What to expect

Well, it's time to predict the most important thing about draft day. What comments will the clubs, their recruiters and their recruits say?

Will we get the time honoured "I couldn't believe player x was still available when it came to our turn" or perhaps "I couldn't read player x's number out fast enough"?

How about "We drafted for best available"

Or, (a new one, just for this year) "I really had hoped Brendan Fevola would find a new home, but he didn't fit with our plans at this time".

Which top ten draft pick will say, "I wasn't sure if I was going to get picked at all...I'm just glad somebody wanted me". And then there's the simple, but effective "I'm stoked".

i find this the most exciting thing about draft day.

Oops, almost forgot my favourite "We expect player x to be a 200+ game player for us"

I expect that Travis Tuck & Aaron Hall will not be picked up tonight in the National draft.

Michael Newton will beat Patton for #1 pick.

I expect Freo to select recycled players, continuing the Ross Lyon theme. Very pleased he is over there and not with us.

"words can't describe how happy i am to be drafted by this club" newly drafted player

We can expect a few glum faces when their name is called by GWS followed by "I am looking forward to playing AFL and my dad is really looking forward to his new job as a recruiter for Carlton"

I hear Ox on SEN tonight saying that GW$ get 18 out of the first 14 picks; 14 players and 4 fathers.

Tonight we will see a club, already built on lies and deception, rape the draft. In two years we will see just how many of the players they pick want to stay and how many would rather play for a club that has honour and integrity.

Who knows, some of the kids playing up there may be the first to witness flares being fired at an AFL game.

And I forgot the obvious "He gets his own ball"

Hey, it's better than drafting players who enjoy grabbing other people's balls.

Hey, it's better than drafting players who enjoy grabbing other people's balls.

Would be even worse if they're "hard at it".

Forget the haunting of Round 11 — we’ve got this. Melbourne returns to its inner-city fortress for its milestone 100th AFLW match, carrying a formidable 10–2 record at IKON Stadium. Brisbane’s record at the venue is more balanced: 4 wins, 4 losses and a draw.

It’s been a season of grit, growth, and glimpses of brilliance—mixed with a few tough interstate lessons. Now, with finals looming, the Dees head to Kardinia Park for one last tune-up before the real stuff begins.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
