I used to be sick, but I think I'm better now...

You can blame this post on the AFL and the Bye... For wont of anything better to do, I was looking through my old LP record collection (vinyl, not those new fangled CD things) and came across the following gem:

Footy Favourites (VFL Approved) on the Studio One label - there's no year on it, but I vaguely recall it being gifted to me in 1977.

Side 1:

1. Tim Watson - Ruby (don't take your love to town)

2. Trevor Barker - I Can See Clearly Now

3. Ray Shaw - Danny Boy

4. Wayne Schimmelbusch - 20 Miles

5. Barry Round - Little Jeannie

6. David Cloke - The Letter

Side 2:

1. Michael Turner - I Go to Rio

2. Laurie Serafini - Hard Rock Cafe

3. Mark Maclure - Imagine

4. Michael Moncrieff - Don't Stand So Close to Me

5. Robert Flower - Macho Man

6. Kevin Templeton - Who's Sorry Now

I really don't think it was an accident to finish this album with Templeton's rendition of "Who's Sorry Now" by the way.

For just a fleeting moment I felt like Indiana Jones as he held the Holy Grail in his hands in Raiders 3.

I still have the vinyl of Mike Bradys "songs of footballs greatest sons."

It was my first ever record, and I reckon I could still sing along to every song. Classic stuff.

That is pure Gold...i would love to hear that once...just once. Side 2 Track 6...says it all really doesn't it!!

I've been waiting for this topic to open up.

I have the "C'Mon Demons!" 12 inch single with " The Demon Dance" as side b.

Words and music by Chris Connolly and Peter Sullivan. Produced by Jim Stynes and Chris Connolly.

It's a classic. Hysterically funny.

Hmm... there was a B-side to a set of footy songs my brother used to have, and one of the songs is permanently entrenched in my brain despite not really hearing it all that often.

Can anyone help me out with the details of the song, possible titled (informatively) 'Football song', that includes the lines

"It's cold it's pouring and your team's behind

(Something about still seeing your face in the crowd)

Cos it's football season, and that's the reason

It's the time of the year that we love"

Nice!! Old enough to have a record made of vinyl yet tech savy enough to be able to use the Internets! Love it.

Of course the album and track list need to be updated to be relevant for today. Here's my take:

Side 1:

1. Liam Jurrah - Given to Fly - Pearl Jam

2. Colin Sylvia - Your so Vain - Carly Simon

3. Tom Scully - Please don't go - KWS

4. Brent Moloney - Party all night - Sean Kingston

5. Jamie Bennell - Part time lover - Stevie Wonder

6. Jack Watts - Question Existing - Rihanna

Side 2:

1. Mathew Warnock - How to Disappear Completely - Radiohead

2. James Frawley - Solid as a Rock - Sizzla

3. Rohan Bail - Run - Snow Patrol

4. Luke Tapscott - I feel the Earth Move - Martika

5. Jordie McKenzie - Closer - Nine Inch Nails

6. Michael Newton - Nothingman - Pearl Jam

**Bonus track- Jim Stynes - MFC - Pearl Jam**

Speaking of 80's classics how about this cracker?

Note the irony of Gerard Healy singing the line about how great Melbourne is about 15 minutes before he did a runner to Sydney for bags of cash.

And while we're at it the greatest song of all time

BM... I notice you were posting at 1:29am. Did you happen to fall asleep at the keyboard before you could get your response out? :)

Oh and Supermercado, I would argue that the greatest releases by a VFL player past or present (well, in the latter case, AFL), were these gems by one Mark "Jacko" Jackson:

Steady on you young whippersnapper! I've been on this internetable world wide thingy since you were probably still in nappies :)

Like your list by the way... maybe I will try to create something similar after they finish changing my bed linen and incontinence pad

(However, you will notice above, I couldn't get the embedded youtube code to work so it displays in this thread... can manage it on Demonology but not here... anyone have some tips?)

You've heard nothing until you've heard his even more unsuccessful third single...

It would have been much more appropriate for Michael Turner to have recorded "How Much is that Doggie in the Window".

Yep, got this. It's called "The Football Song" and was the common B Side to all the classic Fable club theme song singles of the 60s and early 70s. As with all the theme songs it was performed by "The Fable Singers" and arranged in a very similar style with banjo and a big brass section.

Here we go:

When the football season comes around again

and the fans are swarming to the grounds again

there's a kind of fever

that keeps us on our toes

hear the fans a-roaring

as the whistle blows

Though it's boring

and your team's behind

still you never throw in the glove (sic!)

'cos it's football season

and that's the reason

it's the time of the year that we love.

Then the reprise has a really funky pre-chorus riff:

Grab your coat and your rug

and your thermos and mug

let it rain let it shine

though your team isn't fine

it's the football season

and that's the reason

it's the tiiiiimme of the yeeeeeaarrr that we looooooooovvvvve

Wow this is taking me back.....I just went and looked at my cheer squad patches from 74,75, 76.....me and my brother made the run throughs quite a few times and proudly took them on the Red Rattler to the ground forcing several train travellers to help get them in and out....

4. Luke Tapscott - I feel the Earth Move - Martika

5. Jordie McKenzie - Closer - Nine Inch Nails

Slight concern about the Jordie choice SB.

also, I hate to be a stickler but I feel the earth move was the great Carole King. Martika just ripped her off. (But she was pretty hot)

For this year’s Easter Saturday game at the MCG, Simon Goodwin and his Demons wound the clock back a few years to wipe out the horrible memories of last season’s twin thrashings at the hands of the Dockers. And it was about time! Melbourne’s indomitable skipper Max Gawn put in a mammoth performance in shutting out his immediate opponent Sean Darcy in the ruck and around the ground and was a colossus at the end when the game was there to be won or lost. It was won by 16.11.107 to 14.13.97. There was the battery-charged Easter Bunny in Kysaiah Pickett running anyone wearing purple ragged, whether at midfield stoppages or around the big sticks. He finish with a five goal haul.

  • CASEY: UWS Giants

The Casey Demons took on an undefeated UWS Giants outfit at their own home ground on a beautiful autumn day but found themselves completely out of their depth going down by 53 points against a well-drilled and fair superior combination. Despite having 15 AFL listed players at their disposal - far more than in their earlier matches this season - the Demons were never really in the game and suffered their second defeat in a row after their bright start to the season when they drew with the Kangaroos, beat the Suns and matched the Cats for most of the day on their own dung heap at Corio Bay. The Giants were a different proposition altogether. They had a very slight wind advantage in the opening quarter but were too quick off the mark for the Demons, tearing the game apart by the half way mark of the term when they kicked the first five goals with clean and direct football.
