Agree with you except on one point. Gameday belongs to the players. They must take ownership of their performance. The best Neeld can do is keep them on the tracks. They've got to shovel the coal and man the whistle. Do it right and we'll roll right back into the mix.

This is one of those interstate games that I can barely watch as I get expectations up.

The way I look at this team, there are 6 real defenders. Where are the rotations coming from?

I disagree. The players can choose to chase, tackle, apply pressure for 4 quarters, or they can shirk contests and play unaccountable footy. The coach can only do so much.

Are you excusing the players? I don't think you are, just as I'm not excusing the coach. I just think the players at the MFC have escaped blame for too long. For almost fifty years we've put the pressure on the coach, but as we've seen with Geelong whenever a playing group takes true ownership of their performance, great things can follow.

True the coach doesn't actually get a kick BUT it is his responsibility to lead, train and inspire players to a point where they follow a plan, know their roles and are able to adapt to changing circumstances.

I'm not writing this to defend the coach as he is ultimately responsible. But Port actually have some pretty good midfielders at the moment. Boak, Hartlett, Ebert etc would walk into the current MFC lineup. Neeld has so far made tall forwards his priority in the draft & trade period. Although he has brought in midfielders through the draft midfielders have also left & not really been replaced or topped up. It may be his strategy to build the list in this way & have draft picks in mind, I'm not sure. It will probably cost him his job unless some of our existing mids start performing above what they are now.

Why even bother having a coach then if he seemingly bears no responsibility?! It's the coach's job to prepare them to do to all those things and keep them accountable in doing it.

But would you have said the same about Port 5 weeks ago. They were widely tipped to finish 17-18th.

It is Hinkley who has got them believing in their own ability again.

Neeld MUST do the same. It is his fundamental job.

At the end of the day though, no coach has ever kicked a goal after the siren to win a game. No coach has ever laid a tackle to steal victory from the jaws of defeat. All a coach can do is motivate and teach.

The players decided to stop being flakey as they have been for years. No doubt their new coach has played a role in that, but you have to wonder what the impact of a new captain, a new leadership group and a raft of new players and administrators has done to shake up the environment there.

Think it's a bit naive to say the players just decided by themselves to be good all of a sudden, it's no coincidence it's all happened since a new coach came in.
