Sheehan's Top 50

Green (31), Davey (47), Frawley (49) ... with a special mention for Grimes as one who was unlucky to miss.

Always an interesting exercise. As usual some strange choices by Mike.

When will this love affair with Dale Morris end? No Jamar? And no way Shaun Higgins has done enough yet to justify a ranking of 30.

LOL. Next time please tell us what you really think.

I do agree to the extent that Mike is irrelevant now.

Dale Morris? No Jamar? Shaun Higgins has not done enough yet to justify a ranking of 30.

Probably a pretty fair result for Melbourne tbh.

We need to get another 6-7 players in that top 50 before we start looking towards top 4 and 1-2 players in the top 10

As far as the top 50 is concerned, its not too difficult to project two years hence and realistically expect to see Davey, Frawley, Grimes, Scully, Trengove, Jurrah, maybe Petterd, .........and who knows, maybe Watts, Tapscott and others in the next couple after that. While I don't take much stock in Mike Sheahan's opinion, if we have those players demanding attention then it will indicate a level of team success.

HaHaHa! Missy Higgins the 30th Best Footballer in the AFL..Your opinions are so relevant Mike (as usual)

I reckon by the end of the year in Mike's best 50 of 2011 we might see big Col Sylvia high up in the ranks! I feel like he really is ready to rip the comp to shreds, or atleast be a consistantly damaging player

How many Dees players would you have in the top 150 this year?

How many Dees players would you have in the top 150 this year?

Only had a quick look at Mike's list so far...The Demon players he mentions in the 50 are a fair call, Jamar was very stiff.

Scully, Trengove & Jurrah would make the extra top 150.

Nobody else has stepped up yet.

And your selections would be??

Good to see some of the boys in the to 50

BUT

How can Jarrad Waite be 45?

And why is Jolly and Mumford above Jamar?

What an affront!

Mike Sheahan's 100 Greatest Guitar Solos list also was completely off the mark.

And his 10 Best Holiday Getaway Locations had some absolute howlers in it.

And who could forget his Top 25 Tips for Stress Relief? What a joke.

I think Buddy as number 1 is a bit much. As has been said it's a bit stiff that Jamar didn't make it when Jolly and Mumford did.

Good to see 2 more Dees in there as Davey was the only one last year.

Out of curiousity, who do people in here rate as #1?

I'd take Pendlebury

You forgot Grimey, he'd be a cert for a 150.

This is Mike's predicted top 50 headed into the season.

Presumably he thinks Jamar will drop off, while Jolly & Mumford will be better.

He may be called a fool and make some contentious decisions, but no one else releases a top 50 players list that gets paid this much attention.

Credit where it's due.

(which makes me wonder why the Age have never tried to jump on the bandwagon & release a rival list...)

I laughed when I first saw Burgoyne at 21...

But then if you read his article he's basically saying this is predictions time. And with that in mind, I reckon he's pretty well got it right... I don't agree with about a quarter of them... but that's actually a pretty good strike record, since we're taking about crystal ball gazing.

A good example here is that if you go on last year's form, Jamar should be nestled inbetween Sandilands and one of Mumford or Jolly. But given that this coming season is all about predicting, he's likely saying that he thinks while Jamar is a great tap ruckman, Jolly will be more settled (produce his form from the second half of the year, and the GF) and Mumford will go from strength to strength from here on in. Don't get me wrong, I reckon Jamar is in the box seat to get the second most hitouts again... but Jolly and Mummy get more of the ball and kick more goals, do more around the ground.

It's actually a pretty fair assessment really. He thinks Jamar outdid himself last year and will fall back a bit this year. Nothing wrong with that.

But gee wouldn't it be nice for a supposed fellow Melbourne supporter - one with a lot of media clout - to be optimistic about our players? Why not have Jolly dropping off? Why the All-Australian Jamar?

It's nit-picking, yes. But it seems to be another example of Sheehan being a bit of a Clayton's Demon supporter.

Like Sylvia he has yet to prove himself.. i am a hard marker, unlike Mike Sheahan!!!

I hope Frank Grimes makes it, but as yet no.

You seriously want journalists to write articles in biased towards the teams they support?

Grimes is ahead of Scully and Trengove...

This is a laughably pointless exercise, really.

If they are a Demons supporter ... yes.

Have a look at Essendon supporter Mark Robinson's puff piece on the Legend James Hird in today's Hun.

They all do it.

And again ... Jamar was AA for Chrissakes. In the AFL's best 22. What suddenly happened that his stocks have dropped so dramatically?

What an argument!

'That journo is biased! You know what that means?

Another journo should be just as biased for our cause!'

Yep, we live a vaccuum where each and every citizen has perfect objectivity and zero passion. Blah.

Again, I repeat just for you rpfc ... Mark 'The Mad Russian' Jamar was All-Australian in 2010. Best 22 as judged by a panel of 'experts'. What suddenly happened that his stocks have dropped so dramatically? And why would a Melbourne 'supporter' be the one to write him off?

Ahh forget about it ....

Knit picking = It is "Sheahan."

I hope this doesn't deter you from trading players with me in Ultimate Footy. Then again I haven't had much success in that area anyway...

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
