JR is just a player in my opinion .Big surprise to me that he was 2nd in the BT medal .All said here must be true-it's how I see him .3rd man up ,loses his man sometime yet creates .Great spoiler but not big enough for the top forwards.Loose man in defence blah , blah , blah.

I will admit I am not a fan, and didn't enjoy much about his 2010 at all, finding myself screaming his name at the tele on the regular. This year, he has taken a massive step forward. His spoils in defence were sublime, saving us from a world of hurt with ease of regularity. But this is where the love affair ends. When he is in offence, I cringe. As a leader he offers little. I am absolutely willing to give him a massive improvement tick from last year, but for my point of view, I cannot give him 2nd over Jones, Martin, McKenzie or Trenners. All of this is pointless though, as my opinion counts for nought, but it is my opinion and it won't change.

The knock on Jarrod is that he is mostly terrible as a one on one player. When playing the nick maxwell third man up spoiling role he generally excels.

Agree with all but the first and last statements. Another who needs to lift? I think Jared is one of the few players on our list who is presently playing close to their maximum potential. We know he's a limited athlete (lacking speed and size for his position) but he's a courageous and smart footballer who, in my opinion, is getting the best out of himself.

The umpires for all our games might need to 'fess up too.

B&F and Brownlow voting criteria are miles apart. For a start, B&F concerns one club only. And it doesn't end there....

Seven 3-and-under-year players got votes (one came 3rd for club). Two of his line team-mates got votes. The captain got a vote. Moloney got 19.

What it says is that Rivers plays a role for our team that is directly under the instruction of the coaches.

Because he plays the role that he's asked, the way that he's asked and gets the results that are asked of him, the coaches reward his good team role with votes in the club best and fairest.

The coaches know what role he was asked to play and thought he performed that role exactly the way he was asked.

In the Brownlow the umpires have no idea what role a player is asked to play. So they give the votes to the player who they notice the most. Generally it isn't the contest killing tall defender.

Guess how many votes 2011 All Australian defender Darren Glass got? Between the three key defenders in the 2011 All Australian team (Glass, Reid, Scarlett) they got 4 votes. Glass had zero, Reid had one (for a 31 disposal effort against Hawthorn) and Scarlett three (one three vote game after 29 disposals against Hawthorn).

People think the same for Silvagni, Fletcher and Scarlett.

Umpires have a history of voting who they see more of during a game. As AOB states, they don't seem to notice the defenders who kill contests.

Fwiw, I did votes throughout the year on what I thought and I only predicted that Rivers get three - that was from one game. I was surprised he didn't get any from that game, but given the Brownlow's history of umpires of overlooking performances, I shouldn't have been.

From that game the vote getters were 3-McKenzie, 2-Gysberts, 1-Trengove who were all named in the best along with Rivers. All midfielders. That was our Friday night game against the Bombers. (Mine were 3-Rivers, 2-McKenzie, 1-Martin)

Ask Greg williams who once got 44 possessions in a game and not one vote. It's no wonder the umpires are often referred to as blind maggots.
