I am 61 years young and have followed the demons ever since I can remember, I may be biased but I have never seen any one at any club like

Jim Stynes!

He is amazing how the guy can keep getting up off the carpet all the times amazes me.

I am not fush with cash but how can you not put your hand in your pocket after seeing him last night.

What matters is that our supporters think we are a great club, and continue to support us.

I've never seen us be a really successful club but it hasn't prevented me from going every week and financially supporting the club every year. I couldn't continue to do that if I didn't believe our club was great.

To some that may be dellusional, but I'd rather live my life enjoying what I have than complaining about what I don't and being sour and angry, which is why Jim is a great representation of our club. He continues to fight the good fight even when things are against him. As supporters, I hope we all do the same.

It's not about being "sour", although the glad-handlers may assume otherwise. It's about being realistic. You know, the old fashioned 'call it as it is', or 'plain speak'.

This club ultimately has to be judged on premierships. We're not a great club, in fact, we've been pitiful.

The wheel is turning, but any future success can only be judged by flags.

And I wasn't necessarily trying to infer that you were a sour bastard.

But I think an element of hope and delusion is essential when supporting any sports team.

Otherwise supporters would just switch teams each year based on who they think will succeed that season.

(ignoring the concept of loyalty).

I think there's a balance to be found, because I feel like I live in endless hope and optimism that our club will be as dominant as Geelong has been recently.

At the same time I understand how much luck is needed for that and I think I assess our performances and development in a pragmatic way.

As was discussed in another thread, a lot can be attributed to the simple concept of cause and effect.

I'm also well aware that I often, without realising it at the time, make apologies for players where it is isn't warranted.

Such is the life of a happily delusional supporter.

Hmmm. Great, yes. But also small. A minnow in comparison to other clubs. I think we're great in the world I occupy because we've been around a while and have a rich history, and can foster talent and great young men who go on to be great older men like Jimmy. But the greatness or non-greatness has nothing to do with supporting them. To say you couldn't continue financially supporting the club if you didn't believe they were "great" is of a bit of concern to me. I hope it doesn't represent the vast majority of supporters who are forking over their hard earned to keep us afloat. I support us because I would like to see us return to greatness, and I'd be proud to be a small part of that... not because we ARE great. I have a sneaking suspicion that's what you meant anyway...

We've won 12 VFL cups. No AFL cups. (I don't mean to diminish the effort, as we enjoyed a period of dominance unrivalled by ANY club in the history of the game... Besides maybe Port in the SANFL.)

What's "real" about what Hannabal said is that if you ask any real footy head, or football figure from OUTSIDE MFC, they would say our achievements over the past 40 years haven't been "great" at all. Next to Richmond of the past 30 years, they've been the worst of any club pretty much. Even the Pies who only won one have built themselves into a dominant and rich club. Freo are too young. Bulldogs won one in that time. Saints are a financially sound club and are teetering on a second flag opportunity.

No reason to shoot the messenger. He may be looking at the glass half empty but the simple fact is, he's right. We WERE great. We could be great again. But we're not right now.

Ease up, Jungle Jim. When someone makes outlandish statements about this under performing football club, i.e. "best sporting club in the world", then it's in my nature to provide a few checks and balances.

I agree that's it's not the right thread though, otherwise I'd talk about the possibility of the "greatest club in the world" having a distinct possibility of winning its third straight wooden spoon.
