The way I see it regarding Tippett the answer is yes.

Tippett wanted to leave Adelaide in 2009 when his contract was up but the Crows some how convinced him to stay; so he said but only for 3 years and then you must trade me to where ever I want to go.

Nothing wrong with that; he didn't want to go into the draft and maybe finish up in woop woop land, he wanted a say in where he wanted to go.

Now the best bet for him, in a draft, would be in the National Draft because no club in their right mind would take him as their first draft pick against the choice of the young talent in this years draft; which would make it a certainty that Sydney would pick him up as their 1st pick. They were prepared to trade him for their 1st round pick any way.

But the AFL in their wisdom effectively barred him from participating in the ND.

Irrespective of any involvement in 3rd party deals he was uncontracted and entitled to enter the draft. I understand that the AFL can ban clubs from competing in the draft by means of withdrawing draft picks but I don't think they can bar an out of contract player from entering the draft on the suspicion he might have done some thing wrong.

Tippett to Sydney would make them virtually unbeatable in 2013 and the AFL wants to see the competition up in the air until the last quarter of the Grand Final. That way they can maximise their profits. So Tippett to Sydney is not an option in their eyes.

So has the $$ signs in their eyes caused them to breach their own rules?

Tippett's soly thinks so.

Oh by the way how come Adelaide can participate in the draft but Tippett can't?

Ms Wilson cannot resist the urge to put Melbourne into the mix each time she talks about the Tippett affair. The issues are entirely unrelated.

It's such a long walk from where Ms Wilson's at to intelligent, quality, well written and reasoned journalism. Such a long walk.

As an aside, if Tippett takes an early pick in the ND or pre-season draft from either GC or GWS, obviously that's going to be good for us. It essentially bumps us up a pick.

I do not see the article that way at all RB

She is talking about the three big stories at present, Tippet/ Adelaide, Carlton / Judd/ Visy and the MFC Tanking.

As much as I want the MFC thing to go away it will not until the AFL come down with a finding and it is resolved.

I don't like CW anymore than you but I think that article is a reasonable summery of current events.

Perhaps you're right on this occasion old dee. I just can't stand her, so I now default into loathing every article I read by her. She can't write.

That said, Carlton/Judd and Adelaide/Tippett are IMO the same issue. MFC 'allegedly' tanking is entirely unrelated.

That is the trap, I tend to avoid her articles in total However we have to be careful not to throw the baby out with the bath water.

All journalists write good and bad stories the trick is to work out which label applies.

I actually liked her line about the simple time of the home and away games or something to that effect.

I liked that line, too. But I thought she should have expanded that last paragraph to add ... "Suddenly, the thrilling Sydney-Hawthorn grand final seems but a nostalgic memory, the simplicity of the home-and-away season a romantic dream, and objective, accurate sports reporting a thing of the past."

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
