Every week after a loss there is criticism on our coach for whatever reason. It seems that some people can't accept that sometimes one team is just simply better than another. I think there is obvious improvement with most players on our list and this is greatly to do with Dean Bailey. As a whole we may not have come along as quickly as people had hoped but we can obviously see that our young players are improving every week.

Whats your thoughts?

Posted

I can see some improvement but I think he will get the sack at the end of the year. Problem is, for whatever reason, he doesn't seem to get the best out of the players.

The real question is; do we blame the coach or the players for our lack of development and/or poor performances? It is much more palatable for the supported to blame the coach (easy fix) rather than the players (a much harder problem to address).

This poll is about half a season too early.

Also in my opinion your poll is biased with 75% of the avaliable options having a negative connotation attached to it and the only option that is positive appears to be sarcastic in nature anyway. I know that your OP says otherwise, but by the creation of the poll in this manner it ppears that it is contrived in such a way but to be pre-disposed to only one real avaliable outcome which is to 'bag' Bailey.

Unfair poll IMO.

I actually thought the poll was divided 50/50 but i can see how it can be seen otherwise.

The second option is written as though it would be better served as the middle of a five-point scale.

Improvement from players, what does that mean?

Players imrove by just playing more games, I'm not saying that coaches don't have a large part to do with it but Bailey shouldn't be judged mainly on player development. It should be on game plan development. This is where the decision over his coaching career should be made. And I'm not of the veiw that we have no game plan and that Bailey is a moron. I instead think we have a credible game plan that gets let down by players poor decision making and significant amounts of skill errors. Both these things will come over time, when it gets drilled into them.

But please don't base your criteria for re-signing him on just player development, rather mainly on the game style we are playing and trying to develop

These blokes are old enough to win the loose ball. They are old enough to fight, they know how to win. They can play.

So we do we frequently look pathetic.

Maybe it is Bailey who lets them get away with it. Maybe he can't coach. Remember Terry Wallace. He had 5 years.

Collingwood is a very young side aswell. You don't see them talking about patience. They just wanna win.

Excellent development coach. So far according to the original poster he would have a 75% approval rating.

IMHO this poll might highlight the clubs inability to manage some supporters expectations. Small minority of vocal "supporters" are calling for the coaches head without factoring in our recent draft & trading strategy.

Now the key point with draft & trading strategies in current times ... are ... much of the flexibility is out of your control especially with the introduction of two new teams ie GC17 & GWS. Your ability to control the pace & make desired changes is vastly restricted.

IMHO Bailey has made the best of a very difficult environment. He has put the long-term interests of the club well above his own and receives no credit for it. However, that's football.

The bolded players have been injured for long periods or have fallen out of form or favour this year.

Maybe this is why we didn't compete at all well.

I know what most people here think of Kevin Bartlett but this morning he was modified in his comments which were (and I did come in at the tail end) that he hoped that the Melbourne Board were aware when measureing the year the Club has had and the way Bailey has handled the year that they take into account:

injuries, development of younger players and other issues behind the scenes that normal supporters were not aware of and keep in mind that Geelong after 7 years under the same coach seemed to outsiders not to be going anywhere. Instead they kept the faith despite calls for the sacking of Thompson and the end result came. He obviously believes that Bailey should be retained. At the moment I am sitting on the fence but I want to see improvement in the way they play as a "team" not just Scully and others and individual development. With so many younger players with so little game time I think it is reasonable to wait until the end of the year before deciding Bailey's fate.

The poll questions are so biased that the result has already written itself.

Nearly all those players were available against Hawthorn, West Coast, North Melbourne

2 top 4 aspirants, which we are certainly not even close to being.

So, North is all you've got? One slip up from a young inconsistent team?

Weak effort.

Bailey has been very, very good for us. He may not ultimately take us to a flag, but I hope he does.

If we get another head coach in due course, I hope the club retains him in some capacity, perhaps as a development coach.

Availability is one thing to look at when discussing our senior players.

Form is another.

And are they good enough?

Because if they aren't good enough to command a spot in the 21, well they are not going to have much of an effect, are they?

Posted

Where did West Coast finish last year?

How old were the Hawks when they won a premiership in 08.

North Melbourne smashed us for heavens sake.

How on earth can you possibly defend this?

Supporters like you are the reason why the MFC is widely regarded as a soft club. It is the mentality of mediocrity that permiates thru supporters and then the board, then the coaching staff, then the players. Weak as [censored].

Spot on, average losing margin this year is 49 points not good enough.

I'll give him 98 out of 100 for getting us to where we are with the list at this point and wherewe are on the ladder right Now, ontrack but hot & cold form.

I've knocked off 2% for the early 2000's Bruise Free footy, that he hasn't knocked out of them yet!

You honestly thought it was 50/50...in what universe is that poll 50/50

Your first choice sees us winning the flag this year, your second, third and fourth choice means the respondent is not happy with Bailey.

That is the most biased poll I have ever seen on D'land.

Because I see this as decision time based on 4 years of Dean my decision is not based on weekly (should it be weakly) results. I believe the basic game plan is mission. Dean is not able to get the results or general improvement I believe is possible. If players aren't learning it is because he is not communicating effectively enough with this group. Unfortunately you can not replace the whole team, so Bailey most go as not being quite good enough for what a premiership team needs

i recon the next 4 weeks may make or break Baileys chance of coaching on.

The next four are all winnable with 2 at the G, this coming week against Freo an interstate side.

Richmond who are around the same development stage as us.

The dogs at Etihad is an interesting one, Eade saying finals chances are over he may look to play more youth and i

will be hoping to see a win at Etihad!!

Then Port Adelaide which should speak for its self.

A big month ahead for Bails and the boys.

no need to make a decision until season end - thats 11 more games

at the moment IMO he is behind the eight ball but a lot can happen in 11 games

Yes, but it becomes unsalvabeable if we don't get something out of the next month. Bailey would want to see at least three solid efforts in this next month against middling sides.

Collingwood is a very young side aswell. You don't see them talking about patience. They just wanna win.

A bit of revisionism going on there. They have 6 players with more than/around 200 games, and almost no players in their 22 with less than 40.

On Monday we had 11 players (half the team) with less than 40 games, the majority of them with less than/around 20 games and one solitary player with more than 200 games.

Comparing us to Collingwood is just ridiculous, they're years ahead of us in experience and development. If you want to start comparing us to clubs, look at Gold Coast, they're closer to our age group/spread.

Yeah sure Collingwood are years ahead of us in development and experience but they still had five players on Monday who had played less than 40 games and another 3 who had played less than 50 games. Over half the Collingwood team from Monday had played less than 80 games.

probably true but I decided a while ago to let him have the full season to put his case

as someone else said then there is the second issue - who?
