Tanks for the Premiership

But to put it simply, it took the Pies five years to cash in to cash in on a big tank.

Using that as a measure, expect Dean Bailey to be a premiership coach in 2014.

I like that bit the most.

One might then think of Daisy as .. Thomas the Tank-engine of Collingwood !

Premiers in 2014?....We should subtract an extra year as we tanked for 2 years. So Dean Bailey will be a premiership coach in 2013.

pies also have a lot of cash and a lot of members.

melb have just become debt free and our membership is increasing...

melbourne are still along way from maturing as a club but the future is looking the brightest it has in awhile

I've been telling any Pies person (or others) that want to listen that MFC are far from being alone in tanking. Like High Tower states - it's list management.

Collingwood made 2 grand finals in a row and the following year, tanked the 2nd half of the year, put all their players in for surgery, got Thomas & Pendlebury in the first few picks.

Both could have been Norm Smith Medal winners and premiership players in the space of a week. (Thomas unlucky in the 1st game and also played a blinder of a 2nd half this time).

I'm sorry, but I refuse to admit that we tanked. We were never as bad as that Collingwood team, or as bad as Carlton in 2007. We should have ended 2009 4-7 if not for Jordie McMahon. We ended 3-8. And in 2008 we were just an absolutely terrible team. We would have failed at tanking.

I'm not doubting some people wanted us to lose, but, in comparison to other "tanking" teams, we've hardly tanked at all.

We ended 4-18 for the year in 2009. We lost a game to Richmond after the siren from Jordie McMahon, late in the season where Frawley played CHF and Warnock FF. We tanked. But hey Hawthorn did it, they won a flag. Collingwood did it, they won a flag. StKilda did it, they've lost in a drawn GF and by a Matthew Scarlett toe poke.

This isn't necessarily tanking. Do Footscray tank every game when they move Harris up forward? Experimentation is almost expected, especially in games that won't affect the premiership race at all.

Warnock looked good for a split second at FF. Wouldn't say he layed down. And moving an AA to CHF isn't exactly tanking either :P

i think i remember Brad Miller playing as a midfielder in that Richmond 2009 game. The SEN commentary with KB was hilarious that day. (Andy Maher walked out of the Box, considering what carlton did in 2007 that was Gold)-it really was! We tanked that day for sure and for very good reason. We gave ourselves at least 2 years headstart on the alternative.

List Management and Tanking are one and the same

Tanked for sure!! Hahah loved it too.. but tanking takes place in the coaches box. The players go out there to win. They don't go out, risk injury for a mock game of any sorts, it would go against their competive nature- for the good of the team or not.

We tanked for sure and I could kiss Bailey for it! Although luck did go our way... Mcmahon saved Baileys arse so to speak when he stole the game from us and put Trenners back in our hands. Epic. And fair and just I may say in the football universe for dees supporters alike!

And I remember Bailey cracking it and storming out of the box because he thought we were going to win.

Still hard to believe, that last kick of the game gave us Trengove.

Hahaha it was a reversal of fortunes in the Tigers box that day, most underwhelming celebration of a tough fought victory ever witnessed in the history of the Universe.

I will never forget that McMahon kick. Such a weird feeling whole heartedly cheering for another player and club. Overjoyed at a loss... it was a surreal feeling.. McMahon is a god!

Yeah, I've never felt that weird after a game of footy. Just sitting there praying Jordie's kick would go through.

The look on everyone's faces after it was funny too.

Every time i look at Trengove i thank god that Jordie kicked straight. He should be made an honourary life member of the MFC for such a gift!!!

(and even funnier is that he was the only listed Richmond player not to get a senior game this year!)

Here 'Tis... B) B)

The 2008/09 demons were dreadful. Did they tank? If anything, they tanked ONE game during this time against the tigers. And even then, they were not guaranteed to win that match.

The truth is those football teams were inept, and incapable of beating most teams on any given day. The 2008 demons were the worst football team I have seen in my days of following the AFL. They were not even competitive for most of the games.

If we do win the flag, the tanking argument will come out. But if we win a flag, I couldn't care less what we get accuses of, because we will be premiers!

Oh, Collingwood did tank- Congrats to them, because it led them to a premiership!

This is correct. There was no tanking. On the field. And that's the bottom line. The general population should recognise and acknowledge this. For the player's sake.

  • PREVIEW: St. Kilda

It seems like only yesterday that these two sides faced off against each other in the centre of the continent. It was when Melbourne was experiencing a rare period of success with five wins from its previous six matches including victories over both of last year’s grand finalists.  Well, it wasn’t yesterday but it was early last month and it remains etched clearly in the memory. The Saints were going through a slump and the predicted outcome of their encounter at TIO Traeger Park was a virtual no-brainer. A Melbourne victory and another step closer to a possible rise into finals contention. Something that was unthinkable after opening the season with five straight defeats.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.
