Could Scharenberg be the player the Dee's have lined up for pick 2, if a trade doesn't eventuate?

Perhaps GWS know this and are wanting to tempt us off him with a trade of someone more developed. I also think we are bull-dusting about trading pick 2 out.

My sense is that Scharenberg might go alright in the midfield, and is super talented with a build that will hold up to the hurley-burley way better than Kelly or Aish....even long term.

Never said he couldnt become one

He doesnt look like an inside mid to me and that is exactly what we need

In reality outside mids are a dime a dozen with some being better than others

We all know why Darling wasnt picked and it wasnt his football ability

Dayle Garlett was overlooked last year and everyone knows the kid has talent

I thought that the prime objective was on INSIDE midfileders

Aish , Kelly are outside mids at present

Dom Sheedy and Matt Crouch are both Inside Mids

It's the conventional wisdom that they put a bit of mayo (may or may not be true) on the story but they still didn't pick him up until their 2nd round selection so they were taking a gamble there. I think his form dropped off in his last year at 18's level and this had a bit to do with him dropping back also. Can happen with big kids, recruiters seem to have different views at different time. Prime example was Grundy dropping through to the Pies last draft.

I don't think anyone is underestimating him but at this stage we only have one first round pick. Who do we take? If we want a good all round talent then it's Scharenberg, Class it's Aish, Kelly for a bit of class, clean skills, run all day, is good in and out (no matter what people say they are only looking at pix think him a skinny outside & not watching him play), best inside clearance player and mongrel is Crouch.

Grundy will likely be a better player than Vlastuin but I think the reason clubs like Richmond and North overlooked him was needs based. No one could've expected him to do so well in year one and even still he doesn't look quite good enough to be the second ruck and forward. It's a bit number 1 or bust when Richmond have Maric, North have Goldstein.

Ruck I think is one position that needs based drafting makes sense. Because unless they will be a real steal they'll end up in your 2's for a few years if you've got a good number 1. Brisbane are having that problem now with Longer.

I'm sure it has over the years but it's a lot harder to hide someone away these days with so many full time recruiters at clubs plus their spotters. I don't think tampering had anything to do with Grundy getting to Collingwood though, he was available for all to see and his form was excellent so he didn't lay down. Clubs just passed him over. Darling, everyone passed over. If the Eagles were playing games then they held their nerve well in leaving him until the 2nd round.

I think your logic is good here 'master' and I was surprised that GWS didn't pick him up. Grundy did show at 18's level that he was a good resting forward and would have been a handy pick up for the Tiges, Maric is a good honest player but Grundy will be a beauty.

One key indicator to me for a big bloke at junior level is how he attacks the ball, a lot of them just bank on their size to do the job and this is why they take time to develop at AFL level but Grundy hit the ball hard and had some mongrel (a bit like Hogan), he was always going to come on quickly at senior level.

Besides all that I was so p...off the Collingwood picked him up at 18, shouldn't have happened.

could Scharenberg slip to pick 9 ... I had Freeman as a lock for #9 BUT its a tough one if Scharenberg was available.

I think the trigger finger would be real twitchy should Scharenberg be available at 9.

There's always 'bolters' and 'sliders' at this time of year.

At the moment it looks like KK, Bontempelli, Freeman and Lennon might be in the former category, and the two SA prospects, Aish and Scharenberg, might be in the latter.

It would surprise me enormously if either were available at pick 9 - for the last year they've been touted as 2 and 3 behind Boyd.

I guess we'll know for certain in under a month.

The only problem is Freeman is really not like Dangerfield at all and the reason Scharenberg is compared to Goddard is his ability to play forward back or mid. I think Scharenberg is a more legit defender than Goddard but can play the other roles, if he was there at pick 9 you would take him. I still think he will go pick 2 to GWS.

A lot of their strengths as juniors (Freeman and Dangerfield), were/are pretty similar. The main point of difference for mine is that Dangerfield has got greater height and size, which he’s learnt to use so well in close and in the air. In his draft year, Dangerfield played most of his football on the half back line, yet still was a big contested ball winner.

“Patrick has played his best football as a midfielder, although he’s played a range of positions over the last couple of years. He’s very quick and he’s grown about five centimetres and put on about 10 kilograms in the last 12 months, so in terms of how he presented physically a year ago at the under-16 nationals compared to what he’s like now; he’s a totally different lad.

“He has excellent speed, is quite courageous and more of an inside player than an outside player at this stage despite his pace. He is a strong-willed young man who has clear ideas and has good balance in his life. At this stage he’s still completing year 11 so he has another year of schooling to complete.”

With regards to Scharenberg slipping to 9, I still feel it’s unlikely, but I can see him getting as far as 6. Then Collingwood will have to decide which 2 players they want most with 6 and 10, and which ones are likely to get passed Brisbane and Melbourne. I think Bontempelli gets past us, Salem is a toss up. Brisbane could be the ones that knock the whole order around. If they elect to go with Cameron McCarthy as the best available key tall (and go with multiple mids in the second round), that will really shake up the draft order, and may deliver Scharenberg to us.

That's a big point of difference and it makes Dangerfield a very damaging forward like their ex skipper Roo was in his day.
