How the hell did the shooters and fishers party get three spots in the upper house? This preference system for the legislative council is a joke.

The problem is the "vote above the line system", which means parties can do preference deals that end up with results like this. The solution is to vote below the line (like I do all the time), to make sure that my vote represents my preferences, not some backroom party dealer. If that means I have to number 87 boxes consecutively, then so what? If I don't take my vote seriously, then nobody else will.

One welcome feature of this Victorian election is that you only had to fill in at least 5 boxes below the line in order to record a formal vote, rather than the full 37 or whatever if was. If everyone did this (ie only recorded 5 preferences) then the problem goes away.

What you say is true R and BB, but after waiting in line for about an hour on a warmish day, a lot of people are fed up, no longer care and do what's easiest, which is put a 1 above the line and get out of there. Not sure how it can be changed, but the system should work regardless of voting above or below. The problem being that someone can win with only a few % of the primary vote. And I see today that the so-called 'preference whisperer' has himself just claimed a legislative council spot. What a joke.

The sex party went dismally

Surprising really but we couldn't win over the boring Bible Belt around Burwood.

We need a man with Age and verve for the next one.

There are plent of you here with the first one covered.

That is the point about the 5 votes. The small parties rely on the fact that every vote above the line has to put all candidates in some order. If they can be everybody's second choice, then they get votes from all sorts of people who wouldn't otherwise consider them. If everyone only put 5 votes below the line, the preference whisperer and all the others wouldn't have a leg to stand on.

The simplest fix is to abolish voting above the line, but I doubt that will happen. The next best things to vote for only 5 below the line.

I understand what you say about the process, but complaining about having to vote is like complaining about growing old; stop whingeing, because not everyone gets the chance.
