Todd being back the club is one thing, but getting another step closer to attaining Jack in a couple of years is another. Great news and a very good get by the club - or two very good gets. :)

Really good day for the club.

Just as an aside - I noticed there was no mention of Mark Williams with O'Donnell in the Development team. Williams was made a dev coach two years ago.

I wonder if this appointment has meant a restructure with Williams going to take charge of the backline and, therefore, there will be no need for a coach to be sought for the position vacated by Wellman.

He's a good coach in his own right, Williams...

That's my guess. Could be wrong.

thats quite interesting.. I also thought this may prompt a little rejuggling. The old gem of time will tell I suppose applies.

williams was/is more than a handy tactician

couldnt care less about the crows...GO DEES !!! :)

Serves them bloody well right for trying to pull a sneaky on us. Plus there is no love for the crows from the MFC. We will not easily forget that practice match in Elizabeth earlier this year, where they went out to deliberately injure some of our key players. Stick the knife in Dees.

My understanding was that Williams had been long ago made midfield coach, with West as his part-time assistant (now full-time?)

Originally he was the development coach though.

Totally Brilliant news....People now truly want to return to the MFC, we are no longer thought of as the B option.

Well done Stynesy you must be perked up this week. One of your good mates is back home on the pay roll.

Let's not worry about jack so much yet, But how much Hard edged aggression and experience Todd Viney can pass on to our Young Midfielders and Team in general.

Todd enjoyed kicking a goal to, his greatest being the First goal of the 87 Elimination Final from the Members Flank. The first September goal for the MFC for 23 years.

Welcome back Todd-I knew it would happen.

I am going to crack a bottle of red after reading this B)

Would still love to acquire Chris Scott as defensive coach.

Now theres a bloody goody idea :)

We get the Red...Adelaide..the Blues !! its good to be Melbourne !!

West was part time in his first year, but full time last year.

I had only thought today about the back line position but then thought maybe such things might crop up after Sundays game and the team and party returns. Todays announcement see that things are indeed moving along at Melbourne.

I wonder who is phoning whom even as we write ? would think some news soon

Todd Viney said, “I’m really ecstatic to be returning to the Club at such an exciting time. Jim, the board, and everybody at the Club have done an amazing job in revitalising it over the last couple of years. I look forward to assisting the Club to move forward in its quest to deliver the Melbourne members, supporters and past players a thirteenth premiership, and to consistently challenge for AFL premierships over a sustained period of time”.

I love that he adds the past players in there. Just emphasises his passion for the club & his want to see an elusive flag is as great as anyone of us.

His coaching credentials are well recognised & he is just a freaking MFC LEGEND!! Welcome home Todd.

Spoke to the lad on facebook, said he was super excited to come home and the family were moving back in December. Obviously they've known for a while this deal was on the cards.

Fire up draft 2012 so pumped!

Stuff the Crows.

They had no problems taking Scott Thompson from us.

So we'll take their assistant coach from them.

Don't feel for them at all.

Great news for the Dees!

/ Just whilst we are on this. 2013 midfield line

C: Davey Scully Trengrove

R: Jamar Viney Sylvia

Given the depth for this position will be:

Morton, Moloney, Jones, Blease and any future midfield picks we have done unbelievably well assembling this list!

Yes, and it was my understanding that Williams went from being half/half to a full time Dev coach. It certainly intimates as much on the website with his blurb on the website. Although he is given the title 'Assistant Coach.'

I guess we will wait and see...

After the resignation of Wellman, this is HUGE news. Viney is up there with the highest regarded people in footy departments, and has been for a while. I remember the Hawks thought he was massive for them when he was there.

Now if we can just get a backline coach with some runs on the board we'll be sitting veeeery pretty.

I recall Williams holding the title of midfield line coach.

It's a bit unclear from the club's website, but reading into it...

Mark Williams - Assistant Coach

Having successfully coached Sandringham to three flags 2004, 2005 and 2006. Williams took on a new challenge and in 2008 was appointed as Development Coach at MELBOURNEfc. His involvement in the game encompasses a wide range of coaching roles, as well as playing experience with Sandringham, Footscray and Carlton. He was Assistant coach of the VFL state side from 2001 and 2004, before taking on the senior role. Williams was also senior coach of the Northern Bullants between 1998 and 2003.

Scott West - Midfield Coach

After joining the Demons in 2009 as assistant midfield coach in a part-time capacity, West will now join Mark Williams in 2010 as a fulltime coach, aiming to continue the growth of our young midfield, and specialising in the stoppage area of the game. In his nineteen years at the Western Bulldogs, West established himself as one of the great players of the competition over his 324-game career. He amassed an amazing seven Club Best and Fairest awards, and twice - 2000 and 2006 - was runner-up for the Brownlow. West was also named All Australian on five occasions.

The Williams blurb would suggest he is development coach, but that looks to be unchanged from when he first came on board.

West is listed as a midfield coach, but also as beginning as assistant to Williams in the midfield.

Further to that, Williams was one of the speakers at the Before the Bounce session and presented on the midfield and stoppages.

The good thing about this appointment also is that if we cannot find a top Backline Coach, i am sure Todd will be able to pass on many good pointers to our defensive players.

There were not many Tougher players going around than Todd. So yes lets find that defensive coach, but all is not lost if we don't for next year.

Good to see the club can now afford to expand the coaching ranks. Great to see Todd back. Does anyone know what his duties will be?

I agree that all is not lost if we don't get a Wellman replacement.

But that has little to do with Viney and more to do with the fact that we have 1 forward coach, 2 midfield coaches (if you read it like E25), and zero backline coaches.

Williams should be able to slot into defence if that's what they are thinking - or do not want to overspend on the FD.

absolutely, i was just pointing out to some of the younger guys here, who may not have seen much of Todd play that he was a very hard at it ball player who would know quite a bit about defending as well.

Hopefully this appointment will make it easier to find another coach.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
