THE CONTRACTS THREAD [with updates]

Featured Replies

Couch is not up to AFL standard. If he is the yard stick in regards to fringe/Casey player then the club should have gone harder for inside midfielders. In racing terms he is a 'plodder' without the pace to get near the front.

Updated.

There are 6 vacancies with Evans and Nicho to come up from what I have heard from more than one source. See if that pans out soon.

If it does we will have 4 vacancies for ND4, ND49, ND53, and ND70/PSD3. ND73 and ND74 are there for more deletions/contract hold outs.

So if we want to use our 3rd pick in the pre-season draft, and still use all our draft picks up to and including ND74, we have to de-list at least 3 more players. Or Rookie list them. Is that correct? Of the players OOC, possibly Macdonald, Davis, and Bartram (if knee is chronic).

rpfc i think your assumption of 40 +6 is wrong

My reading is that it between 38 +6 and 40 + 4. In other words a total of 44 either way

My suspicion is they will go 40 + 4 and opt for more mature-agers from the state leagues rather than 6 rookies

You're right. I changed my numbers accordingly a few weeks ago but forgot to change that sentence. Will do so now.

There are 3 list lodgements - one on Oct 31 where clubs must make enough room for three picks at the ND, one on Nov 15 for clubs that need to make more deletions in case of any Delisted FA signings, and one after the draft and a second DFA period on the Nov 29.

We have space for ND4, ND49, ND53, ND70/PSD3, and the upgrading of two rookies.

I expect that there are still a few question marks over a few players heads as we head toward that second list lodgement. An important fortnight for: Sellar, Jetta, MacDonald, Batram, Bail, Spencer and Davis.

All are still OOC and with PSD3/ND70, ND73, ND74, and possible Delisted FAs looming above them.

I can see them all staying or all the way up to only Spencer and Bail...

We will see, but I have an inkling that we are not done yet...

I'll be surprised if there's any further delists.

I wouldn't be. It may depend on the conditioning of the boys when they return to train, what is available in the delisted FA players I would say.

id be disapointed to see any of Barty, MacDonald or Jetta go.

I think you could find players with Bail's traits in any of the state leagues

Bartram and spencer are the ones IMO who might miss contract renewal.

Barty because of his knee problems if the latest therapy doesn't work.

Pencil to stay only if Gawn doesn't come up.

With Martin gone the next in line for 1st ruck is Spencer and Gawn with no-one behind them.

What about Fitzpatrick?

Provided all can stay healthy, I think our ruck stocks are:

1. Jamar

2. Gawn

3. Spencer

4. Fitzpatrick

I wouldn't be surprised to see Spencer go, although I would delist Davis and Jetta ahead of him.

Gawn is not ahead of Spencer. And Fitz is so slight...

I would be very surprised to see Spencer go. He is the only one ready to go if Jamar is injured. Throwing the other two into the AFL would be unfair on them.

From what I have seen of Gawn (his 4 AFL games), he is a better player than Spencer IMO. I don't think any of Fitz/Gawn/Spencer are good enough to be a #1 ruck yet, so let's pray that Jamar doesn't go down in 2013.

Sylvia UFA next year? Guess that means his about to have his breakout season...

Hey Olisk : Just what are you implyng about our greatest potential star ! Are you suggesting he will deliver on that potential to ensure another contract? Gee if that is so maybe we keep giving him good ie well paid one year contracts to the end of his careeer

Spencer is more equipped to deal with AFL in 2013 than Gawn, who I agree is a better player. I don't think Fitxpatrick will ever be able to hold down 1st ruck with his frame.

Who do you reckon might turn up out of shape and be vulnerable?

Who do we still have that wants out?

Hope not. He's nothing more than a witches hat out on the ground. The change to the ruck rules won't be advantageous to Spencer.

He is a depth plaeyr in 2013 and no more.

I don't care to talk much about depth players. Doesn't mean you don't need them but...

Yes, nice work thanks - and the 4 Rookies to be re-contracted too

It's Bartram btw - he needs Trengroves (sic) often inserted extra r

Hang on, I've lost track.

Is that 6 vacanies, to be filled including those out of contract, or excluding?

Ie, those last 4 have to go, if we are going to use say 3 ND picks and 1 PSD pick?

Or do we have 6 extras to include, even if we recontract all 4 of them?

Gillies added. I have him and Rodan on one year deals - let me know if otherwise.

Down to three vacancies.

I can still see a couple possible delistings, but we will see.

Jetta has not really set the world on fire, he would have to be being considered to be dropped. and macdonald while serviceable could be redundant with Gillies arriving. I would think how they conduct themselves at training in the next week or so will have a big bearing on their future.

  • PREVIEW: North Melbourne

Can you believe it? After a long period of years over which Melbourne has dominated in matches against North Melbourne, the Demons are looking down the barrel at two defeats at the hands of the Kangaroos in the same season. And if that eventuates, it will come hot on the heels of an identical result against the Gold Coast Suns. How have the might fallen? There is a slight difference in that North Melbourne are not yet in the same place as Gold Coast. Like Melbourne, they are currently situated in the lower half of the ladder and though they did achieve a significant upset when the teams met earlier in the season, their subsequent form has been equally unimpressive and inconsistent.

  • REPORT: Adelaide

The atmosphere at the Melbourne Football Club at the beginning of the season was aspirational following an injury-plagued year in 2024. Coach Simon Goodwin had lofty expectations with the return of key players, the anticipated improvement from a maturing group with a few years of experience under their belts, and some exceptional young talent also joining the ranks. All of that went by the wayside as the team failed to click into action early on. It rallied briefly with a new strategy but has fallen again with five more  consecutive defeats.

  • CASEY: Coburg

The Casey Demons returned to their home ground which was once a graveyard for opposing teams but they managed to gift the four points on offer to Coburg with yet another of their trademark displays of inaccuracy in front of goals and some undisciplined football that earned the displeasure of the umpires late in the game. The home team was welcomed by a small crowd at Casey Fields and looked right at home as it dominated the first three quarters and led for all bar the last five minutes of the game. In the end, they came away with nothing, despite winning everywhere but on the scoreboard and the free kick count.

After four weeks on the road the Demons make their long awaited return to the MCG next Sunday to play in a classic late season dead rubber against the North Melbourne Kangaroos. Who comes in and who comes out?

  • POSTGAME: Rd 17 vs Adelaide

The Demons were wasteful early before putting the foot down early in the 2nd quarter but they chased tail for the remainder of the match. They could not get their first use of the footy after half time and when they did poor skills, execution and decision making let them down.
