The mid to late 60s was a great era for Australian groups. Bobby & Laurie, The Twilights, Ray Brown & the Whispers, MPD Ltd., Billy Thorp & the Aztecs, the Eazybeats ....... loved 'em all. You were nobody if you didn't go to a disco on Saturday night. No night footy back then, of course.

    The mid to late 60s was a great era for Australian groups. Bobby & Laurie, The Twilights, Ray Brown & the Whispers, MPD Ltd., Billy Thorp & the Aztecs, the Eazybeats ....... loved 'em all. You were nobody if you didn't go to a disco on Saturday night. No night footy back then, of course.

    Every game was on saturday afternoon, including windy hill, fitzroy, Arden street, the lake oval, footscray, hawthorn, Collingwood at collingwood and I think Richmond moved to the MCG in 65.

    And if my memory is correct they used to televise the last quarter of games live.

    And that is not to forget the night GF series played at South Melbourne, if they kicked the ball too high it went out of site.

    I seem to remember the Dees winning a couple of those.

    I can handle not going to most of those old grounds, so somethings do improve over time.

    Saw Bobby Bright perform in Williamstown just a few years back - still a great entertainer, had the crowd in the palm of his hand. Top bloke too.

    Not to mention The Loved Ones (arguably the best band this country ever produced), Mike Furber and the Bowery Boys, Little Gulliver, The Wild Cherries, Johnny Young, Bee Gees (Spics and Specs era). The Purple Hearts, The Valentines (Bon Scott's first band I believe), The Mixtures and on it goes. Discos like Thumping Tum, Box Hill and Ringwood Town Halls (fight night at the disco) etc etc.

The leading acts of this period include Little Pattie, Billy Thorpe & the Aztecs, beat duo Bobby & Laurie (Australia's first "long-haired" performers), the Easybeats,Ray Brown & The Whispers, Tony Worsley & The Fabulous Blue Jays, the Twilights, the Loved Ones, the Masters Apprentices, MPD Ltd, Mike Furber & The Bowery Boys, Ray Columbus & The Invaders, Max Merritt, Dinah Lee, Australia's most popular male singer Normie Rowe, The Groop, the Groove, Lynne Randell (who toured America with the Monkees and Jimi Hendrix), Johnny Young, John Farnham, Doug Parkinson, Russell Morris and Ronnie Burns. Also of note were cult acts such as the Missing Links, the Purple Hearts, The Wild Cherries, The Creatures and the Throb, who had only limited success at the time but whose 'heavier' sound would exert a significant influence on later bands like The Saints.

    1964 was the year of the century. We lived two blocks from the MCG on Powlett St and the weather girl from Channel 9 boarded upstairs. Graham Kennedy was an occasional visitor to the house. And the other Chinese student boarder used to keep live lobsters in the bathtub. Plus we had fire crackers to play with and a premiership. Life was never the same after 64.

    Great stuff, Yep i always remember Rita's smile, even after all this time..Ch 9 was a fantastic place to work back then...Geez we all worked hard, but the rewards were good...we were killing the ratings!!

    While reading Demonland tonight I have heard Bee Gees - Love You Inside and Out, Doobie Brothers - Listen to the Music , Dont Speak French - Girls Aloud ( love that clip) and now Crabby Appleton - Go Back. I have varied taste and love a lot of music styles. Hate rap.

      Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.

      It’s game day and the Demons are chasing a fourth straight win as we take on the high flying Hawks at the G. After decades of being tormented by the Hawks the Dees will be keen to extend their 7 year dominance over Hawthorn.

      Round 9 kicks off out west with the Dockers hosting a Collingwood side resting several stars. Fremantle need to make a statement on their home deck after some disappointing form on the road, while the Magpies will be keen to maintain their Top 2 position. Friday night sees a must-win clash between two sides desperate to stay in touch with the eight. St Kilda have shown glimpses while Carlton are clinging to relevance after a flat start to the season. Saturday’s twilight game at Marvel pits the Bombers against a struggling Sydney outfit. Essendon can’t afford another close match against a lower-ranked side, while the Swans risk sliding down the ladder even further. Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack. Sunday begins with a yawn fest between Richmond and West Coast. The Tigers need to bank the points to stay clear of the bottom two, while the Eagles are still chasing their first win of the year. The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats. With GWS at risk of a third straight loss, Geelong will be eager to consolidate their position inside the eight and start their climb up the ladder. The round wraps up with the top-of-the-table Lions heading to Ninja Stadium to take on the second-last Roos.
