This is why I disagree with paying the future of the MFC to a bloke like Malthouse.

We are very similar to Brisbane when he took over.

He took over Brisbane after about 5 years on the sidelines.

Currently he is refreshed, relaxed and well informed about the current game style. He is one of the greatest players of all time, one of the geatest coaches of all time, he is hard, tough, and wise. He is a winner!

He will turn players like Sylvia into champions.

He is our man. If he wants the job, we should look no further.

He is the one.

I would rather have a coach 'Bailey' and a captain Judd, rather than a coach Malthouse with the status quo. Spend the money on the people who execute the game on the day.

I like the idea of lethal with Neeld or similar, maybe with Lethal as the football director or something.

As for the age bull, I dont see Sir Alex losing his touch.

What we need is some fresh non Melbourne blood that will tell it like it is.

As i said elsewhere on this forum any elite footy director from any code who knows how to build an elite team would be fine by me.

It's not either or, it's both. We're gonna be spending 100% of the salary cap when we're contending - you can't spend more than that. Money we "save" on a coach can't be spent on players.

I don't particularly like him - "rapist", "cheat" and his self-serving TFS performance - but I don't have to like him.

Agree with that Old, and the record probably shows that the list of successful coaches is not overly populated by the well-balanced and fully sane. An interesting thing about Malthouse is that he does seem to inspire strong loyalty from his troops, while still demanding fierce commitment from them (ie, he doesn't run an old chum's social club). Apart from other things that Malthouse would bring, we really need that.

Not only that, but Jack Watts did a fantastic job of buttering him up during his interview with Lethal by:

* The mo - mon dieu!!

* Having Lethal's playing stats & acheivements at his fingertips;

* Taking him into his confidence that he's only just learning to use his strength, because in his junior career he never had to learn to use his strength to advantage. This was giving away a fair amount of information, but a great way of defusing any tension there might have been between them by the "you didn't know this about me at the time, so it's all OK" approach. Lethal did the right thing in return by saying that he could see now why Jack was No.1 pick.

I thought at the time that Jack must have been under instructions to go all out to lure him to the club. Can't remember seeing an ex-champion being so blatantly worshipped by a likely future champion, but he managed to make it work (and to avoid coming across as too sycophantic)by the "tongue-in-cheek" device of the mo. It was a great performance, and must have been very carefully thought out.

And wasn't Matthews mentoring Bailey for a while? So he'd have good knowledge of the list, and he'd probably be aware of what to watch out for behind the scenes, tho' he'd probably deal with them very differently from Bailey.

Not only is he not the best strategist or tactician, he has been out of the game for way too long.

I can't imagine the damage we'd do by hiring him.

A chance to coach in the big time would surely change his tune!

HoweverI don't think a first timer is not the answer for where we are at currently. We need to go hard at Malthouse, Clarkson, or someone with premiership experience and commands respect from the playing group. Reset all the players thinking and get them all trying to earn there spots again.

This time we don't have four years to hope we got it right!

Whether the CEO oversees anything or not I don't see how he got into the argument. I accept what you say about spending the salary cap.

I still want a Judd more than I want a Malthouse. Our problems are largely on the field. So how do we justify massive increases in off-field spending for a coach, especially a Collingwood one?

My preferences:

The only senior coach I'm interested in is Malthouse. It may be doubtful that he'll be available, but if he has interest it's a no brainer to appoint him.

Clarkson* will stay at Hawthorn. I don't want Eade, or Choco. Matthews won't and he's now a relic of the past. Roos won't. Laidley has had his crack, so I'd say no. He's tactically very good, but there's a flaw in his personality. It really just leaves Malthouse, but he's probably a long shot.

I know that many at the club think we need an experienced coach, but if there's not the right one don't try and make a round peg fit a square hole.

If we can't get Malthouse the untried coach I'd like us to pursue is Brendan McCartney. I've been interested in his career for a while. His coaching credentials are impeccable. He was Mark Thompson's right hand man during his entire reign at Geelong. In a very short time James Hird has said that he's the most impressive coach he's seen in football - extraordinary praise. Tom Harley speaks glowingly of him. He looked after the defence at the Cats before over-seeing a midfield that produced two Brownlow Medallists. His mantra is to have an uncompromising attitude towards contested footy. If you can't win contested footy you won't play in his team. But he also has an amazing ability to develop relationships with his players, while being honest about their footy. He sounds a great coach if a club has the balls to appoint someone who doesn't have an AFL playing career behind them.

He sounds Sensational as a Specialist Support Coach. I'd love that approach at Melbourne & would like to think we could find a Sponsor for such a person, so we could get his attitude skills to our Club.

Lets try to get Lethal, either as a long term Coach,,, or a short term Coach, long term Coaching Director. Either, just get him. Ps: We need to get a Top Leader to take over from Jimma who has to be Our Patron.

If it's inexperience we need then there are plenty of options .Matthews or Clarkson are the only one that have what we need .
