GW$ vs Swans

Featured Replies

I wouldn't read anything much into this game in terms of scoreline or how competitive the giants were. There were a lot of mitigating factors.

1- Swans played some of the worst football I've ever seen from them.

2- Umpiring was very one-sided. You may have noticed that the Sydney forwards couldn't buy a free. Imagine how the score would have blown out if the frees in marking contests had been payed.

3- The Swans really weren't trying. They were strolling around the field doing training drills for a lot of the night. This of course contributed to point 1.

As for Mohr, I thought he was pretty solid tonight. If I recall, he improved drastically last year. Before that he was never in contention for an AFL spot. He just happened to click at a time when GWS could grab him outside the draft.

The frees were 'interesting' 24 GWS to 16 Syd. Sydney often had obvious frees missed whilst GWS got very iffy ones. Now I'm not saying there was an AFL plot afoot to make GWS look as good as possible (though since footy is now a 'business' it would be a possible though dangerous tactic for the AFL to do that sort of thing). But I'd be interested to hear what the proponents of the argument that "there is no bias, the best team gets more frees" have to make of this match?

The way GWS played would have given us a good fright given our form and attitude post 186 and later.

Watching the Giants this competitive in their first game makes me even more angry about 186.

Was impressed.

Can't wait to see us in round one now.

Caroline Wilson just said on Insiders that, taking out Cornes and McDonald, the rest of the team had an average of 5 AFL games between them. And they were competitive.

In that context, last year's 186 point capitulation is simply outrageous.

Glad we've finally worked out that it was outrageous.

I thought it was obvious that the 186 point loss was an extraordinary event that had nothing to do with the usual reasons for a loss. No AFL side loses by that much no matter how inexperienced or just generally poor it is unless there's something else very wrong,

Good on Junior. We treated him like crap and tonight shows that he still has some value.

Very sad that we pushed him to play for this disgraceful joke of a club.

Sorry Jaded but you are wrong on both points.

We gave Junior the captaincy and 240 odd games and when rising 34 we decided to play younger players like Jordie Mc, Nicholson and Gys etc. Had we have not done that we would have hindered their progress and the team's progress, for a guy with maybe one year left in him at best. Absolutely correct decision to make. We were rebuilding, not a finals side. Junior will not be in their side late in the year IMO.

We also didn't push him to play for GWS. He went there as a Coach and like Cornes, Brogan and Power is playing while he can, to give some grunt and experience on the ground. They are short term players for GWS. Don't hear the Power or Lions supporters upset that they have moved on younger players than Junior was.

Commentary is making me think about buying foxtel.

I was really disappointed that Foxtel were using the channel seven feed, meaning it had the ch7 commentators and the picture was not in HD, as has been advertised. I assume this will be the case whenever 7 is telecasting a game which is really disappointing.

Junior was holding nobody back.

He was loved by all the players and set a wonderful example. He sure would have been a better captain than Green was last year.

I am all for the youth policy, but it amazes me how many ordinary players we've held onto, guys like Bate, Dunn, even Newton FFS, but Junior was not given the right to put an end to his own career. He could have easily gone around again last year, and I bet we would have been better off.

For such a wonderful servant of the club, he was treated appallingly. Dean Bailey admitted as much.

I'm very happy for him that he's managed to get another gig, but it's sad to see him running around in that disgusting jumper. He deserved a better end to his career, and he deserved for it to be at the MFC.

Lets say we gave him another year and he went off happy. At the end of the year Sheedy gives him an assistant coach job. Then like this year he decides to play on for a while to help the young GWS boys. Then all we are arguing about is whether he should have played 2011 with us. I don't think he should have.

We could never have stopped him having a go with GWS, unless maybe we played him until he was 40.

Me too and they had live HD in the little fox box on the screen, I thought my eyes were playing up but it didn't look HD to me. False advertising??

On the game, I thought Sydney were pathetic last night. A few of their players were treating it like a stroll in the park and they came unstuck, percentage went begging.

Why the Channel 7 feed was on Fox has me completely gobsmacked....surely this isnt going to be the case always.

If this is happening all season, there were some very selective press statements.

On the coverage generally- it was incredibly mediocre. i get the feeling this was neither a 7 or Fox thing but more an AFL run campaign.

I got that feeling re an AFL-run campaign.

Richo's interview to Cotchin (live in his living room!?) was just painful to watch.

And how much camera time will Ling's face have this year?

Lack of HD was a real letdown, and could definitely be considered false advertising.

Trust me Ch 7 & Foxtel will employ any practise they can to save $$$...Both have paid massively over what they should have...

HD i am guessing will only be used in September....Check the fine print...it may be deeply hidden.

HD looked good in the NAB cup but it was a let down last night with no HD.

This is from their online campaign, yes it is false advertising isn't it Mr. Bartlett?

"There is not a game during the home-and-away season that FOX FOOTY will not broadcast LIVE, in HD and SD UNINTERRUPTED siren to siren."

Got the SD paid for the HD.

the replay was HD today and had brian taylor and luke darcy commentating.

they did say they would take 7s feed though. which is fair enough - but it needs to be HD. mind you, 7 are bastards and wont film it in HD...

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
