Stef Martin

For some reason i dont quite think Stef Martin is or will ever be at the level to play AFL footy.

It seems like he just doesnt want to be there, which is fair enough with a VCE enter score of 99.85 or something like that he should be a doctor!

If u watch him close it looks like he is uninterested and doesnt put 100% in. Really seems like he isnt enjoying the job that all of us would pay for.

I thought he showed real promise last year but has moved like a draught horse this year

I think you being a bit harsh, he hasn't been playing for long at all don't forget and (a bit like Dunn) he isn't getting the chance to settle into 1 position, instead he's being rotated around from forward line, to ruck, to back.

I think he's very valuable to the club because he does have the ability to play in all those positions, but it would make it difficult for him to settle. He's probably best suited at CHB, but with all the options we have down there he wont get to play there to much I'd think. Lets not forget Malcolm Blights comments about Martin in the Melbourne-v-Collingwood match, rd 2 2009. "You can build a team around this kid!"

I'm a big fan and hope he can force his way back into the team shortly as our 2# ruckman with the ability to play forward.

I saw some promise in him against Brisbane.

I think if he gets more experience playing forward for the Scorps he can still develop.

He really has developed in the wrong team, as I think Warnock and Frawley have taken his best position as a key back.

Thing is his biggest deficiency is his kicking and you can’t survive in this game being a poor kick. He appears to be v good 1 on 1 in contested marking situations, which is actually needed less and less these days. This is something we have few of, however.

An article on Frawley today quoted Wellman as saying Frawley had the athletic ability but also the ‘competitive’ element. He can be a terrior and hard on himself when he makes mistakes.

I don’t see this in Martin. He seems soft, and lacking confidence at times when moving into heavy traffic. Also he is a sprinter so is best served on short sharp leads rather than floating around the ground. Sprinting is his strength.

I also am beginning to feel he won’t make it. The closest player I could think of would be O’Halpin but he is better because of that mongrel factor in him.

Nearly everyone makes the mistake your making, just as they did with Jamar, & Garland & to a lesser extent chip Frawley, etc.

He hasn't been playing for long, so he is doing a brilliant job. Not to mention he is trying to learn the Key forward role. He'll take a little while just as big guys do, but that is natural. No amount of wishfull thinking & snapping of fingers will speed up the time it takes him to learn the role. But he will, & he is very quick.

What was Jamar doing at Stef's age?

Stef has come from a very limited footy background and has shown enough promise to warrant persistance.

MFC tragic's.....

They are everywhere around here.

Does he really have the ability to play in all those positions? Or is it the potential?

He looks like a fish out of water in the forward line. His ruck work is average. The backline is where he has looked

most comfortable.

Malcom Blight's comments? Malcom Blight? Sweet Jesus.

He is a liability in our 22 when he is played. The guy has miles of work left to do before he can even be considered a good footballer.

Don't get me wrong, I agree he's yet to reach his full potential, but the ability is definatly there, it's just a matter of him reaching his full ability.

I agree, the back line is certainly where he is most comfortable and I believe he is already very capable down there, he'd be holding CHB down if it weren't for our depth back there, I believe he'd walk into at least half a dozen other AFL teams in that position in their starting 18 (Richmond, Hawthorn, North Melbourne, Adelaide, Port Adelaide & West Coast).

Ruck is where he has the most work to do I agree but if you re-watch the Melbourne-v-Brisbane match he does quite a few good things in there, our 2nd goal of the game to Sylvia was set up by his ruck work.

And in the forward line while he is yet to kick a bag or look fully at home, he does show some signs. He's quite good at holding the ball in there in contested situations and he can take a good mark and he creates a contest which is one of our flaws in the forward 50 at the moment.

Spending some time at Casey playing as the 2 ruckman and resting in a forward pocket is probably the best place for him to learn this role, and I for one think he has the talent to learn it. He has more upside then PJ, Meesen and even Spencer IMO.

He was better in the backline where the ball came to him.

Therefor he could use his athleticism to beat he's opponent, also his very quick.

Still has a lot to learn, fortunately time is on his side.

Sadly, I agree with everything you said.

Great post and very accurate in my opinion. May take a reasonable length of time for him to make the neccessary progress- just remember Warnock in his initial 3 to 4 years.I also think he is most suited minding the tall on the opposition forward line.

Miller is part of the leadership group... And he starts for Casey!

That's right. He is a backman and only a backman and can play.

If he gets delisted by the dee's he will surely be picked up by another club.

I've said this before, but look at O'Hailpin over at Carlton. They've had him something like 6 years and he's just beginning to get the hang of the game. He still can't kick to any reasonable standard, but his size. athleticism and marking are giving them good value. If anything, he was closer to being an AFL player when they picked him up than Stef, because he'd been playing Gaelic football. We have a guy who has great size and athleticism, as well as a huge leap, who was playing Basketball up until he'd finished high school. If we keep working on him as long as Carlton have with O'Hailpin, we'll have a great player on our hands. If you have a problem with this notion, get back to me in another three years or so.

Agree with your comment and remember the game well. The only time Martin has been servicable has been as the number 3 key defender. I think he's a natural defender and he's surplus to requirements down there at the moment...hense I think he has no place in the side at the moment.

Paul Johnson has way more to offer at the moment, and that's why he's been selected 2nite.
