The international rules series is a Mickey mouse competition, and Green was the most experienced and senior player in a very green side, with an AFL club captaincy to lend credence to his leadership abilities, either rightly or wrongly.

I think he was elected captain partly by default, and partly because of how he looked best on paper.

Ease had little time with the players to make a proper judgment.

That's why Neeld still hasn't made a decision on the captaincy, despite having coached the playing group for a lot longer.

Almost all of Brads injuries throughout his career at the Dee's are a direct result of him putting his body on-the-line. I don't believe anyone who has followed Brads time at MFC can say that selfless acts of courage are not part of his game.

Interesting about his appointment in the international rules team given that the likes of James Kelly were other obvious choices. What the selection criteria for that was, who knows?

From a supporters perspective, we watched Brad fail quite miserably in the media and struggled on the field last year. 2011 was a just an outright dog of a year for any player let alone Brad to lead the Demons week in, week out so I defintitely think we need to cut him some slack.

I honestly think that if he were given another go he would flourish under the new coaching regime but I also believe there are other candidates with more potential and the abovementioned traits waiting for the opportunity.

IMO a reappointment of Green as Captain will be viewed as an endorsement for Trengove to take over in 2013 or the latest 2014 (if you think Brad has two more years left in him, which I personally doubt).

Only 3 players played more games than him in 2011 yet he didn't finish in the top 10 in the B&F. In fact, if you extrapolated the average votes given per games played Green would struggle to have made the top 20 in the B&F. For example, Austin Wonaeamirri only played 5 games, but he averaged more votes per game than Green.

I appreciate that many supporters natural inclination is to jump to the defence of club stalwarts, afterall that's probably what good supporters should do, however, I also like a dose of reality occasionally. If ever there was a year a club needed their captain to stand up it was 2011 for the MFC.

What did you want him to do Harley(Geel) did not rate in their B&F but was a leader and a good captain. It's not just about the footy its about leadership and I don't think we, as supporters, realise the time and effort put in

Interesting how the opening post is about the various traits required of a captain and the thread then seems to focus almost entirely on on-field performance. I don't know if Brad Green is a good captain or not. But I do believe that what happens when we don't see or hear about it is important. At training, in the media, stroking the egos of sponsors, helping youngsters understand the total demands of being a professional footballer - all these are important and a captain should have a significant role in all of them. I agree that a captain should be good enough to hold his spot in the team, but he doesn't have to be a star. (Gary Ablett Sr is an excellent example of a star not suited to being a captain).

Who was a better captain? David Neitz? James McDonald? Robbie Flower? Garry Lyon? How could any of us know?

Actions on field makes me think its Brent Moloney, but I was considering Mark Jamar. Cool calm collected, a bit left field but a good if taciturn speaker.

Our best ruck, a terrific forward when down there. Big presence. Not a lot of communicating in the obvious sense. A leader? I think so.
