Er . . . In a lot of card games, long suits are strong suits (ie they are one and the same).

Funny, I've always referred to them as strong suits during poker. Never heard long suits. I'll be sure to use it next time. I'll take your word for it.

(I don't play much, that's probably why..)

Essendon do love their favourite sons....

Still heres hoping to more years languishing in the doldrums. Sorry Ash.. lol

Like Sheedy??

It will be 30 years of coaching by ex Richmond players. The last favourite son was Barry Davis.

What about James Hird as assistant and ND as coach...with a view for hirdy to take over...?

like buckley/malthouse...

Disaster. ND would be walking around feeling a knife never too far from his back. I think the Micky/ Bucks situation is different.

Anyway Hird counted himself out of the race on Fox earlier this week and was grilled about his intentions.

I dont think so.

I reckon he'd want to coach. He would have learned a lot at WC and he would go to a well resourced club.

He probably missed the gig at Essendon because he said it as it was - that they were miles away from genuine contenders. Knights got the job because he told them what they wanted to hear.

I doubt there will be a better resourced club than WCE.

Any chance he missed the job at Essendon because there was a feeling from the observations of his time at MFC that he had missed the boat on where footy was heading?

I think he has a use by date like a number of coaches get. And its been and gone.

He's a leader of men and he would have learned a lot at WC. I think he'd be better than many think, but recycling coaches like Daniher is not popular. Melbourne, North and Richmond have most recently done very well with "youth" coaches and I expect Essendon to follow this path. But they need to get it right this time.

I don't agree - I think they'll go all out for an experienced coach.

Who?

Bomber Thompson - it's not impossible.

Roos but there's probably no chance even though they could pay him $1M+

Choco?

Has Mark Harvey re-signed at Freo?

Wonder if the Dogs and Eade will split?

Daniher?

Laidley?

Malthouse and Matthews are just too far fetched.

Neale Daniher will give them a real roller-coaster ride and get them damn close, but at the end of the day he wasn't a visionary and chose to use the same players year in, year out, without developing the youngsters.

I'm sick of hearing that crud about ND.

He had his faults but he was battling an inept administration (12 CEO's in 10 years!) poor marketing, poor facilities etc. What he did was nothing short of stunning. We could not afford to 'bottom out', rebuild etc. He realised we wouldn't win a flag with Robbo at CHF and Bizzell at CHB both circa 6ft 2in triers. Our recruiting key position players struck some poor luck with Smith, Molan etc.

With limited armoury he did a terrific job spruiking the Dees. Yep, he played White and Yze when they didn't deserve games but aside from that it's about time he was recognised for his great achievements.

Agree ND did a fabulous job with what he had & was Given by the MFC. I hope the Reverend is always welcomed back at Melbourne. B)

HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Demonland Trackwatchers were out in force as the Demons returned to Gosch's Paddock for preseason training on Wednesday morning. GHOSTWRITER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Kozzie a no show. Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. There’s a drill where Selwyn literally lies on top of Tracc, a trainer dribbles the ball towards them and Tracc has to g

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
