Just recruit ball magnets who attack the footy

Featured Replies

For too long this club has played it too safe with its flawed recruiting plan. I want to see angry hard at it ball magnets who hunt the bloody football. Geelong has re recruited these types who will do anything to be first in to get the pill. Most of our list do not show these traits, and it is killing us every week.

No point looking back at our incompetent recruiters, so lets teach the current crop to hunt the ball.

As for future picks, I want the hardest angry and hungriest young men in the draft. Enough of soft recruiting.

dom sheed.

Isn't that what Magner is suppose to be here for?

That is what I mean, however we still give players like Nicholson a game.

Nicholson sucks, says it all really, even with with PJ in charge now i still have no confidence in any decision this club makes, im watching GC now it just makes mew sick to see the difference between the clubs.

Actually how many Hard at it ball magnets do we have on the list? Jones comes to mind, maybe Terlich

Jones, Viney, I have faith in Trenners. Grimes is hard and can rack it up but is more of a defender same with Terlich.

Dean Kent with a preseason might find more ball. But looks more of a half forward like Sylvia.

McKenzie is hard and can find the footy but isn't a 25 touches man.

Matt Jones, Toumpas and Evans should all develop into possession winners but I doubt they are really inside hard men.

The reality is even with improvement that could come from all the above players we are in need of at least 2 more regular quality mids even if they aren't elite. Maybe our first pick this year might be ready to go and get in there early even in patches. Other than that I expect it to be a wait. I'd take another shot at a mature age player to see if we can get lucky and find a priddis or Barlow

I think we need to modify the OP a bit. Ball magnets who attack the footy, have clean hands, can hit targets under pressure, understand the need for hard work, have enough mongrel in them to fight over every ball and are fast both in terms of their rapid acceleration away from packs and on the sprint down the wing, while at the same time maintaining good lateral mobility to allow them to get out of heavy traffic.

Yeah, two or three of those should help our side get itself together. I don't even care if they have good leadership or not.

We should be so lucky as a club! No doubt Hogan has the credentials and the same with Viney.

Get Black to the club as an assistant....should be a priority, however hard grunt and hunger comes from within and not many on our list have much of that.

Dom Sheed is definitely a ball magnet.

Rory Sloane is a ball magnet - but I probably wouldn't give away pick 2 for him.

At the same time, I am not sure I'd cry if we did, whilst giving away such a high pick for Sloane - he is EXACTLY what we need.

Lean towards Sheed.

The only thing with Sloane is that he is a B+ grade player and I am not sure he'll make an A grader.

Both Sheed and Aish could make A graders and I'd argue that it wouldn't take much for Sheed to get there, he is a ball magnet and he looked head and shoulders about any other player in the under 18 championships.

Thankfully though, our recruiters watch these young kids every week - or at least more than us - so we put the faith in them to have it right.

Pretty sure between Jack Viney and Jesse Hogan, we will get the top pick right, those kids would know who is the real deal and who isn't.

Melbourne had a choice Wines (ball magnet ready to play) or Toumpas (outside player) who needs time to develop

Given our current midfiled and ball winning problems Why not pick Wines I really dont think MFc know what they are doing! Still!

You have faith in Trenners Did you watch the game today He either is injured or not good enough What is it? More blind faith?

IF he plays again I will seriously Question the thinking of the footy department

Cost us 3 goals on his own adds absolutely nothing

I understand your frustration but he is clearly playing injured, a stress fracture is something that could potentially be uncomfortable for a long time and I would say it is having an impact but he still is getting over 20 touches a game and had 5 tackles so he is justifying his place at this stage, to say he isn't good enough is making a judgement without a lot of information to really know what's going on with the young man.

I watch with absolute dismay his inability to contest and impact the game Rest him give him a preseason and then we can judge him At the moment he adds absolutly nothing

I thought he has been improving, but then seeing a stress fracture during the pre season and having experienced one myself I can sort of understand the way it could be an issue.

he is still only 22 and was a number 2 pick so plenty of talent :)

someone recruit a Viney 2.0

and trade for a Viney 3.0

than we'll be right

Not good enough for what? And yes, he is injured. He is recovering from a stress fracture in his foot for god's sake!

Jack Viney IS Viney 2.0

What you're looking for is a Viney 3.0 and 4.0

recruit in the draft someone who plays like Viney.

than either trade a player for a pick or pickup a mature aged player from another team who plays like viney.

i'd be willing to give up Sylvia for one of them. (and Sylvia is one of my favourite players)

Jack Viney IS Viney 2.0

What you're looking for is a Viney 3.0 and 4.0

hahaha Very good

touche too that one

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

  • PREGAME: St. Kilda

With just over two weeks until their opening match of the 2026 AFL Premiership season, the Demons are already well on the path to redemption and have the Saints firmly in their sights ahead of their mid-March clash at the MCG. What do you think the team will look like when they run out on to the G?

  • REPORT: Richmond

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.

The Dees ran another clinic for the second week in a row as they easily accounted for the Tigers in the lightning interrupted shortened match at Mars Stadium in Ballarat.

Kozzy Pickett was the man of the match last week and has a vote lead over backup ruck Max Heath who didn't play this week and 5 votes over former Saint Jack Steele. Who gets the votes in this weeks shortened match win over the Tigers? Your votes please. 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 & 1.

It's Game Day and the 2026 AFL Premiership season is almost upon us as the Demons take to the field for their final practice match before the first ball is kicked in anger in 16 days time. What are you expecting to see from the Dees today as they take on the Tigers at Mars Stadium in Ballarat?
