Melbourne injury list

Robert Campbell (achilles) - 6-8 weeks

Troy Davis (thyroid disorder) - ongoing

Jack Fitzpatrick (foot) - 3 weeks

James Frawley (shoulder) - 3-4 weeks

Jordie McKenzie (groin) - 3-4 weeks

Tom McNamara (foot) - 3 weeks

Cale Morton (hand) - 4 weeks

Michael Newton (hand) - 1 week

Jack Trengove (ankle) - 1 week

The current injury list as of today. A bit of a concern that Chip is still 3-4 weeks away and Morton 4. I guess they may be being conservative and plan to bring them back after the bye but both have been 3-4 weeks for about 3-4 weeks. Similar situation for both Jordie McKenzie and Robert Campbell (ie weeks out staying static). Surely they can't be so far off with their initial prediction for all of them? Players can always have set backs in their rehab but surely at least one of the four would have made some progress. Only Newton seems to have made any progress of the senior players who have been out for a while. It makes me suspicious of their prediction of 1 week for Trengove.

How we report our injuries and the accuracy of the time out has been a frustration of mine for the last 2-3 years (i can't be more specific with the timeframe - just kidding). It seems club policy to be fuzzy with expected length out and even diagnosis. Do others share this frustration or am i being unfair on the club?

Beyond using them as a high level guide, I largely ignore the numbers on these. They're vague and inaccurate by nature - even the experts coming up with the real numbers are just having an educated guess ( and whether those are the ones published or not is another matter). You can't possibly hold the club to the numbers published.

I'd read it like this:

Melbourne injury list

Robert Campbell (achilles) - Medium term injury, progressingly slowly. Early-mid season return.

Troy Davis (thyroid disorder) - No idea - will be solved when it is solved.

Jack Fitzpatrick (foot) - Medium term injury, good progress. Early season return.

James Frawley (shoulder) - Medium term injury, good progress. Early season return.

Jordie McKenzie (groin) - Medium term injury, good progress. Early season return. Being cautious.

Tom McNamara (foot) - Medium term injury, good progress. Early season return.

Cale Morton (hand) - Medium term injury, good progress. Early season return.

Michael Newton (hand) - Short term injury, recovering well. Ready soon.

Jack Trengove (ankle) - Very short term injury - might need a week, should be right.

Fair call. You're right you can't hold them to the numbers but still i would like to be pretty confident if they say 6-7 weeks then it will be 'round that mark. Other clubs seem to be able to more accurate and with most injuries there are precedents they can draw on.

Of the various injury sites this is my favourite: http://www.injuryupdate.com.au/afl.php as it gives a good description of the injury and even though it relies on the clubs relasing their injury list once they do it gives a generally very accurate time frame for return.

I hope they update more often during the regular season, hasn't been changed since 11/02!

Yeah i saw that - and they had Frawley listed then as indefinite which is interesting (although predicted return early April - seems a potentially bad injury according to the info link). During the season the lists are updated weekly.

To tear a muscle off the bone, especially for him, our Big defender. The 'Pec', IMO we shouldn'r rush him, or he could injure it again in a wrestle as they test him out. No rush.

It looks like we will have a few coming back in 3 to 4 weeks, Rnd 3... that gives us and Maric & Jetta, Newton, & Bail, 3 weeks to showcase a few tricks. This is a good opportunity for the clubs list to show good form.

Petterd was sensational last year before his shoulder - is he going to be back and in form?

Watched him closely V's Brisbane, hands looked good. It all depends on the manner of the delivery, but he still seemed able to win the one on one marking contests consistently.

We'll find out in 9 days!

Glad your here to sift through the vagueness around.

Seems at least you know more about Trengove than the comments from last week that 'he is just being rested to give others needed game time'.

Just like everyone else around here I can only use logic to make conclusions (read: guess) based on the information I'm given, which is usually stuff all. Based on that, I might sometimes be wrong. Funny that. At least I actually try to apply logic to my conclusions unlike many.

The OP was complaining that the numbers never seem to completely line up from week to week - I was giving a possible alternate way of interpreting the lists. The smartarse replies are unnecessary and unappreciated.

Nasher i think you're way of interpreting the injury list is a good way to look at it, in terms of time out etc

As well as raising the issue of accuracy of weeks out i also flagged the issue of fuzzy diagnosis. Can i also add a concern about what a times appears disengenuous ,or at the very least not fully transparent, informtion about injuries. Generally the club has been good in the last couple of years with info to memebers but not in this regard.

The tregove injury is actually a good example. Didn't the club say he was being rested in Tassie and against the lions? When did he do his ankle? of course it could have been done at training after that but wouldn't they normally say?

I'm no good at remembering specific examples but it seems to be there have been quite a few similar mysterious injuries since Bailey has been on board as well other injuries that never seem to heal or somehow morph into something else. We also seem to have an inordinate number of "general soreness" late withdrwals.

I'm not espousing some strange conspirancy theory but i find it perplexing. I mean the medical and sport science teams in the AFL are at the top of their respective professions and accurate info should not be beyond them (even if legible handwriting probably is - perhaps that's the issue, 3 and 8 look so similar)

Wasn't really intending to be a smartarse. Your comments, namely around Trengove in the example I spoke of seems to indicate a bit more than a guess. Jack Trengove (ankle) - Very short term injury - might need a week, should be right.

Especially so that there is an article advising that he is 50/50 for Round 1.

Being that he missed last week and that round 1 is still 9 days away my 'guess' is that its more than just 'might need a week, should be right'.

My last comment was to highlight from what many here seem to dismiss as a non issue last week and that he was likely 'being rested to allow others more game time'. Nothing to do with being dismissive or smart.

As far as injuries are concerned, footballers fall into 3 categories.

1. Always injured

2. Occasionally injured

3. Never injured

R. Campbell, category 1.

The following quote is from Brad Green in the MFC site, in relation to Chip and Morton:

"James has been told he can play round two, so at least neither of them are going to miss huge chunks of the season, and that's great," Green said.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
