Good pokies deal for the Dee's

Great news!

The board allocated $4 million to buy the licences on the pokies at the Leighoak club. We paid $370k, gotta be happy with that! Should help us clear the debt we still have.

Gotta feel the dodgy actions of the blues though. That act really is low and should be investigated. There must be some law against collusion like that.

CHA-CHING!

Pension week = Debt Demolition!

estimated to see machines in Victoria profit to the tune of $470,500 each over the 10-year agreement

92 X $470,500 = $43 286 000

Jeepers!!!

Great stuff. The tide is really starting to turn for our great club.

I would much rather they all just get banned and thrown out. (Or blown up if you prefer)

These things ruin lives, and i don't get any joy out of us making money from them. They are a blight on our local pubs, turning these social places that should be a joy to visit and into a dazzzling display of lights, noises and depression. I'm not against gambling, but this form of it is truly disgusting.

But we're stuck with them because if we didn't have them we wouldn't be competative against the other clubs.

I agree with JACKATTACK. The are the machines of the devil, pokies. But...if someone has to profit from them, and it can't be me it might as well be the MFC.

I feel bad for the Tigers and Bulldogs though. That stinks of insider trading and I hope it is investigated. Once again the Blues are happy to use underhanded tactics to improve their own at the demise of others.

True. I have never set foot inside crown because of a personal boycott. You can't turn back time but they should never have been legalised in Vic

4.3 Mil a year certainly won't go astray.

It's nice to take the moral high ground but the fact remains that pokies machines are not going anywhere and if we can make some money from them then perhaps some good things might come of them.

We are too poor to be worried about fixing the world's gambling problems. It is not our responsibility to be perfectly honest.

Oh and yes, Carlton just continue to shine as an example of a filthy, rotten organisation that deserves nothing but misery. Bastards!

This seems like a bloody good money maker.

Why did we only buy 92... why not 192.

The return on each machine appears to be amazing

Disappointed that Mathieson owning Leighoak as well. He could very well pull the pin on us & pass it to Carlton.

"Melbourne's board allocated $4 million for 92 machines at the Mathieson-owned Leighoak club, but ended up paying just $370,000"

Then it might just be time for a good 'ol fashioned lynch mob.

Disappointing pokies still exist.

MFC is quite torn on this pretty significant moral issue. They made peace with the concept by deciding that they can channel the proceeds from the pokies back into our community programs.

That's the thing.

Although they are reprehensible, if we don't own them someone else Carlton will.

It's too much of a cash cow to ignore. They'd be derelict in their duty to ignore something that could so significantly prop up our finances.

$4.3mil a year from a $370K outlay.

Incredible money.

That's interesting, because I've been wondering what happened to the values Schwab's talked aboutwhen emphasising the importance of being a good corporate/community citizen.

Schwab spoke about only entering into deals with those who shared our values, and as an example, he questioned whether partnering with junk food companies when there's a problem with obesity.

Since then, we've had the betting deal and now bought almost 100 pokies. It doesn't seem very consistent with the approach Schwab had previously outlined.

Anyway, if that article is correct we're talking about stunning amounts of money. Assuming the estimates are correct, we have just made the biggest financial investment in our history.

Pokies are wrong, wrong, wrong.

No wonder Carlton is so heavily involved.

Great investment for the club

Go Dees

Hear, Hear!

I am a good conservative voter, don't mind a punt, but I am disgusted in this sort of gambling and appalled with both sides of politics for letting this life destroying, pub and social killing thing to continue. Pokies are a black mark on society with those who can least afford falling into its trap.

Saying that if its going to happen I would prefer the money in MFCs pockets over any other organisation.

I've wondered that too, but you can't help ignoring survival in a dog eat dog world in pursuit of the ultimate prize... a Premiership. That's what I'm talking about !

Pokies are machines that are insidiously used by Governments to raise money

Even though they can destroy families and change people’s lives, (not necessarily for the better)

However in saying that they are a way for the government to disguise the fact that they are grabbing additional taxes based on a user pay basis

However imagine if a Government came out and said we are going to ban Pokies and instead we are going to create a footpath tax at the same rate as for the pokies and everyone who uses those footpaths pays the tax.

Can you imagine the hue and cry, riots in the streets protests and of course the Government would fall.

However dress that tax up with shinny lights, bells and whistles and guess what a great number of people accept it.

Of course that’s Human Nature, even puppy dogs at play show better restraint than some.

As for me, I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t played the pokies I believe I have earned APPROX $3000.00 from the pokies including a major $1000.00 JACKPOT at Geelong Cats (Felt good to take the money of them). But at the same time I would have probably reinvested the same amount,at other venues including our own.

The machines are structured so you can’t consistently win. The best you can hope for is to get away with at least some of your dignity intact.

"The trick is if you want to play no when to walk away."

  • PREVIEW: West Coast

Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

  • NON-MFC: Round 08

Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

The Demons hit the road in Round 8, heading to Perth to face the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium. With momentum building, the Dees will be aiming for a third straight victory to keep their season revival on course. Who comes in and who goes out?

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
