Gippy Dee 48 Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 ROYAL RETURNS TO MELBOURNE Brian is a very good Assistant Coach and personally I think he has been unlucky not to get a top job over the years. But as a development coach and as an assistant, he's very good. Pretty happy with this pick up. Plus he's a Gippslander, so whats not to like? Gippy
Sdemon53 15 Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 With all due respects to Brian Royal I am not so sure if this is a good move. According to the article he replaces Sean Wellman. Does he have the same knowledge as Wellman who is a up to date defensive coach? Why did he leave StKilda after just one season? Unfortunately this appointment maybe just to fill a gap for the 2011 season. To be blunt I am a bit worried about how our defense will go next season.

He has been an assistant coach for a long period of time. Much longer than that of 'not a Wellman.' I'm quite comfortable with the appointment. He offers much experience. Mfc has made prudent appointments of late, I see this as another. No MFCSS here.

I wouldn't worry too much about our back-line.
Nasher 33,651 Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 To be blunt I am a bit worried about how our defense will go next season. Why? Frawley, Garland, Grimes and co are not going to turn in to hacks overnight just with the appointment of a new coach.

Your problem is you question everything the club does and doubt every person we hire to fill a position. I would like you to say one thing positive about the club without the backhand complement you usually add.

Sdemon53 15 Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 And you know best? think I will leave it up to the club to make these decisions not wannabe experts who don't have all the facts...... Yes I do not have all the facts just like you. I am just giving my thoughts on the appointment of Brian Royal. You do not have to be extremely nasty about what I have said. Brian is a very nice person and I have no doubt he will do his best. But I am in fear that we will have a Brett Ratten situation again. Ratten had a big impact on the midfield at Melbourne, but when he left it went downhill. Really all I am asking is are we replacing an apple with another apple? My gut feeling is that we may have gone for the orange.
e25 5 Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 St Kilda, or rather Ross Lyon, is known for burning out assistant coaches. He works them hard and long hours. He's had a massive turnover in recent years. I think Royal brings experience from clubs who have been where we are now and that have gone on to take the step up to top 4. Very pleased with this appointment.
H_T 3,049 Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 My gut feeling is that we may have gone for the orange. Oohh. Something better perhaps.
e25 5 Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 You give Ratten far too much credit and ignore the other pertinent facts around the time of his departure.

No I don't have the facts that is why I leave it up to the club, this club so far has done everything right, if they feel he is the right person for the job that is good enough for me
Nasher 33,651 Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 I have to admit I was disappointed when I read the name, but I only had to scratch the surface with a bit of thought to realise my worry was based purely on the fact that he's not shiny and new. The only other fact is that he's an assistant coach with considerable experience - to have survived this long in the caper he must do something right. So what's to be disappointed or concerned about?
jayceebee31 768 Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 What does our young experienced team need: The main thing I feel is quality experienced coaching. With Viney & Royal-I think we have them. What else we need to do is get an experienced part time coach for defence and part time forward coach- and I will be delighted.Surprise choice but I think a very good one.
Sir Why You Little 37,450 Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 Brian Royal was good for us first time around, and after a few years at other clubs will no doubt bring some top line experience with him. If he is to work in our defensive area, i am sure he learnt a lot with Lyon at the aints. Welcome Back Choco B) , and for the younger Members of 'land, Choco was no slouch in the midfield at Footscray.

I think, I may like this possible Idea. If it's what it could be, my reading between lines, then I think it's good.
Bhima 0 Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 I think the first thing that came to mind was that Brian Royal has been around for a long time and might lack fresh ideas...however...anyone who has spent time at St Kilda in recent years would have been privvy to the one of the best defensive zone set ups in the game. Considering that Max Hudghton was sought after by Collingwood and has been tremendously successful, I think that Royal has come from the right club to help Melbourne move up the ladder. A second positive is that he is clearly not pursuing a senior coaching position, and unlike a Brett Ratten/Chris Scott/Dean Laidley type, he will not be looking to leave the club. Therefore, if he's any good, we should be able to hang on to him for a while. At least I'm taking these two positives from this appointment. Go Dees!

That's a very good point you've raised. I might not rate the importance of coaches as highly as most, but I do rate ones who can instill a good form of hive-mind type defensive zone.

Having blind faith like you have got us into trouble and we could have lost our club. We all should be vigilante as to how the club is run and the results we get on and off the field. I for one will always ask the question have we made the right decision. The appointment of Brian Royal may turn out to be a very good one. The performance of the team will provide the answer one way or the other. However the reaction of Frawley had when it was announced that Wellman had gone to Essendon worries me for season 2011.
Chook 15,068 Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 . . . the reaction of Frawley had when it was announced that Wellman had gone to Essendon worries me for season 2011. What reaction? What did he say/do?
old55 23,860 Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 ... worries me ... Good to see you happy then
Dee Fan 3,247 Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 Having blind faith is not what the Melbourne Football Club needs. And having no faith in the current board like you, is not what we need either. Just accept that the old board is gone and the new board have improved our club substantially since they were elected; there's no place for old grudges and if you are just going to continually criticise everything the club does, go and join Richmond it's welcome there but not here.
Guest Thomo Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 I have no idea what Brian Royal will bring to the club and if he is the right person for the job, that's why Melbourne pay other people with knowledge in this area to make these decisions.
