1st round pick (straight after 12) Pick 13 - Taylor Adams

mid 1st round pick (after other clubs that missed finals 1st round picks) Pick 19 - Elliot Kavanagh

not bad if u ask me

but with a stronger less compromised draft next year, and depending on where we finish, i reckon we should be in line for some good skillful midfielders to go along with Jack Viney

Next year's draft is so much better in terms of depth and with GWS having a lot less picks.

Plus, having a full year under the new coach will give our recruiting team a better understanding of what we need.

No doubt we did the right thing by holding onto our compo picks for another year. It gives us two first round picks on top of Jack Viney, and if we draft well, it really could extend the length of our window by 2-3 seasons.

We actually would have only received pick 31 (Jackson Merrett) and pick 32 (Joel Hamling) as per the AFL's activation rules (see article).

It was definitely the logical thing to hold onto the picks. If next year is as strong as it sounds then a few clubs will be looking to utilise their compensation picks as well. Perhaps we will see only one of ours used next year and bank the other to use from 2013 - 2015.

I like our Pick 54 from last night...yes a risk...But both Todd & Neil would know him well...Big Boy, who can take a mark & is ready to go now & not in 2 years time.

I think it was more a thought of picks we would get in an uncompromised draft which would be in the teens. but you are right in that we wouldnt get great picks this year obviously, but that isnt an indication of talent available at these picks in the next 4 years.

Bottom 9 picks (there are 18 clubs)

Pick 10 (for 9th place)

Pick 11 (for after 1st round compo)

Pick 12 (for 10th place)

Pick 13 (for mid first round compo - nb 'mid' is 'before finalists')

Of course throw in other teams compo picks and it all slips further

Nup, he's now relying on the RD

I think we will use at leasr one in a trade in the next 2 years.

There would have been merit in using a compo pick this year, from a tactical perspective. Since GWS had a barrel of picks AND needed to build a side, they would have ignored the "best available" mantra and picked on a needs basis, which would have left some talented players in the teens. That Melbourne chose to ignore the chance to pick up a good player who slipped down the order confirms Melbourne thought 2011 was light for talent at the top end.

Mind you, if this year's draft was unpolluted Melbourne, who finished 13th, would have got pick 5. If we finish 13th again next year and there are no distortions we will get a substantially better pick than our (traded) 12th pick this year. Even if we double our ladder pozzy next year we will still get a better pick than this year.

On reflection, using our compo pick this year would have been madness.
