Cornelius has potential but he's a long way off.

I don't rate him yet.

Clark was close to All-Australian in 2009 (or did he get it? Can't remember).

Nah he didnt get it I dont think. Sandilands of course. Think they only went with the 1 ruckman.

S. Thompson...

Solid, but unspectacular. I'm not overly impressed but he seems to get the job done.

Reminds me of Chopper Carrol for some reason.

Yeah, solid is all I need for a back pocket. Can play on talls and smalls. Like you said, gets the job done. And has a bit of [censored] about him, which is always good for a back pocket.

It was him or Firrito...

Pick 174 - Mitch Morton (Rich)

After not going early with the tigers I knew it would be slim pickings but I was happy with either going Connors or Grigg off half back or Morton for a spot in the forward line. Yes he's up and down like a yo-yo but I think he's got the talent and this year he found out what its about. It's make or break for him next year and I think he can cement himself as a talented half forward/midfield rotation player similar (not quite as good) as Colin Sylvia. He's only 23 so hardly a surprise it hasn't clicked yet.

HB: J. Kelly (Geel) L. McPharlin (Fre) J. Adcock (Bris)

FF: A. Monfries (Ess) L. Franklin (Haw) A. Schneider (StK)

R: M. Jamar (Melb) J.P. Kennedy (Syd) R. Griffen (WB)

A lot of good teams have been put together, but I'm very happy with mine. The spine is solid, with Grima and McPharlin very honest defenders, Henderson a nice lead up forward CHF with a big tank and plenty of improvement to come, Jamar a top 3 ruck and Franklin the X factor. The midfield is led by the experience of Thompson backed up by a big body in Kennedy providing support to the class of Griffen, Thomas and Hill. My small defenders are good defensively and highly skilled. I would have loved another nippy small forward to poor on the pressure but I'm happy with 4 guys who can rotate in the middle, apply forward pressure and mark and goal themselves. Every player can win the ball and use it and I think this team would work very well together, not just be a list of gun players. With McPharlin I believe being the oldest at having just turned 29 I think this team would lose nothing over the next 3 years. It's also ready to go with a lot of players just entering their peaks (the exception being Swallow but I think we can accept that a number 1 draft pick midfielder is ready to go from round 1, especially when given the cover of this midfield).

Round 18:

Pick 175

Garrick Ibbotson - Fremantle

B: B.Waters (WC) B.Lake (WB) J.Brennan (GC)

HB: A.Davey (Melb) B.Goddard (StK) D.Jackson (Rich)

C: S.Salopek (Port) M.Murphy (Carl) G.Ibbotson (Fre)

F: B.Green (Melb) B.Fevola (Bris) L.Thomas (Nth)

R: D.Jolly (Coll) J.Bartel (Geel) D.Hannebery (Syd)

* Preferred Ibbotson over a couple of other options as we needed an injection of pace on the wing and I think this player has significant upside.

* Like others, I'm very happy with the make-up and balance of my team and look forward to the judging panel's assessment.

An engrossing, fun and challenging exercise fellas. Thoroughly enjoyed it!

My forward line would rip your backs to shreds e!

I am sure we all think our team is the best. Its the nature of the beast.

I rate my backline, but the backlines are the weak point on most teams.

I actually think my forwards would have more of an advantage.

Surely Swallow on-ball and Kennedy on a HFF.

edit: Ah, David Swallow... that weakens your list a bit

Who don't you rate, Kennedy or David Swallow. David Swallow is arguably the most ready number 1 draft pick of the modern times, having played WAFL, VFL and being in an AFL system for a year. I'm super happy to have him and think he'll be awesome as a HFF/wingman which is where he would be in my team. Kennedy isn't anything special and I didn't rate him before this year but he improved as the year went on and ended up topping his teams disposals in both of Sydney's (closely fought) finals. He's a specialist inside mid but his career is tracking a bit like Jobe Watson and whilst he's a bit away from the elite inside mids (Hayes, Selwood, Bartel) I don't think he is much off Andrew Swallow, Mitchell even Watson.

As we don't get a bench you don't want too many of the same types so I'm probably happier with Kennedy and David than Kennedy and Andrew. That said a Swallow brothers combination would have been perfect but HT ruined it!

I do rate yours the best so far.

Other than mine.

Thanks E25. You don't dole out compliments wily nilly so I feel quite chuffed!

The cards seemed to fall my way on a couple of picks and I think by getting the bookends in early (Fev and Lake), as well as a couple of quality utilities (Goddard and Brennan), I had some flexibility later on in who I could pick up. They're all good sides though. Will be interesting to get some independent views.

See, I question your tall forwards.

Fev and Gumbleton are a weak lineup.

Your mid-size forwards are good, but you lack a really good small forward.

Its a bit out of balance.

Murphy should switch with Lewis.

Salopek as a winger is a weakness.

He should be a flanker at best imo.

STRONG backline.

Great drive out of defense, with some precision kicking go destroy zones.

FF line is weak, HF line marginally better.

On-ballers a bit weak too & mumford has to do everything.

I'm picking holes in it, but I'm looking for weaknesses.

    REDEEM by Meggs

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves. EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los
