There's no better way to start the New Year than see what the betting agencies have in store for us. On the basis that I never take things more than one game at a time, I'm content to look no further than round one and I like what I see -

• Greater Western Sydney $10.00 v  Sydney $1.05

• Richmond $4.95 v Carlton $1.17

• Hawthorn $2.05 v Collingwood $1.75

• Melbourne $1.43 v Brisbane $2.80

• Gold Coast $3.65 v Adelaide $1.28

• Fremantle $2.35 v Geelong $1.59

• North Melbourne $2.05  v Essendon $1.75

• Western Bulldogs $2.50 v West Coast $1.52

• Port Adelaide $3.50 v St. Kilda $1.30

I fully expect us to win against Brisbane, just as I'd assume most AFL fans do. If we don't, the media will be all over it. Our team doesn't need that in the first week of the season.

I don't know what it is but I have this feeling that our game against the Lions is going to be slightly overshadowed by Hawthorn v Collingwood and the media is going to be all over that one.

That said, I notice that we're going to have a big influence on the outcome of that game because we meet them both in the NAB Cup. Surely, the odds are out for that competition?

Maybe it's the new year/Xmas spirit, but those are extremely generous odds for GWS.

don't you mean parsimonious, hardtack?

Where'd you find those odds?

I like the 3.50 to make the 8. ....and for the romantics out there a Melbourne V Geelong GF is 151!....a little short as well.

I think Andrew Demetriou is the only one that bet in favour of giants

Yes dc, more appropriate. Scrooge McTote.

surprised north is that much shorter than us...well worth a sneaky tibble methinks at $81

I'd be putting an easy $100 on the Hawks right now!

I've said if Melbourne move out to $5 for the 8 pre-season (possible during the NAB) I'm going to chuck $20 on it.

  • PREVIEW: St. Kilda

It seems like only yesterday that these two sides faced off against each other in the centre of the continent. It was when Melbourne was experiencing a rare period of success with five wins from its previous six matches including victories over both of last year’s grand finalists.  Well, it wasn’t yesterday but it was early last month and it remains etched clearly in the memory. The Saints were going through a slump and the predicted outcome of their encounter at TIO Traeger Park was a virtual no-brainer. A Melbourne victory and another step closer to a possible rise into finals contention. Something that was unthinkable after opening the season with five straight defeats.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.
