SUMMER SIZZLERS

Article from the Sunday HUN looks at all of the AFL teams as they go through the pre season - SUMMER SIZZLERS

MELBOURNE

NAB Cup: Round 1 v Adelaide (7.45pm); v Port Adelaide (8.50pm) at AAMI Stadium, on Friday, February 11.

AFL flag odds: $26

In rehab: James Frawley (chest, 3 months), Robbie Campbell (achilles, 2 weeks).

Tearing up the track: Tom Scully and Jack Trengove didn't need the rocket Richmond's Dustin Margin received about his body shape. The two Dees are in impeccable nick.

Career at the crossroads: Austin Wonaeamirri needs a big year after missing the past two because of injury. The death of his father, Matthew, and idol Maurice Rioli were tragic losses over summer.

NAB Cup smoky: There is a spot there for Addam Maric, 20, if he can deliver in the pre-season. The livewire second-round draft pick knows where the goals are.

Muscled up: Cale Morton is no longer the skinny-looking wingman after piling on 6kg over summer.

On most of us an extra 6kg's would really fatten us up. On Cale, he might not look very different!

Whilst Morton suppposed to have put on 6kls he needs at least another 10- no doubt. However it is at least a start.

A subtle sign for us that things are changing in regards to our profile as a club:

The Hun website on their link to the above-mentioned article, has a thumbnail picture of Scully.

At a time when they could select a Colligwood player, or a Hodge, Ablett, Selwood or Judd... they choose a demon.

Subtle, but it still made me smile.

Talk about lazy journalism and an easy way to fill a double spread with meaningless rubbish. It looked like the writer had had a quick scan across the official and unofficial websites and plucked a few obvious snippets. Typical Herald-Sun.

For those who have been at training over summer, is Cale actually looking that much bigger?

Also, that article is pretty average in some ways. I mean, what sort of idiot would say Tayte Pears is at the crossroads?

Your not that stupid, must have been a joke?

Another 10kg on top of his 6kg gain?

Yeah...I doubt Cale would ever be playing at 98kgs

So Morton has put on 6kgs? Great news. Hopefully he body (and mind) will be right so he can live up to the hype that surrounded him when he was drafted. Gary Lyon still gushes over him, so he has got the goods.

Hopefully the 6kgs doesn't slow him, i doubt it would.

Morton can already take genuine contested overhead grabs, we've seen about a dozen of them. If he bulks up he could easily play key position for mine, he is a lovely set shot also

Would be a very handy key position type at either end of the ground if he ever got that far, but only time will tell if he can.

My gut feel is he needs that ability for some key position work to go to the next level and become a true A grade player who influences matches. Expectations would be for he and Watts to present more this year for some contested marking. Too often our long kicks to the forward line have to be contested by Green, Dunn, Petterd, Jurrah so it would be good if someone with height and size could at least present and create a real crumb for a growing fleet of runners and those mentioned above.

They must have missed the eight games Wonaeamirri played last year.

I am still trying to picture Cale with an extra 6kg's. It's what he needs to really make a name for himself. 2011 Fire up Please!!!

I must have too.

I only saw 3- 4 games that showed he deserved his spot.

I agree I think he needs a big year as there are a lot of players looking for a spot in the 22

and his spot is far from a certainty.

What? When have you seen cale use his body to out position an opponent? Let alone jump into someone?

I've not seen any sign of Cale showing some if any aggression.

It woud be a Nice surprise if he put on 500 grams of ticker.

I agree 100% with that, but it's almost as farcical a comment by the paper as when they said John Meesen would miss the NAB Cup. At least that was factual in its own sick way.

Strength was his weakness lol. That sounds funny.

but seriously he so needed a big summer in the Gym. So its good news, Because he is a talent.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Collingwood

Narrm time isn’t a standard concept—it’s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.

  • AFLW REPORT: St. Kilda

The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking.  We filled our boots with percentage — now a whopping 520.7% — and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourne’s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
