the fact he re-signed a month ago then bailed out doesn't sit well with me, despite all the other arguments

its unprofessional, full stop

but, thats now consigned to the byways of history. lets take the opportunity to get an even better BL coach with new fresh ideas

For the one's that go reguarly to training one would notice how good he is, however, after 3 years it was probably time to move on.To bring another experirnced defensive coach in to further progress these players is ideal timing IMO.Just hope we go for the best in assist further development.One less person going to China.

Got to see him working with the defensive group a few times at Casey, mainly in pre-seasons. Close enough to hear what he was saying. Pretty impressive, particularly with one on one stuff. Things like positioning yourself in relation to your opponent, how to turn a contest into an intercept, how to prevent your opponent getting goal side of you. Really interesting. I think he's done a great job with some good cattle.

That said, I also agree that you need to turn over your assistants to gain fresh perspectives. Defense these days is heavily slanted to zoning, defending space & transition. I'd think Milburn would have a lot to offer from that perspective.

While I can't wish Wellman good luck - he's going to Essendon FFS - I can understand why he's going & thank him for his contribution to our rebuild.

He should leave Melbourne very proud of what he's done here.

Maybe the next backline coach will sort out the kick ins .

Remember when Craig Cameron left and many people round these parts thought the world was going to end. Fast forward a few years and most of us I think are quite happy with the players recruited by Barry Prendergast. People come and go from a club. Yes it does grate that Wellman sought a release just 4 weeks after signing a 1 year extension and we now have to fnd a new assistant asap but I can understand why he is returning to help Hird lift the Bombers out of their current mediocrity. I do hope he enjoys the outdated facilities at Windy Hill and an end or 2 of lawn bowls not to mention coaching a backline where the only All Australian will turn 36 next season.

From a Melbourne perspective we are quite attractive to potential assistants. We have our act together on and off the field. Bailey is a good coach. We have great facilties and a talented and emerging list featuring some of the best and smartest young defensive talent in the AFL such as Frawley and Grimes and Garland. I am confident that world will not end and Bailey and Connolly will find a suitably talented replacement for Wellman.

Yes ...the upside is we'll probably land a better DC. As rightly pointed out we are no longer "that club" the one folk avoid. Imagine the club has already received a deal of interest.

Assistant Coaches change clubs quite often. Even retiring players go to a different club the following year and become involved with a "new" club. I'm not concerned with Wellman going to Essendon and reporting on our strengths, etc, etc. I'm sure Bailey has an idea of Port's, West of the Dog's, etc. Just because they know that stuff, doesn't mean 1. it will help (especially in Essendon's case!!!) and 2. The rest of the comp have access to this.

Will be interesting to see who we end up with, and will be more interesting to see who applies (although we probably wont get to know).
