2010 Player Review - # 44 Rohan Bail

Featured Replies

That's the one I'm talking about. I think the worst miss of the year goes to Watts against freo. Imagine if that had been a final.

That kick was 45 out and he did kick it on his left due to pressure coming on his right. I'm pretty sure he is a natural right footer.

Edit - I'm talking about Bail.

Also it wasn't the case that he couldn't make the distance, he was undecided as to whether have a shot for goal or kick to Petterd.

my point was that he had Davey in space 5-10 m closer around a little bit back, Flash would have gobbled it up

Roost it: Correct. J.Watts worst miss of the season, may well have cost us a top8 berth, but at the very least it cost the young side a great win: against a decent side in a close one interstate

Raised one of my eyebrows this season, let's see if he can raise the other eyebrow in 2011.

Unsure on best 22 status, I'll reserve my judgment on him in 2011.

How is walking around with one eyebrow raised working out for you? Haha

I get a lot of looks, as you can imagine. :)

only qualm is when he centred it to Ricky P in the dying seconds of QB. Should have handballed to Davey or drilled it himself. That one still hurts.

Me and you both. Was in the stand with beer in hand right behind the ball's trajectory. A little bit of inexperience, but that will come. Like how he can kick both feet fluently and has an IQ for the game. Not sure how we got onto to Scully in this thread but he's a jet and kicking under the pump ala Lenny Hayes sometimes reduces one's efficiency.

I thought he did the right and disciplined thing by passing to Petterd. After all. Petterd was marking everything in sight that day and he was in a good position to mark. Had the kick been timed just a split-second earlier it would have been all over red rover.

A great pick up- however what position does he play in a permanent role?

Maybe a permanent interchange ?

Half back. Even wing.

Those who don't think he's in our best 22 just need a bit more convincing. Come Round 2 I'm sure you'll be on board.

I concur.

Was said to have elite disposal by foot when we drafted Rohan. Didn't show much first year for Casey, but certainly looked fine in the Red and Blue this year.

My Bail moment - Against Richmond where he grabbed the ball away from Martin did a blind turn and drilled a pass (to Watts I think, for a goal not quite sure).

Bail's already exceeded my expectations.

Major query for me is his disposal.

He's not best 22 for me though, but I do like him.

Tough question that. I see him as a midfielder-cum-forward definitely, but his pace and tenacity make him an ok fit for a rebounding small defender role.

If the old adage that once you're drafted, everyone's equal from rookie to #1 picks, then this kid has to be in our 22, or at least in our 23-25... which in the injury plagued world of the AFL is tantamount to saying he's in the side. In his favour is the fact he's a lovely fit for the modern game, in a variety of roles. If you take, for example, Jones... who is likely the better player at the moment, but is really confined to a single role in the team... and compare him to Bail who has a bit of speed, a good footy brain, can kick a goal, evade, run-with, and play comfortably in at least two areas of the ground... it makes you think the only way is up for the kid.

Maybe a permanent interchange ?

Best opportunity is back pocket as an improvement on Bartram within 12 to 18 months.

Otherwise I dont think he will be a regular in the 22 as a midfielder. Happy if he does though. 2010 was a big improvement on the efforts I saw at Casey in 2009.

You just kick those, you don't fark around you just slot them through

Would you say the same if he had have had a ping and kicked it out on the full, with 5 mins to go?

I think he made the correct decision, but fate conspired against us on this occasion.

I agree completely.

Very handy player to have on the fringe anyway.

Tries to have a shot on his right with pressure coming from that side, is smothered or sprays it because he is off balance. Then what is your reaction?

He doesn't, he kicks through the ball and we beat Collingwood. He probably had the same doubts creep in you have and we lost. James Brown says it best "Mind Power, It is what it is"

Five minutes before the end Bail was in an identical situation and he kicked a perfect pass to Dunne who goaled.

He stuck to the successful formula and unfortunately it was the only mark Pettard dropped all day.

Bail was an inspired draft pick I reckon

He did the team thing. Any other time in the game it would have been the right thing to do. If he ever finds himself in that situation again he will no doubt remember and take the shot, but for a player with less than 10 games to his name, it was a good sign that he did the team thing and we can perhaps forgive a lack of situational awareness regarding the clock.

I'll add that the big moment when I realised that we had a serious player on our hands was in the first game I got to this year. I can't remember who it was against, just that there was a long ball out of defence to the wing, the ball spilled to the back of the pack and Bail lurking behind scooping it up and taking off to a vacant 50 for the first score of the match. I remember standing up and yelling "look at Bail!" as he took off, and of course the let sown when he missed the shot. However, he made a habit of taking the spill off the back of packs and running us into attack this year and it's something we can never get enough of.

We wouldn't even need to be talking about this if Bate had the vision that Bail did only moments earlier and spotted Ricky twenty metres free instead of 'not [censored] around with it' and bombing it aimlessly towards goals.

Look I like him as a player and we're not talking about Bate. However I just want Melbourne players to kick those goals. Sure there's lots of reason's why what he did was the right thing but they'll never be as right as just kicking it through the big sticks.

Correct

Bate stuffed it

then Bail stuffed it in two different ways

then Petterd stuffed it

should have won that!

Then I stuffed the seat in front of me... Was a horrid minute of footy. I still look back at that game with a weird sense of not being (all things considered) too annoyed that we lost.

Why would you waste his speed and run in a lock-down role? I would have thought more a Davey-type role. I always figured he and Benny were fighting for the same spot.

  • AFLW REPORT: Port Adelaide

Well, that was a shock. The Demons 4-game unbeaten run came to a grinding halt in a tense, scrappy affair at the sunny, windy Alberton Oval, with the Power holding on for a 2-point win. The Dees had their chances—plenty of them—but couldn't convert when it mattered most. Port’s tackling pressure rattled the Dees, triggering a fumble frenzy and surprising lack of composure from seasoned players.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Port Adelaide

The undefeated Demons venture across the continent to the spiritual home of the Port Adelaide Football Club on Saturday afternoon for the inaugural match for premiership points between these long-historied clubs. Alberton Oval will however, be a ground familiar to our players following a practice match there last year. We lost both the game and Liv Purcell, who missed 7 home and away matches after suffering facial fractures in the dying moments of the game.

  • AFLW REPORT: Richmond

A glorious sunny afternoon with a typically strong Casey Fields breeze favouring the city end greeted this round four clash of the undefeated Narrm against the winless Tigers. Pre-match, the teams entered the ground through the Deearmy’s inclusive banner—"Narrm Football Weaving Communities Together and then Warumungu/Yawuru woman and Fox Boundary Rider, Megan Waters, gave the official acknowledgement of country. Any concerns that Collingwood’s strategy of last week to discombobulate the Dees would be replicated by Ryan Ferguson and his Tigers evaporated in the second quarter when Richmond failed to use the wind advantage and Narrm scored three unanswered goals.

  • CASEY: Frankston

The late-season run of Casey wins was broken in their first semifinal against Frankston in a heartbreaking end at Kinetic Stadium on Saturday night that in many respects reflected their entire season. When they were bad, they committed all of the football transgressions, including poor disposal, indiscipline, an inability to exert pressure, and some terrible decision-making, as exemplified by the period in the game when they conceded nine unanswered goals from early in the second quarter until halfway through the third term. You rarely win when you do this.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.
