yes. And i am saying it is much harder to play that same role during Prelims & Grannies.

One of the Swans players said a couple of weeks ago that he had to do some work to show he could be counted on. He did & proved worthy of promotion.

He got called up in a recent game & they were happy with his work.

He was kept in the squad for the finals & Grand Final. Thats strong praise in a side like Sydney.

It's not semantics at all. It's a disagreement about a fundamental aspect of the thread - that he has improved. I don't particularly think he has improved his footy. What I saw on the weekend I've seen from him before. Perhaps he's changed behind the scenes and 1%er aspects of his game that really only those at the club could state. But, really, his marking and goal-kicking are nothing new.

My disagreement also stems around the argument that often comes up about players who "will never be a premiership player." If a player is skilful enough to play AFL and can fill a role in a side, he can be a premiership player in the right side.

I don't think that if Mcglynn had have played, Morton would've. He didn't do the work and get given the spot ahead of Mcglynn, poor Ben got injured. This is not a knock on Morton, this is not showing him any disrespect. He was not Swans best 22 for most of the year and the footy I saw from him when he did come in wasn't much different to what I'd have expected him to do.

Everyone knew Morton had talent. He kicked 41 goals one year at Richmond on the back of 35 the previous year. He had to work hard on the defensive side of his game and finally got an opportunity late in the season.

There's nothing terribly eye-opening. He's finally started to do the things expected of an AFL player at his third club. To get a consistent game at Sydney you must adhere to their non-negotiables. It's been harder to get a game at Melbourne this year too.

Exactly. He said post-match that he got a wakeup call from his teammates mid year. This is his third club and in half way through his 8th season in the system he shows signs that he might finally get it.

Even then, my money is on the wheels falling off sooner or later. I don't have a lot of faith in guys who have shown traits of extreme laziness in the past. For every Steve Johnsons who turns it around permanently there's heaps of Adam Heuskes and Travis Johnstones and Nick Davises who just can't sustain the effort for any longer than a year or two.

Obviously prelims and GFs are tougher than regular season games - but I think essentially all tougher games end up doing is put the magnifying glass on what players do regularly anyway. They just have to be able to it as a natural instinct under greater pressure.

Morton played 3 finals for a combined total of 33 kicks, 15 handballs and 9 marks. He had 15 tackles and kicked four goals. He was reasonably lively and pretty dangerous without being brilliant. Pretty much how I remember him as a W.C./Richmond player.

They just have to be able to it as a natural instinct under greater pressure.

Like the way he made mention of forward defensive pressure was the only thing that was keeping him out of the firsts.

Funny how in today's game if you're a forward and only kick 1 behind but lay 7 tackles in a game the coach is happy enough to play you the following week.

Looking back on our season, I'm contented that Neeld drilled this into the players as a non-negotiable.

There is work to do, no doubt.

Mitch form int he 2nd was great from what i heard, kicking bags or 9 and 10 on more than one occasion. And to those that said he would not have played if player X was playing that is true. But he was chosen ahead of about 20 other blokes for that spot in the GF team. He earned it over the year and fought for a place in the side.

Some people forget grand final sides are not made full of stars. You look at most, have 2/3 great players and a great supporting cast of whom many would be average no different than the other 17 sides in the comp. But they play a role and sometimes have a day out. Its about the team and individual brilliance is the icing on the cake.
