Not just that, how can they AFL look at paying some of his wage as part of a marketing fund, the same as Gold Coast & GWS? That really bafles me why do we need a promotional player in VIC and why do Essendon get the concesions???

If my memory serves me correctly, to have to enter the AFL system outside of the AFL draft, that player must not have played any football (AFL) for a registered club at any level for two years. Whether that be VFL or div 6 QAFL.

Many clubs have signed players outside of the Draft or it may be that they have first preference to them, I cant quite remember.

Sydney signed Jake Orreal from QLD because he was an awesome athlete but never had played football.

Similar to international signings...

Let me know if I am way off.

That sounds about right in terms of getting him outside the draft.

But part of his salary coming from the AFL marketing fund is the confusing part for me. Would this option be available to all clubs?

I would be very suprised if this was the case. I am not sure where that suggesting has come from. Is there a quote from anyone regarding this?

If that is the case, can Melbourne get $200,000 + for every year Jimmy was playing for us and subsequently 'promoting' the game in Ireland.

the thing for mine is Essendon have obviously spoken to him already, but he doesn't have to go there... he can go anywhere, obviously the hype is around them, but if other clubs believe that Inglis is willing to make the switch, then Essendon won't be the only side talking to him...

i personally don't think he will leave the NRL. I think the NRL will help the storm do whatever they have to, to keep one the stars in the comp.

Just my thoughts though

The whole exercise is about the AFL increasing its marketshare within rugby territory

It has very little to do with the player having any previous Aussie Rules experience

Obviously the icing on the cake is if one of these NRL stars can become a good player within our football code

It then becomes a good investment for both club and the AFL

Be prepared to be surprised.

It was reported about a week ago.

The AFL has pledged to support Essendon's bid to poach rugby league star Greg Inglis with a promotional arrangement similar to those of code-hoppers Israel Folau and Karmichael Hunt.

Buoyed by the defection of Hunt and Folau, AFL market development manager David Matthews said the league would do all it could to financially entice Inglis to make the leap.

"I don't know Greg and I don't know how well Essendon know him, but he's certainly an enormous indigenous name across New South Wales and Queensland," Matthews told SEN radio.

"If there was capacity for him to do more work in the indigenous field across those two states while he was playing south, it might be something that's attractive.

"If Essendon wanted to chat to us about a potential role for any of their players in helping promote the game, we'd look at it beyond what the normal contracts are."

I truthfully can see the merit in the AFL wanting to help Essendon financially entice Inglis across.

If you put that it is the bombers wanting him aside and if it was reported that Melbourne were wanting to entice him across, and that the AFL wanting to maximize his code switch by using him as an indigenous ambassador in NSW and QLD we would want to know if the AFL were wanting to top up his salary to ensure this.

The securing of Inglis to the AFL would be a greater coup than both Hunt and Folau.

My main question is not why is the AFL going to help Essendon nor why is Essendon able to get him outside of the draft but rather...

Why isn't it Melbourne trying to secure his services

Marketability wise he is 100x better than a Nic Nat or Hunt or Folau because he already plays in melbourne and is very very well known throughout the eastern side of Australia... If not the entire country..

    With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals.     The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm.
