Welcome to Demonland ... JEREMY HOWE

Absolute smokey if I've ever seen one, but to take him with our second pick we must've felt someone else was on his trail.

His highlights package makes him look like a taller Robbo, but better at ground level.

Also reportedly runs a 14+ beep test.

JEREMY HOWE

From the mfc website:

No.33 Jeremy HOWE

Hobart

Height: 192cm

Weight: 85kg

DOB: 29/06/90

Club: Dodges Ferry/Hobart Tigers (Tas)

Bio: An athletic full-forward who loves to take a screaming mark. Has a huge leap and acquired skills on both sides of his body. Reads the play well and has good running ability.

Terrific marking forward who mainly takes high marks with 1 grabs, yet can still mark on the lead as well.

Times his jump to perfection and can really launch himself, has an amazing leap. Can take the old fashioned screamers. 14.1 Beep and 102cms leap.

Very clean mark and very nice accurate kick for goal, can cover the journey.

Clean off his toes and handballs well, field kicking very nice and makes good decisions. Will chase and tackle as well. Has X factor could be the next Robbo.

This is an amazing draft pick really. I don't know anything about Howe specifically but I do know about the club he came from. Dodges Ferry plays in a second tier competition in Tassie, and given that the standard of the first tier competition in Tas is abysmal compared to the VFL, SANFL etc, Howe really has come straight from bush footy in to the AFL.

Given this obscurity, I wouldn't have thought the demand for him would be huge. I'd have (in my totally uneducated opinion) thought he'd still be around for our picks in the 50. Barry and team must have really rated him to take him with this pick (i.e. felt they couldn't risk losing him between 33 and 50).

This is the pick that will hold the most interest for me out of all of ours.

Not sure if the table will come out right but 102cm is up there with Brennan and NicNat!!

2002 102 Jared Brennan (Brisbane)

2008 102 Nic Naitanui (West Coast)

I agree Nasher.

It's either that, or he along with Davis and McDonald were the blokes BP rated the highest, from 30 onwards.

Hard to say.

To be honest, Howe, just from his highlights package, looks a better bet than Kieran Harper.

That's all he has also, not much consistency there.

And in regards to the running vertical leap, the highest recorded at the Draft Combine is 102cm, achieved by both Naitanui & Jared Brennan.

Howie is in good company (in terms of athleticism).

Edit: beaten to the punch!

This is one guy that really excites me, more so because no one had heard of him and I rate BP's work. So if we've plucked him at 33, and no one knew about him, well that gets me excited.

Keeps getting likened to Robbo, except as Greg Denham said this morning, he might lay a tackle or two. Ha ha.

And here we have BP's view, courtesy of the mfc website:

Selection No.33: Jeremy Howe (Dodges Ferry/Hobart)

"Jeremy jumped up and was a bit of smokey, I suppose. He was involved in the Devils program a couple of years ago and also the Mariners, but he came up the highway to play at his local club this year. He went forward in the last six weeks and he's pretty exciting. He can jump on some heads and take some hangers. You can never have too many of them in your forward line…it might be a good jump off between him and Liam Jurrah.

"He kicks goals; has clean hands and is a really good pick. We thought his talent package was quite outstanding and while he's been involved in some elite programs, he's been an apprentice electrician for the last three years. He's a 20-year-old, has a mature head on his shoulders and has played against men. There's no reason why he can't step up to the mark very quickly."

I heard he was training with the pies and hence why we got him at 33 (pies had 45 and 46 before our next one)

Maybe like Jurrah we stole another gem from the pies!!!

Sounds like a Derek Hine-type pick from nowhere.

He always has a few up his sleeve. I'd love to think we pinched one.

A taller more athletic ver of legendary Robbo, add in defensive game with distinct second efforts !! Are we that clever, had others not noticed him ?

Geez, going to be hard to know who to watch lol.

BP and the guys could have felt some heat elsewhere as E25 mentioned. Certainly a most interesting pick and a big watch.

Could be a good call. re: Harper.

I think I heard from the box last night that Day got to 102cm as well. Just out of interest.

Did I read somewhere that he sent his own tape into the MFC, along with other clubs, during the season?

Pretty sure I remember reading that.

You may have heard that right. I heard/read that last night.

I wonder if he featured on that legends segment on TFS during the year. Some of those grabs....wow.

My cousin played against him a couple of times. Spoke to my cousin last night.

I told him that I was surprised we took him at 33. My cousin said that he was surprised as well, but there was more than one other club looking at him. Said he had massive potential and playing in Tassie has probably held him back.

Will hit him up for some more info soon.

Yeah hes a good player. He does chase and his contested marking is a feature. Just knows when to jump and how to protect the ball when he is in the air

Tingles do yo know what his defensive game is like? Does he chase and apply pressure. His beep test would suggest he has the capacity to do so.

For those that know, what does this guy have over Danny Hughes?

Yeah his defensive game is very good, Playing for Hobart they dont tolerate people not chasing. If he didn't he would be in the twos. Playing in the AFL aswell will raise it further because he will thrive in this environment.

Over Danny Hughes im not sure I was a huge fan of Hughes but he never got going with injuries.

Thanks, that's good to know, he is an exciting prospect.

Going on his highlights he looks to be capable of some things at a very high standard. I love the way he attacks the ball in the air, reminds me of jumping Jack from the tigers.

I wonder what his consistancy is like and the if there is a big gap between his best and worst. These things are hard to tell from just highlights...but i like that he has such a good beep test so he should have the motor to stay involved.

If we can get him to do the right thing consistatly we might have a player here.

And your right, Hughes body did let him down :(

We've now stockpiled an enourmous amount of forward talent, and in every single shape and size.

We are developing an ultra dangerous combination of forwards who can take an overhead mark and be equally dangerous at ground level.

At 20 years old i'm hoping to see him in action next year

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the
