Grimes, Mckenzie, Nicholson, Tom mcdonald, Frawley and co probably need to focus abit on becoming better kicks.

Can be all sorts of reasons why someones kicking might not be quite up to scratch, it's not uncommon that a professional sportsmen has to work on technique and things like that.

exactly... AFL is about honing skills. Lifting to another level. its not about learning the BASICS.
